Title: Check out what I just won
Post by: Kresten on August 23, 2010, 02:14:11 PM

I took a bit of a gamble with it, not so sure about the quality of painting, but the modelling looks good but either way I'd say it was a good buy.

If anyone has seen it before or has any other pics of it I'd be most appreciative

superb. yet another emphasis of the true size of tanks in the 41st millennium, unlike the shrunken 40k models.

i am very excited to see it :)

im just hoping the extra grainy photos of it werent because its really badly made! but either itl be awesome and fine as is or itll be a great base for one. From the pictures it doesnt look like its got tracks... but hey for half the price and double the size I cant complain!

Pics will be up as soon as I get it

I think it might have tracks, it looks like they may have used an actual continuous chain or something and the top of the tracks just covered for protection. I wonder if it  has an openable component, that would be just brilliant! If you end up modding it I would definitely be keen to see you do that :D

Hmm. If the dimensions in the auction are right, it's actually a bit oversize compared to the Imperial Armour measurements.

In general, my temptation would be to err on the side of undersized with Inquisitor vehicles - the game scale means they're naturally going to be quite large, and it's a greater problem when a model is too big to practically use in games than if it's a bit underscale.

Thats so cool.
I started working on plans for a Rhino in 2004 but I never really got very far with it (I've got a 54mm scale drawing of the basic elevations somewhere). I can't wait to hear more about it.

If its not a stupid question, what do you intend to do with it? I've got a 1:35 scale Challenger that I've used as set dressing in the past and on occasion as a GM controlled Vehicle (in which case the way it works is governed more by spirit than rules).

run around my room going 'broom broom rattattatta kerpluarrrrrgh booom rattattatta smite the heretics! boom bang smash arggghhhh'

... but seriously, while I probably will actually do a bit of the above, I suppose if I actually get around to playing the game I'll probably use it as an objective or gm controlled piece, or as a dynamic saving private ryan type 'oh sh!t theres a tank, run/do something creative to take it out!' but to be honest whatever the hell I want! I have a 54mm chimera on the way!!! muahahaha

Edit: my grammar has taken a nose dive recently...

So the bad boy arrived... and let me say im very happy with it. It looks like whoever made it did a good job, and then got a bit fed up of it and rushed a few bits. But im not fussed, it's a great basis and Im thinking i might just paint it black and have it as an Inquisition vehicle? Suggestions welcome. Also as for scale, its huge and looks like it actually could fit six or so marines in there.

The tracks are from some sort of toy, but still work well.

The sides are missing a couple of the bolts, and im getting rid of that gs skull and banner, in favour of an Inq symbol.

he started a welding effect on the joins which is cool, but didnt continue it throughout, I think I will. Any suggestions how would be appreciated. Also the guns on the balls are missing, dont know if they might be in the box somewhere, but i doubt it, so theyll need replacing.

The back is well done, but those piston things dont look complete, theyll need some work too.

But overrall, awesome. Really good effort from whoever made it, very pleased with it on the whole.

Now let the ideas commence! Let the conclave decide how this phoenix shall be reborn!

Paint it Black, you know you want to!
It looks awesome and could be so much more so with just a little bit of work. I wouldn't bother putting Lasguns on the Back, I don't think they'd look very good on a model that size.

Whats it made of?

Laudhailers. For shouting at heretics. "You! Drop your weapons or be fired upon! ... what? whats that? Its drop your weapons and be fired upon? Oh... Uhmmm... Oh well. Open fire!"

Three heavy bolters will make a mess of anything.

I now have a anti-power gamer device... oh you have a warband of Grey Knights plus a librarian... against my inquisitor? Ok thats fine.... Say hello to my lil friend.

Seriously though *if i ever get to play a game..* it will be mostly used as a plot device or somesuch, not an actual controllable tank, or for a group to team up against and try to take down creatively.

I'll definitely put some more Inquisitorial weapons and bits and bobs on it, including a few minor touches like some exhausts and maybe a load of medieval style flame-torches.

Its done in plasticard as far as i can tell. Although I think he's used an old toy for the bottom. I was thinking of putting some suppression type weapons on the balls, to drop smoke or CS or something similar, I'll definitely add some laudhailers (loud speakers i presume?) and Im considering removing either the front bolter or the turret bolters and replacing them with maybe flamers or something. I do like the idea of it having a psy cannon on there too, which would definitely make it more Inquisitorial.

7.5" WIDE
5.5" HIGH, its a very realistic size I think, definitely looks about right.

made of plasticard with an old toy as a basic chassis (I think). And, Kresten's a Rogue Trader remember :P

I'm tempted to start a new warband so that the tank can actually be owned and given some history... but I refuse to think about it until other projects are finished first.

I like it.  A water cannon is somehow non-imperial.  There could be some mileage in the idea of being stuck on a planet with a relatively liberal crowd control policy and having to work with what you can requisition locally.  ("It's armed with what!!?  Well, add some salt then, at least it'll sting)

A web cannon would be cool... makes sense too.

Thing is, while Arx could have it, and as a monodominant who is basically just a hitman for an Inquisitor Lord it would make sense... but Im thinking of a Sicarius warband... and want to make them dressed in black, all pale and shadowy etc, but I just cant see why a sicarius Inquisitor would have a tank... but I can picture him with it and somehow seems right... hmmm need input i think

I dont want to pigeon hole it, like have weapons or anything that only make it suitable for one place or situation.

I havent done much to it, Ive taken those banners and skulls off and cleaned it off a lot, it was very dusty, put on some exhausts from a sentinel which look good, bit lost though, vehicles really arent my thing, Ive only ever owned a leman russ and i never put it together, just used it for bits... every time i pick it up i draw a bit of a blank!

Making me rethink my plans for an Arvus as maybe a bit too ambitious...

EDIT: I know this is only kind of relevant, but i need to get it out! I HATE people who bid on things 7 days or so before the auction ends, so if any of you are responsible for the bids on the space marine helmet thats on there now, shame on you! Better to know what sort of competition you're up against early, than have someone snipe it from under your nose at the last moment, IMO.  ;D

Nice piece of kit you got anyway.  Whatever you add to it, I'm looking forward to seeing the results.

Your not really driving the price up by bidding early, I've always played it strait and just put in the maximum I'm willing to pay when I find something I want and left it. I personally think Ebay would be better if the current highest bid wasn't revealed and it was just a sealled bid auction where the highest bidder paid what they Bid in Secret.

I get really annoyed by the opposite, you see something that been up for ages with no bids but it shoots up on the last hour from people who've seen it ages ago and waited right to the last minute to bid (Or got a machine to do it for them.)
Title: Re: Check out what I just won
Post by: Jamas Orian on August 31, 2010, 12:46:50 AM
The number one reason not to bid early is that you're not vulnerable to shill bidding (that is, the owner artificially bumps up the price).

It's an impressive piece, but I do think it's rather too big in its dimensions.  It should measure about 55mm to the top of the tracks.

Still, it'll be a lovely addition to any INQ battlefield.  As Kaled has proved with his INQ flyers, they can be excellent either as pure terrain, as objectives or as active models in their own right.  The duel between his Valkyrie and my desperado manning a lascannon battery was legendary!

I disagree, if it was only 55mm then the main body wouldnt be as tall and as it is now its barely as tall as a mini standing up, Ill do some comparison shots when im a bit further along with it, I think you'd agree if you saw it.

If you look at the 28mm tanks with the minis half out of the turret hatch they really look too small to me, so I think this is more of a realistic size. It is meant to be able to carry around six (ten?) fully armored marines isnt it? So in that respect I see it as being a 'true-scale' tank. :)

Anyway the decision has been made, it's had all the boltguns removed, a psy-cannon added above the turret guns, I'm trying to build a big web cannon for the turret and the rotatable guns at the back will be to drop smoke.

The idea behind this, taken straight from Shannow (cheers buddy), is that it's the only safe way to transport a berserker assassin, code-named Gehenna, who has an inconvenient habit of shirking off any sedatives administered. So the weaponry is designed to control this maniac rather than engage the enemy. It's the property of a WIP Ordo Sicarius, Isstvanian Inquisitor code-named The Lictor.

I really like this idea :)

It is too big - by my reckoning it should be about 9" long and about 4.5" tall, but if it's built on top of a toy, then I'm guessing the dimensions of the toy influenced the size of the finished model.

Quote from: Kresten on August 31, 2010, 06:21:45 PMI disagree, if it was only 55mm then the main body wouldnt be as tall.
No, because while it has to have ground clearance, the main body is off-set upwards.

Also, who said someone could necessarily stand up straight in it? It's not a necessity that people can stand up completely straight inside a vehicle (refer to almost any car ever made), and to do so increases the tank's size (and thus the likelihood of it being spotted or hit), and the weight.

QuoteIt is meant to be able to carry around six (ten?) fully armored marines isnt it?
That's the Rhino (and its variant, the Razorback). The Chimera is an Imperial Guard transport, not used by the Astartes.

You may be familiar with the FV432 (They made the "Real life Rhino" out of one for the DOWII promotional material). Here's a scale picture (http://www.inetres.com/gp/military/cv/inf/FV432/FV432.gif). Holds ten passengers - clearly hasn't the room for anyone to stand up inside. Admittedly, the Chimera is supposed to carry 12 men (unless the 5th Ed Guard Codex revised that), but it doesn't need to be much larger to do so.

So, it's perfectly fair to argue that a Chimera should really be of more conservative size than this (although that doesn't really detract from the model's appeal). And like I said, there are reasons to build Inquisitor vehicles a wee bit small - it makes them more usable.
Title: Re: Check out what I just won
Post by: Kresten on August 31, 2010, 07:34:46 PM
well that's me told then.

I seem to have misplaced my shrinking ray so I guess I'll have to live with it.

EDIT: just had a look on youtube for the 'real' rhino, and it looks tiny! Theres no way an 8 ft tall space marine in power armor would fit in that tiny driver's hole, which to me just further emphasizes how the GW tanks' dimensions are too small. Im not saying that my Chimera is 'correct' in terms of scaling, In fact after comparing it to a few minis it does look a bit big, but if it was just scaled up from a 40k one I think it would look wrong, either way I think it looks fitting for an APC in the 41st millenium.
Title: Re: Check out what I just won
Post by: Morcus on August 31, 2010, 10:48:08 PM
I've seen the old style rhinos modelled with 10 passengers. The vehicles may be slightly out of scale, but not by the amounts people make out. IFV's aren't designed with comfort in mind.

From the pictures I think the proportions look good.

Well, yes... the FV432 wasn't designed for Space Marines!

I admit, the FV432 is too small to use as a properly sized Rhino. Still, as the British Army don't design their vehicles to carry ten power armoured 7-8ft tall super soldiers, there aren't exactly going to be many surplus vehicles which you could use as a basis.
However, as an example of an APC vaguely similar in role to the Chimera, it does a reasonable job.

We're going around in circles!

But anyway, to put it to bed, I agree that it is slightly too big, but not too big as to be unbelievable. Overall it is a mighty bit of kit and I think anyone who has the patience to build something like this has got my vote.

Also, the fv432 is a great achievement and hats off to the guys who built it, thanks for linking it, I hadn't seen that before.

Quotefv432 is a great achievement

No it isn't.  It's a piece of crap.  But it's better than walking and safer than a Land Rover (just).  Thank goodness the Army's getting rid of them - which explains why so many are coming onto the surplus market.

Actually, the 432 is a pretty small APC.  It certainly isn't an IFV (that's Infantry Fighting Vehicle, to you) and is designed for support and maintenance roles (my experience with it was in its Armoured Field Ambulance mode).  A better comparison with the Chimera is the Warrior IFV:

http://www.panzerbaer.de/types/pix/uk_ifv_warrior-007.jpg

As you can see, this has a superstructure about 7ft tall, so perhaps a measurement for a 54mm Chimera could reasonably be as much as 65mm.

I can't find it, but I know that there was a Golden Demon winner (I thought it was in the US) who built a 54mm chimera and accompanying Imperial Guard squad.  He was actually a member of the Conclave, back in its second iteration, IIRC.

Anyway, none of that is to the detriment of Kresten's win.  I wouldn't be anything like as super-critical if he'd actually built the Chimera, because I think it's awesome and will look fabulous when it's finished and on the tabletop.

I think he means the converted FV432 - i.e. the "Real Life Rhino".

Either way, we're now getting into a needlessly prolonged discussion. Ultimately, I think that the big point to be said for Inquisitor vehicle size is the practical issues of using an unnecessarily large model on an average table should definitely get a thought in.

I don't know about Kresten's typical gaming, but I'm pretty sure that thing wouldn't comfortably fit in amongst the tables I normally play on.

Bah, non-existent unfortunately! It would be a dominating piece I think, but any scenario in which its going to be viable I suppose would have to fit around it to a certain degree.

Anyway, Ive gotten as far as continuing the welding effect, (with a soldering iron) and im going to spend a lot of today attempting to build a web cannon out of removable pen ends, the bit that holds the nib and ink tube.

Wouldn't take too much work. I wouldn't bother putting webbers on it (the Castigator has those, but it's Rhino-chassis) and it removes the problem of the ball-lasguns because they're just firing hatches

(obviously ignore the wheels)
