Title: Midlandsy meet up...
Post by: Tyrant on November 16, 2011, 07:03:52 PM
Hello all,

Having looked through the "Index of where people live" it looks like it could be worth arranging a meet up around coventry/leicester/northampton ish. Having just been informed that GW quite often have a no SG rule in store  ::) I would appreciate suggestions of a place to set up.
It could be that a village hall is worth hiring if theres something cheap, I know my local one is (its just out the way)

Looking to do this a couple times a year and develop a campaign. Anyone with useful info/interested in turning up please reply.

Traveling wise im fairly flexible for a 2hour journey of a radius from Bicester, Oxon.

Nathan.

As I remember, Tony (Necris) lives in Birmingham, so it might be worth poking him too.

Necris is closer to Leeds, so most of a hundred miles difference there!

One thing to bear in mind, Tyrant - some people show up on the member map more than once. It's a list of nearby GWs, not exact locations, so people who are within range of several may show twice or three times. Player densities aren't necessarily as good as they might seem at first glance.
Also, as far as Coventry/Leicester/Northampton-ish, that's only about 40 miles (give or take 10 either way) south of Nottingham, so it's not exactly establishing itself hugely location-wise from the big WHW events.

That said, I'm certainly interested. Unfortunately, I haven't got any useful location suggestions, as I'm down in south Hertfordshire and not really in a prime location for others to trek down to.

Funnily enough, there's something that came up on GW's Facebook a while back...

Someone asked a question along the lines of "Is Forge World allowed in stores, because my manager says no", to which the response was roughly "All of GW's products should be welcome in our stores".

I was highly tempted to print the page out and take it into store.

and, strangely, Northampton is 1 minute quicker for me to get to than WHW!
i'm lucky in that there's a few guys who are 40k gamers so WHW is attractive (shared fuel! huzzah!) .. anywhere else.. less so :(

I can get to Hemel fairly easily if your wanna meet there too at some point- Bicester is on the A41 which ends there?

Yeah I think we could stage a protest... Occupy GW  ;)

Oddly enough, checking that out, it extends into the middle of London, past Marylebone. I must have crossed over it in mid-London once or twice without realising - which is a slightly odd thought, given it passes within a stone's throw of my house.
(For values of stone's throw that may involve a degree of cheating with a compressed air cannon.)

But yeah, I'm up for any games I can get. I'm not sure if it would be possible to scrounge up the other players from my group (who I now see only infrequently - and when I do, wargaming is often not top of our list), but I can try.

We can throw some dates for that around at some point, although it may depend on who I try to bribe and whether I use it as an excuse to finish a couple of the models which have been a bit sidelined because I wasn't expecting any chances to use them for aaaaaaaaaaages.

I've certainly got better odds of making it to get togethers in that part of the world than the WHW shindigs due to having friends in the area to crash with. Granted I've never played a game of Inquisitor in my life or made great shakes towards models as of yet. But it's something I've thought about for years, and deadlines are marvellous motivators ;D

I used to be in Birmingham but now I have withdrawn resources back to the north

I could however let Priesty Tom know about a planned meet up and sent him along  ;D

Hmm

I will ring GW coventry tomorrow as I personally think is best initial option...

:-\

EDIT: Hmm they reckon they only have one small table.
Inititally he said it was a game designed to play at home. heheh.

Yeah, I've visited Coventry GW before and it's pretty small.  If you fancy Leicester, we have both a slightly larger GW and a good few tables at Gifts for Geeks - I'm sure they'd let us play.  Otherwise, WHW is alwaysa good choice.

For me Leicester isn't to bad - plus the wife has family there.
Nottingham is a bit too far to do on a regular basis.
Do you think its worth setting up a poll?

*I have no organisation skills so suggestions on how to get this going would be good.

No, they have three medium sized tables. The best bet will be Escape Games in Coventry as they have a larger gaming hall upstairs (but sadly no scenery).

For me, Coventry is more practical and wallet-friendly. However, if there's a better venue at Leicester, then that's okay with me.
WHW isn't really a good option, as it wouldn't open the gaming up for people for whom the big Nottingham events are impractical, so you might as well just go and organise a full Conclave day in that case.

Also, while it'd be great to parade Inquisitor around, a regular GW store might not appreciate a table being monopolised for the whole day and is going to limit choice of models more.

Quote from: Tyrant on November 20, 2011, 10:54:53 AMI have no organisation skills.
Neither have I, but I still managed to run a full size event.

You need to get location suggestions, get votes on which one is best as far as ease of travel and facilities, contact them for availability, then get some votes on which of the available dates works for the possible attendees. Obviously, you then make a full booking.

Also, it would be a good idea to at least have a basic idea of what your event theme and setting will be at this point.

I'll take a look at Escape games. Also having a look at conference rooms / offices for hire.
Will keep you updated on findings.

When you say theme? - Campaign idea or dress code etc? ;)

If scenery is non existant than I have Spacehulk sections which if you've not seen is a card jigsaw/ childs road set.

(Which when me and a mate 1st bought the rule book we played Genestealers vs spacemarines to test it using the same Genestealer token/blip system. 5 space marines vs 40 odd Genestealers in Inquisitor = bloody imperial mess.)

If you're trying Games Workshops

Try Solihull or Sutton Coldfield stores one of the two used to have a strong Specialist Games following when I lived in the area and even staged Specialist Games tournaments now and again (I forget which one) they have also both got hobby centres so should have extra gaming tables.

Campaign idea, of course. That could be done anyway from writing it all yourself, through finding a co-writer, merely creating the basic setting for people to write scenarios within or all the way down to a fully communally written event.

But now that you've said dress code, I have this worrying recollection from the Autumn Conclave that I might have said that I'd turn up to an in-costume event as a Sister of Battle.

*idea*

Hotels often have rooms for business meetings. I will get a quote. Could be reasonable.

Theme ideas...Im happy for a bit of brain storming on that ...

My initial thought is A super weapon that is required to stop a spacehulk filled with Nids.
think fifth element.

I suspect not. Business meeting rooms are priced based on what they think they can charge businesses, not on a "fair" basis.

I think the best option is to look around independent gaming stores and see what they want for a table or two for the day. Probably one of the cheaper options, it'll provide more useful services and likely also tolerate people screaming "FOR THE EMPERAH!" rather better.

That would work for an Dark Heresy/etc/etc adventure, but doesn't exactly give the necessary ground for interplayer conflict Inquisitor needs - because except perhaps for players with Genestealer cults or particularly dogmatic Istvaanians, the players are largely going to be on the same side.

However, if it's simply about an ancient superweapon (with no big scary target to unify against) for the players to fight for control of, that would be feasible. Not breaking any new ground as plots go, but workable.

Oh dear. Like I needed another reason for Robey to think I'm maladjusted - he already has his suspicions based on my playing female characters in both the VoIP RP sessions.

Well, maybe I will anyway. I'm sure my public emasculation would prove a source of much entertainment.

Like I said, Escape Games would be your best bet for a table, but I doubt they have any scenery spare.

Yeah, I wouldn't if you plan to Coventry, the locals don't take kindly to anyone *not* wearing a tracksuit with dubious stains. :p

Nah, it'd be something to do for one of the WHW events.

I still don't know whether I'm joking.

Well a room and unlimited tea that holds around 8 people in the premier inn @ coventry is about £100 for the day. Better than I imagined but not amazing.

I will try and ring escape games today.

Nathan.

If we need to (and providing no one objects) we could have the game at my flat, we have a large table (but no scenery :(, please supply), its a ten minute walk from Tile Hill train station. I could cook for up to six people, and (providing the room is still unoccupied) we have a spare double room that can take up to three people (in sleeping bags, two on the bed and one on the floor) and another space on the couch.

Escape games seem friendly and said we are welcome. Good call Macabre.

Basically we would book out of courtesy / they do have events there (yoyo tournament I think he said - thats every 3weeks and there is one this weekend.)
Just message their facebook page to contact them.
They said there isn't a charge (would confirm on booking) but they'd ask that we buy snacks/drinks from them etc.

So I guess we need to confirm numbers/details so if you could post a response speficially saying yes.
Info needed - Date available - prefered location (venue and city?)

For me idealy.

21st Jan at Escape games in coventry.

Coventry is good for me (easy and cheap by train). And nominally, I'm probably okay for almost any Saturday, short of any big lifestyle changes.

Marco & anyone else who may benefit to a max of 4.

If you can get to Bicester I can drive you the rest as I'll be going by car anyway.

Thanks for the offer, but it's easier for me to just make a straight run at it.

Coventry and back is less than a tenner (woo, Railcards), but trying to make diversions to Bicester would actually take longer and cost more.

My knowledge of UK geography is awful (American and Irish upbringing will do that!) and so I had no idea that Bristol is only two hours from Coventry on the train... and so I am, with some prior notice, available and interested in a meet up! I've just quit my retail job to focus on the whole thesis thing, but that means I can in theory take a full day off here and there to do what I like.
