Making a change from modelling "grim dark" models (plus also I had parts left over from these (http://www.the-conclave.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=1782.0) guys...) I've decided to create some 54mm Skaven :)
Here is the first Skaven - Skrit:
Back (http://i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac196/VincZid/Img_036-1.jpg)
Hopefully I have made this the right scale, I used this (http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y187/Ursca/Mount%20and%20blade/Raceheightchartextracopy-1.jpg) picture for reference.
I have plans for a Grey Seer and an Assassin in the future, which I will post WIP pictures here when I have any :)
It looks very good, a real 54mm skaven. How tall is he? The only thing is that it maybe is a bit too bulky for a normal clanrat. But perhaps he has had some 'enhancements'...
Another update, this time with pictures of skaven gutter runner Snikt.
Back (http://i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac196/VincZid/Img_041-1.jpg) Left (http://i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac196/VincZid/Img_042-1.jpg) Right (http://i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac196/VincZid/Img_043-1.jpg)
I'm really happy with the amount of detail that I've managed to include without the model looking crowded.
QuoteHow tall is he? The only thing is that it maybe is a bit too bulky for a normal clanrat. But perhaps he has had some 'enhancements'...
Here (http://i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac196/VincZid/Img_044-1.jpg) is a comparison photograph with the two skaven models next to an average sized human. Snikt is a more accurate size using the reference picture, Skrit is very hunched over and is in a more crouched position.
Next up is the grey seer, WIP pictures to follow :)
The gutter runner is very good. He looks lean and mean like he should and the sculpting work is great. I really like the little things he carries with him.
two very characterful conversions, just the right size for 54mm Witch Hunter
QuoteHe looks lean and mean like he should and the sculpting work is great. I really like the little things he carries with him.
I'm glad the gutter runner came out looking more in line with the artwork I have found for Skaven. I wanted the gutter runner model to be carrying/wearing the "tools of the trade" - throwing stars, vials of poison, etc. Adds a lot more detail than I was able to achieve with the first model, Skrit.
I've almost finished the Grey Seer, just awaiting for some more heads to arrive from ebay. :)
Side (http://i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac196/VincZid/Img_046-1.jpg)
Same size as gutter runner Snikt, he fits in well scale-wise.
I'm now looking to sculpt some more skaven, if anyone has any other ideas please feel free to post below - they may even get used in the future. ;D
Comments and criticism welcome as usual.
The grey seer looks good so far,if you are really crazy you could try sculpting a rat ogre, but what I think is still missing is a lowly slave.
Bad news: The heads arrived from eBay, but are far too large to fit the scale of the models :(
To work around this, I have decided to give press moulding a go - which worked quite well.
So here is the finished Grey Seer
(http://i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac196/VincZid/Img_048-1.jpg)
Back (http://i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac196/VincZid/Img_049-1.jpg)
I'm also partway through working on a plague censer bearer
(http://i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac196/VincZid/Img_050-1.jpg)
Back (http://i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac196/VincZid/Img_051.jpg)
There's still a lot more details to add to this, no forgetting the end of the flail - which is being worked on before attachment to the chain. I'll post more pictures when complete.
I'm also working on the "lowly slave" idea suggested by Dolnikan, but no pictures yet.
Comments and criticism welcome as always :)
They both look very good, although the pictures are bit bit blurry. The grey seer looks like a grey seer should look, imposing and commanding.
some very nice sculpting work, the two ones ones are looking great
QuoteThey both look very good, although the pictures are bit bit blurry.
Sadly due to the lighting at the time, these were the best I could do :(
I'm currently in the process of painting the 4 characters, once complete I will take photographs with better conditions :)
On a related note, does anyone have any recommendations for painting techniques for skaven skin/fur, or any links to anywhere that might prove useful?
I came across this thread (http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?337324-My-painting-guide-to-my-skaven-and-in-general) on Warseer the other day. That chap got his Skaven looking pretty fine.

Ok, it's been quite a while since I've had any time to get online and update this topic with my progress.
So here are some photos of the completed and WIP painting on the shaven:

I'm thinking of adding some iconography to the tabards, any suggestions would be welcome :)

Both of these are still WIP, I will post more photos when they are finished.
In other news I have also created this guy:

Built to scale again, however he's not as "round" as 28mm dwarfs are shown as. Maybe this is a mistake, but I feel that slayers are a bit more athletic than regular dwarfs.
Two more sculpts that I've been working on:

The second sculpt is pretty much done and should be ready for painting soon.
Hopefully I won't leave it so long next time before the next update, please feel free to leave comments below.
The paintjobs look good. Your sculpting work on the two humans is really great though, I take it those are 50 or 60mm bases you've got them on though? doesn't look like 40mm ones.
All these models are based on 40mm bases. The human sculpts are slightly smaller than the standard "heroic" 54mm inquisitor models, plus the leg poses take up less of the area of the bases. I think this makes the bases look more empty.
These look ace. Can you get a group shot of them with a standard Inquisitor model so I can see the scale differences, please?
I wished GW had made 54mm figs back in the days of WHFRP.
Wow, its been 8 months since I last updated this? Well, here are a few pictures that will hopefully make up for my lack of updates...

My apologies for leaving it so long to reply to this, but here is a comparison pic of my sculpted humans net to an INQ model:

The sculpted humans are slightly smaller that the INQ model, but are very close.

Here is an update on the sculpting of the empire rifleman. I've redone the feet - as I felt they looked a bit off before. I may add detail to the rifle (engraving or patterning maybe?)
Another figure I've been working on is a headsman:
(http://i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac196/VincZid/null_zps95f225c1.jpg) (http://s899.photobucket.com/user/VincZid/media/null_zps95f225c1.jpg.html)
Back (http://i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac196/VincZid/null_zpse23ed666.jpg)
The only thing I am unsure about is the legs - I'm not totally convinced that the trousers really fit with the fantasy vibe that the rest of the models have.
I have also almost finished a wizard:
(http://i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac196/VincZid/null_zps722742a4.jpg) (http://s899.photobucket.com/user/VincZid/media/null_zps722742a4.jpg.html)
Back (http://i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac196/VincZid/null_zps908a7db1.jpg)
Still need to finish the arm and the ponytail. I'm not totally sure that the stye ties in to warhammer fantasy - but I'm still pleased with the currect appearance.
I also am currently working on an empire swordsman/captain:
(http://i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac196/VincZid/null_zps5e73b98c.jpg) (http://s899.photobucket.com/user/VincZid/media/null_zps5e73b98c.jpg.html)

And with the shield arm attached:
(http://i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac196/VincZid/null_zps454a79fc.jpg) (http://s899.photobucket.com/user/VincZid/media/null_zps454a79fc.jpg.html)
I'm quite happy with how this one is going so far, it ties in quite well with the warhammer fantasy style. I still need to finish the head, add details to the armor plates and find a sheathed sword to go on his belt. (if anyone can recommend a good one, as I have yet to find something right)
The most recent model is the local innkeeper :)
(http://i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac196/VincZid/null_zps5c7699d7.jpg) (http://s899.photobucket.com/user/VincZid/media/null_zps5c7699d7.jpg.html)
Back (http://i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac196/VincZid/null_zps07e835e7.jpg)
Not totally sold on the sculpting on the padded trousers, so I may redo them - I'd like to hear people's thoughts on them. This was my first full face sculpt that I am really happy with. Not sure if you can make it out on the pic, but I really like the double chin he's got going :)
And finally, what kind of innkeeper would he be without this:
(http://i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac196/VincZid/null_zpsb359c79c.jpg) (http://s899.photobucket.com/user/VincZid/media/null_zpsb359c79c.jpg.html)
Back (http://i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac196/VincZid/null_zps22438855.jpg)
Scratch-built from the ground up, based off this image: (http://img.qj.net/uploads/articles_module/71642/Empire%20Building%204_qjpreviewth.jpg) Still needs a lot of work (finishing the outer walls is the current stage).
Once I am done with these sculptures I will start painting and repost with some finished work for a change :)
Any advice or comments is greatly appreciated as always.
It looks damn good in general; there's a lot of stuff here I'd be very happy to have done myself!
The thing I'd warn you about is the pelvic area on some of the models. The swordsman and barkeep both seem to have too much space between their legs.
(Even if were they women, with the need for enough space to shove babies out through there, I think it might still be a bit much).
Thanks Marco, looking back at some of my previous sculpting work (especially the heads...) I feel that I have made good progress with getting proportions far more on the realistic side. Just goes to show: if you keep practicing and learning through mistakes, you can improve :)
QuoteThe thing I'd warn you about is the pelvic area on some of the models. The swordsman and barkeep both seem to have too much space between their legs.
Looking back, I totally agree about the leg spacing. The swordsman should be fairly easy to sort out, and I already have plans to redo the legs of the innkeeper - so I can sort this out at the same time.
Nice work, the inn keeper is good but as marco says, pelvic region needs work. This stuff puts my feeble attempts at sculpting to shame, can't wait to see more of these, anything else in the pipeline?
Also like the inquisitor model, nice job there, is that the bodyguard torso?
QuoteNice work, the inn keeper is good but as marco says, pelvic region needs work.
I've already started reworking the innkeepers legs. The hips have been brought in and the awful puffy trousers have been stripped down for another attempt. I'll post pics once this has been fixed :)
QuoteThis stuff puts my feeble attempts at sculpting to shame
All I can say is keep trying, I looked back at some of my work from a year ago here (http://www.the-conclave.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=861.0)
and saw how much certain areas I have improved on (especially the heads and faces, my earlier attempts were oversized blobs). For anyone interested in sculpting, I really recommend the guides in the modelling resource section (http://www.the-conclave.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=22.0) and to really research and source pictures if you are aiming to sculpt something very specific, rather than going from memory.
Quotecan't wait to see more of these, anything else in the pipeline?

Right now I want to get all the unfinished models cluttering my desk finished and painted before I start anything else, but I am always looking for new ideas - so if anyone has any suggestions, you may see them at some point :) I'm currently sticking with the Empire, but may expand to other races/regions later.
Inquisitor Istovan Crane in that picture is made from Eisenhorn's legs, bodyguard's torso and forearms, Kal Jericho's las-pistol and holster, Rogue Trader's sword and scabbard and the Imperial Guard gas-mask.
Superb stuff here.
For the legs of the headsman, how about bindings around the ankles and calves?

Good idea Van Helser :)
Here are updated pictures... taken in really poor lighting conditions.
I'll try taking some better ones tomorrow EDIT: New pictures taken in better lighting

I'm happy with the headsman's legs, however I'm still unsure about the legs of the innkeeper - but they are much better than they were before.
Photos with painted stuff will hopefully follow soon.
Ok, here are some painted models ;D
First up, the Empire soldier/captain. Tried to correct the legs mentioned before, but I may have not moved them close enough (on these pictures there looks almost no difference from before...) Overall I am happy with how it turned out.

Back (http://i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac196/VincZid/null_zpse8833dba.jpg)
Next to be finished was the Priest of Sigmar. I'm not so happy with some of the sculpting of the armor padding on his back, just looks a bit rough.

Ok, I lied about not sculpting anything else until I had painted what I have already made. However a friend visited recently and on seeing my current work, insisted I sculpt a character taking inspiration from a very popular video game character. (Of which most of you will guess within 3 seconds of looking at the photograph) Sculpted and painted in under a week, the pose is not nearly as dynamic as I wanted, but the detail is good considering how quickly I darted through this one.

The most recent to be finished is the innkeeper. I'm still not happy with the legs... don't ask me why, as I'd probably start rambling and come up with a list as long as my arm. Rather than trying to fix something that appears to be refusing to be mended, I decided to move on. (I'm having enough trouble with the wizard sculpt to keep redoing this one)

I'm currently working on painting the Empire rifleman and the other 2 skaven, hoping to get them done soon.
As usual comments and ideas for new sculpts are greatly appreciated.
The sculpts are looking really good and very characterful for warhammer.
The painting, especially of the metal, helps to bring them to life.
I like these alot and am looking forward to seeing the remaining models progress (and any more that you create in the mean time)

I think I'm just about happy with the final hairstyle, only took about 6 attempts to get to this...
The right arm was a problem to get looking natural holding the staff, the first two poses I sculpted just seemed awkward.
I have also done some resculpting work on the grey seer - more detail added and the staff has been improved. Once it has been painted I will upload some photos.
I think the sculpting work there is top notch. It's probably the best-executed so far.

Just a few more characters left to paint and I'm all caught up. Work on the inn is going well, starting putting on the cornerstones and masonry around the door. Does anyone know where I can find textured wallpaper or material to represent cobblestone that would look the right scale for 54mm miniatures?
I'm currently halfway through painting the final skaven character, plus I've got the wizard base coated and ready for painting, so I should have another update soon.
very nice work, i like that the grey seer has a pet, for some reason most of my inquisitor warbands include some sort of pet creature despite me not having a pet myself?
the wizard is looking good, interested to see him painted
looking cracking all round :)
Just a quick update to show my progress with the inn:
Currently adding the stones to the lower walls. I've sculpted wooden planks on the underside of the overhang on the upper level.
It hides all the joins and connected parts, so looks much better. I'm a bit conflicted about if I should now add wooden texture to all of the wooden beams, or paint them to look like wood later. I still need to finish the plaster walls on the top levels, which I'll finish after the stone walls.
The wizard is almost fully painted, I'll post some pictures once done.
Sculpting under an overhang that'll never be seen by players? That's dedication.
Considering how many exposed beams are in it's construction, it'll probably be significantly faster to just paint a wood effect.
Quote

The amount of time I have put into this building has been crazy, but I'd much rather put in as much detail and effort as I can - otherwise I'll look at it once it's been painted and cringe at all the bits I'm not happy with.
I'm halfway through sculpting all the wood effect on the exposed beams, after which I will finish the plaster walls and start detailing the windows.
I have also been working on some more giant rats :)

Hopefully at some point I can sculpt a Skaven Packmaster to lead these rats.

good stuff, wizard isnt too blingy which is good, the rat pack would indeed look great with a handler and the clan rat looks great as well, looking forward to some more painted stuff especially th einn when you get around to it
