Title: Quickdraws WIPs w/New model just added!
Post by: Quickdraw McGraw on June 17, 2012, 01:01:00 AM
Hello Fellow Conclavers,

It has been a year since I checked in with the Forum.  For me it comes and goes in cycles.  Usually when I get around to working on my hobbies again.  I don't really have time for playing but I still love to create and paint models based on the 41st millennium.

So I thought this time I would start a new topic displaying my WIPs.  This I believe will help keep me focused.  Plus it's a real enjoyment for me to see everyone else's progress on their own projects.  I'll be posting new ones as they come far enough in their progress to be seen clearly.

There has been a lot of new threads and discussions since I've been away.  I can't wait to get caught up in between coats of paint.  ;)

I'm currently working on a Mutant Freedom Fighter warband.  But first I'm trying to complete a model I started over a year ago.  This is a tribute to my favorite Space Marine Chapter.  Blood Angels.

Lazarus- Blood Angels Vanguard Veteran

Equipment:  Chainsword, Inferno pistol and jump pack

Completely glued and primed

Left side   The jump pack looks twice as big as it really is.   It's just the angle on my camera.

Thanks for viewing.   :)

P.S.  A special thanks to Replica for the inspiration.

Thanks for the kind words of encouragement.   :)

I base coated it this morning with Mechrite red.  Monday I'll start the inking process to deepen the red.

Just wanted to upload some more updates on Lazarus.  I first inked it in Baal Red, 50/50 Devlan mud/water and then again with Baal Red.

The red really is coming alive. I also really like the back of the jump pack, unless I'm mitaken again I think that it is the first shot of it that we get to see.

An exceptionally skilful conversion.  I think this is the first time I've seen a 54mm jump pack, and you've absolutely nailed it.

@ Dolnikan & Van Helser-  Thanks you're too kind!  It was my first attempt at anything this big.  I sat down with a 28mm jump pack, pictures from the Codex, some Milliput and put my best effort into it.  I still feel a little self conscious about it, but that's just me.

So I'm going to post some WIP pictures of the jump pack itself.  I have others as well if anyone is interested.   :)

I honestly thought this must be a 28mm scale model purely on the basis of the fact that they don't make 54mm scale jet-packs. My jaw hit the floor when I realised it was a self-sculpt!

I wish I could sculpt like this!

@ Inquisitor Goldeneye-  I'm happy to hear that I fooled your eye.  I honestly didn't think I could do it.  But I broke it down into steps and kept at it til it looked right.  It's not perfect but I am very happy with the results.  :)

I've begun painting the various layers of red.  I'll post some new ones in a few days.

Thanks the words of encouragement everyone.  :)

Hello fellow Conclavers,

It's been a few days and I promised I would post more updates.

Not entirely impressive at this stage but with the red about 80%. With all the other colored features blacked out you can see all the detail
a little better I think.

I'll check back in soon.  Hope you all enjoy the rest of your weekends.   :)

Thanks!  I'm glad your watching this topic and enjoying.
The red is the easy part.  Most of the black will be metallics.
Because he's a veteran, gold is the order of the day.  :P
And it can be slow going with so many layers.

But I'll keep posting till it's finished and then off to the next challenge. :)

Cheers,
Josh

Good Day Fellow Clavers!   :)

I have no up dated pics at this moment.  However all is going very well.  I was hoping to getting the help of
some of our Latin speaking brothers.

The scrolling on the left shoulder beneath the Iconography is going to say "Sanguinus".   But the right will have a portrait of
Sanguinus face and say "Blood of my Blood" in Latin.  I looked up the wording and I need to know if it's correct...

"Cruor de meus cruor".

Is This correct? I didn't just say a curse word or something?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Josh

It should be good enough for High Gothic - indeed, I came across a claim on Warseer that the Studio/BL policy is that only Great Crusade era High Gothic is grammatically correct latin, but 41st Millenium High Gothic is more like dog latin, with latinised greek mixed in.
Title: Re: Quickdraws WIPs
Post by: KrautScientist on July 01, 2012, 04:22:20 PM
First of all, let me say that I am not a Latin buff, so take this with a grain of salt.

But is there any reason why you are using "cruor" instead of "sanguis"?

Also, I just did a small search on the matter, and discovered this on "Yahoo Answers":

A similar phrase in the Bible from the Vulgate is "bone of my bones". The Vulgate says "os ex ossibus meis". So blood of my blood would likewise be "sanguis ex sanguine meo".

In any case, DapperAnarchist is right: The GW studion usually seem to just throw in some Latin they remember from church service -- and even those guys didn't always get it right. As long as it looks "gothic" and grimdark enough, you should be fine  ;D
Title: Re: Quickdraws WIPs
Post by: Quickdraw McGraw on July 01, 2012, 05:14:11 PM
Thanks for the quick replays!   ;D

Dapperanarchist-  yes I believe you're right.  Any Latin/Gothic will do.

Krautscientist- I did a search on an online translator and that's what it gave me. But I do like your words better.  As long as it's readable I'm cool with it.

Thanks for both of yours help!  :)

Josh

I personally ould go for cruor cruoris mei. Cruor is in the nominative, cruoris mei in the genitive. This should be the correct phrase. This sort of thing at least gives me the idea that I didn't learn the language for nothing. Cruor also has a slightly different meaning than sanguis, cruor can also refer to bloodshed, while sanguis has a cleaner meaning.
Title: Re: Quickdraws WIPs

Speaking only for myself, I tend to take the view that perfect Latin is in fact imperfect High Gothic - that is to say, it's Canis Latinicus by design. My usual MO is to run a given word or phrase through Google Translate (as my personal command of Latin could be generously described as slipshod), then adjust the results to the point that it rolls off the tongue properly. The end result of this is generally something that's just barely intelligible to a fluent speaker, but has that all-important "feel".

In other words, what Dapper said. :P ;D

(Oh - and before I forget, beautiful work on the jump pack. My initial reaction was something along the lines of "Bah! Not another 28mm thread." ;D)

Thanks for the help fellows.    :)

I went to a few other translator websites and punched in the various suggestions everyone made.  Everything pretty much says word for word the blood of my blood.  After rolling the different sentences off my tongue for a while.  I've settled with cruor cruoris mei.  Plus it's a smaller sentence.  ;)

Thanks everyone for your help!  Back to painting.  :)

I'm just a very detailed individual.   ;D  Maybe too much so.   ;)

Lovely work. But you knew that already. So...

Quote from: Quickdraw McGraw on July 30, 2012, 03:50:42 PMAny criticism would be nice too. I'm not just being modest.

Criticism you say? My very favourite word. ;)

-Paint's a touch thick in places (thighs, jet cowling).

-A lot of your metallics look a bit splotchy, though I probably wouldn't notice at 1:1, except perhaps for on the jump pack's fuel line. Another layer or two of blending would have been good there, or maybe some wet blending if you think you're up for that sort of thing. (I'd recommend using a retarding agent if you ever do plan to experiment in that direction.)

-Your freehand could be sharper, particularly on the loincloth, and the hazard stripes are somewhat uneven as well. I'm a bit torn with regards to the technique you've used to suggest text on the purity seals - it looks a bit naff in the photos, but I suspect it might be quite effective in person.

-While you've done quite well with the glowing eyes, the glowing jets are decidedly less convincing. I think a big part of the problem is that they don't really "pop" against their red housing. I might've given the innards a sort of scorched metallic look, to give the glow something to play against.

-I'm not sure about the blood spatter. I can't really find specific fault with it; it's simply one of those things that's far more difficult than it looks to pull off well. My only suggestion is that red paint is not the best thing to use. I had this red/chestnut ink combination that worked quite well back in the day, but I'm not sure what I'd use now. Might be worth googling "blood spatter" and making a proper study of it if it's something you plan on doing a lot.

That's about it, then. Bet you wish you hadn't asked. ;) ;D

This is probably the only excuse I have is the clear coat was spurting out of the can.  So I had to wipe it on with a brush.  I do in fact water all my acrylics down to keep them smooth.

This I have no excuse for... I rushed the paint job.  Sadly, I'm slow so I was behind on my own goals.  I did try to make the loincloth old and worn by not giving it a sharper look but this failed.  Any suggestions I would gladly take.  How's the free hand on the shoulder?  It's a side profile of Sanguinus.

I painted the exhaust of my sanguinary guard glowing blue.  But I wanted to remain true to photos of jet packs with flames coming out the exhaust.  Red against the red jet housing doesn't look right. So I tried the hazard chevron to break it up.  It didn't come out like i planned either.

I flicked red ink onto the chainsword.  I'll try the brown/red next time.  To give it a dried/caked on/gory look.

I'm going to print this out and place it under the model on the shelf.  When I come back to him in a few years, I'll do it better.   ;D

Thanks for the input!

I think the marine looks great.  Always good to see a big project come to completion... I'm terrible for getting things half done and then losing interest!

I've been working on battle damage for armour recently and thought I could share a recommendation: silver over black is one way to do it, but I've found that you can get more effective looking battle damage with splodges of Black/Scorched Brown mix (25:75) that have a thin outline of a very sharp highlight of your main armour colour along the lower edges of the damaged area.  For your Blood Angel, a Blood Red/Sunburst Yellow mix 50:50 would be about right.  There's a good picture over on buypainted (http://buypainted.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/vindicator-2.jpg) which illustrates the finished article.  Not my work of course, but where I got the inspiration!

Do either of you know which color to do his skin?  I don't have any experience with mutant skin.  I'm planning on painting the flak vest brownish.  So maybe grey or green would be a good contrast?

Oh I'm not good with matching colours. Have you thought of looking at some reptiles to try and mimic their skin colours? Poisoned frogs and a lot of snakes have very striking colours that would probably lend themselves onto models. Otherwise, what about looking at different daemon models that GW has released? Pink, blue, yellow/brown, green are a few different skin colours that spring to mind. It seems a wash of colour, like blue for example, over a white basecoat lends itself very good for mutant skin.

I'm interested in seeing what you make of this, as I'm making some mutants for my warband too, good luck!

I'd probably go with a pale human look, maybe like an ashen grey sort of colour (I have some guard abhumans painted up like that and it looks reasonable).

For the full mutant though, I'd suggest that you reverse the standard skin pigment of the planet. So if the twins were in the lower area of a hive world and were deprived of sun light, thus making them a whiter than normal colour if they were normal, switch it for darker than normal. So a planet of albinos would mean that the twins would have jet black skin etc.

The skin tone looks good, very mutanty (I know, I know English is my strongsuit :P).
My only suggestion would be maybe tone down the green and then put a greener colour in the recesses.
Just my 2 cents.

It looks very good, a bit sickly like one would expect for a mutant but still natural.

The skin I believe is finished.  I toned down the skin a bit and washed the black recesses with green and devan mud ink.  The purple dyed hair however did not turn out!  >:(  It's not bright enough.  My purples had dried up beyond hope.  It's been years since I used them.  I mixed red and blue together until it turned out but I'm not happy with it. I'll pick up some purples this week and redo it.  Or I could just paint it black to save time and money.  Options?

You could always do what I once did, think that you paint something purple and have it turn out bright pink.(Only then it was my hair)

But seriously, I would try to get some new purple, purple hair is cool

Hello everyone!  ;D

It's been a little while but I'm still plugging away at it.  I got a little bogged down when I started working on two at the same time but here is another I've been working on.  Sorry, it won't get painted just yet.  I want to finish my mutant war band before I start painting them.  The Janis twins were the only exception.  But I only did their skin.

This is Titus the Pit fighter from Baal Prime.  His right hand is an implanted electro-flail, he carries a revolver in holster and an short assegai spear (made for thrusting and slashing).

Hope you enjoy.  I'd love to hear any comments.

Thanks,

is that sculpted armour on the body? I don't recognise it as from any model I've seen.

Yes, i tried to sculpt it in the image of NFL padding.  I only half succeeded.   :)

It's come out looking pretty good the armour, in any event.  The short, stabbing spear seems a little intimidating for such a weapon, but I guess pitfighters do tend towards the visually impressive.

I agree.  It reminds me of the armor designs in the older chapters of the Fallout series.  8)

Thanks for the kind words!  I really appreciate it.   :)

Odd thing about the short spear is the camera made it look much bigger than it really is.  Its a little over half his height.   :P
