Title: Music for games!!

Hello all,

This was quite a large topic on the old clave. Would like to start it again.

Any thoughts?

Opeth. (Damnation and Deliverence)

Dragonforce. (Sonic Firestorm and Valley of the Damned)

Edguy.(Mandrake)

Ride of the Valkyries etc.
To be honest classical music and prog rock is generally very atmospheric. Add some power metal for the gun fights, although it does become less easy to concentrate.

Carl Orff, Richard Wagner any of the "heavy" classical scores and obviously Holst's Mars Bringer of War.

Nooo, not Mars! Not after hearing it over and over and over again at Games Day!

To be more constructive, game music oddly works well as background music. It's designed with ambience in mind so it works nicely played over a little roleplaying section.

Unless it's the Mushroom Kingdom, of course

InFlames - Come Clarity Album
Nickleback - The Long Road Album
and strangely enough 50 Cent - Amusement Park went really well when my Inq was in a bar trying to seduce the Barmaid (who was actually a Death Cultist, lol my GM was pissed when he wrote that)

I normally just play whatever music I'm into at the time really.

There are a lot of pieces of music that I use, which I would highly recommend.

End of Days-Main theme, by John Debney - Link: ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1rhEFKrgBVc&feature=related )

Evil Nocturne, by Intero - Link: ( http://www.newgrounds.com/audio/listen/90297 )

That's just a few pieces that I use, but that newgrounds website has a truly massive collection of free-to-download music which you can use for whatever you like.

My cousin played Eminem - Puke during a bar brawl lol. it went pretty well, although my character ended up getting shot 6 times in the stomach and ended up with his intestines around his feet

not puking exactly but close enough

don't talk to me about puking and intestines... I had to eat my intestines in a play once. I don't like sweet food and they were constructed using rice pudding, food colouring, cake, fake blood and jelly all wrapped up in intestinal shapes using condoms...

Try eating that maniacally for 10 mins whilst talking without throwing up and you'll understand the mindset that came up with my torture scenario that members of the old clave may remember I subjected Machelor to last year...

Any one else got any weird influences (musical or otherwise) for WRITING scenarios, not jsut playing.

off-hand, can't say I do...

QuoteAny one else got any weird influences (musical or otherwise) for WRITING scenarios, not just playing.

I reckon it's generally a good rule of thumb to have at least one piece of highly interactive terrain (e.g. a pile of oil drums full of promethium, a large central staircase), the type of thing that will generate those moments of movie-cool, without overpowering your scenario - unless of course you want said item to be a key part (e.g. 1 side racing to climb the ladder to the top of the watchtower to sound the alarm, while the other side races to stop them).

I'm also an advocate of GMs doing evil and unpredictable things. (e.g. "oh dear, that rickety bridge doesn't look like it's strong enough to hold four people jumping around hitting each other on it...")

On topic though, I can't say I'm fussed by music, 30% of my inquisitor games have been at Warhammer World, where there isn't any. With nearly all the rest being at GW Glasgow, where the playlist is, like all GWs, always eclectic and something you block out.

As game soundtracks have been mentioned, I'll add film soundtracks to the list as well.
Personally, I keep the soundtrack from "The Rock" around, because the "against the odds action in cramped spaces" works well for Inq. I've got things from a generous number of other films too of course.

I've also got the instrumental tracks from the 2nd CD of the special edition of Nightwish's Dark Passion Play album (I tend to prefer to use instrumentals for background music) - seriously, Poet and the Pendulum over an "end of the world" type scenario... pure perfection.

At this point, I'll suggest people check out "Freeplay music", a site that does a lot of music which is pretty good for backing. I'll recommend "Minister of Pain" from the off, although it is somewhat short.

Well not scenarios but most of my characters are semi based on music, I find a song helps give a idea of the character and personality behind your characters.

For example my main inquisitor fits with Bob Dylan's "Hard Rains A-Gonna Fall", a rogue trader with Jimmy Web's "Highwayman", and a couple of characteres with Greg Johnson songs ("Liberty" and "Beautiful Storm")

Well, this is something i use more for Dark Heresy than Inquisitor, but its really a matter of theme.

Dark Ambient music is great for any kind of tense or horror theme. I will admit that i hadn't listened to the genre at all until about a month ago, when i bought the 'Continue' album by Lull. Since then i have hunted down their entire discography.
The entire album is just one 'track', and it is an hour of dark, atmospheric and tense sound. (So the atmosphere does not get broken by a song change  ;) )
It doesn't really have any distinctive melodies or rhythmic patterns, but it is precisely the kind of 'atmospheric music' you would get in a sci fi horror movie (case in point, can anyone hum something from the Aliens movies?).

;D I love listening to their music while i am writing the next weeks DH game, it really puts me in a mood to put my players' (characters) through a lovecraftian nightmare

For classical music, Saint-Saƫns' Danse Macabre is a must, and for metal... i would say Rhapsody, but the fantasy themes might jar. Maybe some Dio, if thats your thing

all of my opinions should be hinged on the fact that i am a music student majoring in composition, so my musical tastes are... eclectic at best, and downright insane at worst. I'm not arguing that my views are more valid because of this, rather that your millage may vary, especially on more sane engines

Anything by Immediate Music, X-Ray Dog, E.S. Posthumous (especially Pompeii), Epicon (released by Immediate Music), Two Steps From Hell, and on an original note Ligetti's Lux Aeterna and composed by Clint Mansell, O'Verona by Craig Armstrong (perfect for and end of game boss appearance) and Summon The Worms by (I think) Brian Tyler.

Available for free on the official game website is MooZe's soundtrack for S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl - ambient, dark, sinister, paranoid, wonderful. I also associate Godspeed You! Black Emperor with Inquisitor for some reason...

Hm. It may not work so well for Inquisitor, but I've found that some folk metal (Cruachan, Eluveitie) gets a good atmosphere for role-playing games.

As this thread has come up again, I'll talk about one of my other habits regarding music and Inquisitor.

I occasionally give my characters "theme music". A piece of music, that whatever reason, I associate with them.
Perhaps I think would form the basis for their leitmotif in a film, maybe it has lyrics that suit them - or sometimes, it's just a piece I think they'd like.

Anyone else do something similar?

Title: Re: Music for games!!

I came up with an idea for a character based entirely on the Black Flag song "Rat's Eyes" - I see the world through rat's eyes, rat's eyes, rat's eyes...

I always find it interesting how inevitably the recommendations for things like this are metal - it always makes me wonder whether this reflects upon the themes of much metal or the type of person who generally plays games like this. It's probably a bit of both.

A main ongoing inspiration for many characters has been Mark Lanegan's cover of 'Man In The Long Black Coat' - both its lyrics and general feel. 'The Outsider' by A perfect Circle is another inspiration for me when designing characters, and i find any album by Tool is good background music while gaming.

A surprising one is either of the 'Ambient Works' albums by Aphex Twin - but especially the first. I listen to it whenever i read my favourite book, Neuromancer, and the combination of the two often gives my inspiration for new characters (although as a result, the characters are often a little more cyberpunk than your average 40k character).

Depeche Mode, surprisingly enough, is an ongiong inspiration - especially 'Enjoy The Silence', more for the lyrics than the atmosphere. The album 'Murder Ballads' by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds is another that inspires me through lyrics rather than feel.

I find that inspiration can come from many different types of music, either through lyrics or atmosphere though, so i generally make playlists of lots of different songs by different artists from different genres to fit the mood of the game.

Well, I can't quite say that I find Ska or 60s pop particularly good background music for Inquisitor.

While I wouldn't suggest metal if I didn't like it, there's a whole lot of music I like that I wouldn't use for Inquisitor - and indeed, some pieces I use for Inquisitor, but which I seldom listen to casually.
Title: Re: Music for games!!

I agree that the two examples you give would be ill suited but there are plenty of genres other than metal that would fit. Darker themed electronica is ideal (as i suggested in my post), industrial is absolutely perfect, dark ambient is great, there's a lot of suitable alt. rock (smashing pumpkins comes to mind) and goth can fit very well (e.g. detonation boulevard by sisters of mercy, or a rock and a hard place).

My point was only that there are suitable and unsuitable genres, Ska and 60s rock would mainly be the latter, but metal isnt the only (or even, necessarily the most suitable) of the former.

To continue on this theme (pun intended), I figured I should give some examples:

Inquisitor Marco Robert Skoll:
- Amaranth (Instrumental) - Nightwish: This piece is pretty symbolic of Marco's personality. With the powerful bass line and drums the strong-willed core to his mind, the "choruses" (depending on how far through the track, and thus, how powerful they are) are either the brighter side of his character, or the forceful and formidable side that you don't mess with.
- Fanfare for the common man - Aaron Copland: The title counts, pretty much.  Marco perceives an Inquisitor as a job, not a person - behind his role, he still sees himself as little removed from any other human (a curious off-shoot of his homeworld's culture).

Staff Sergeant Silva Abigail Birgen:
- Eramaan Viimeinen (Instrumental) - Nightwish: This piece, quite bright in tone and with some real energy, fits quite well with Silva's personality.
- Killing in the name - Rage against the Machine: The lyrics mirror Silva's general attitude to the Imperium. She no longer has any respect or tolerance for people who don't have respect for her - were she an Inquisitor, she'd pretty much be a Recongregator.

Marco/Silva:
-When tomorrow comes - Eurythmics: Lyrically, this song brilliantly describes the relationship of the pair.

Marie Laetitia Serephine Deveraux (Frost):
- Septimus - Ilan Eshkeri: Quick in pace and varying between light and dark tones, this piece is Frost in a nutshell.

Inquisitor Lyra Joandra Rhodes:
- Go your own way - Fleetwood Mac: The tone of this song goes with the lighter side of Lyra's character. The lyrics are appropriate too (for the most part, at least) - over her life Lyra has had to make some decisions to let people she cared about go.

~~~~~
Anyway, I am not in bed. I should be in bed. This situation requires remedying.
I'm going to risk putting my head on the chopping block here and say that metal tends not to make for appropiate soundtrack style music for the Inquisitor. Here's why - Inquisitor is about holding back the despairingly large plethora of threats to human existence for just a little bit longer. It's seldom hopeful, it's dark, and in many cases, it's tragic. Metal in general tends to end up being a sort of half-serious celebration of prehistoric ideas of masculinity.
As for theme music, well I'm Not Working (Manic Street Preachers) fits Explicator Marin da Massilia to a T. She's burnt out and emotionally drained from working for Lord Inquisitor Dantini, and frankly assuming that sooner or later she'll be disposed of. And doesn't care anymore
Got to agree with the doom metal suggestion - Anathema is a personal favourite of mine from that genre - A Fine Day To Exit is intriguing and dark. While I agree that Deep Purple, for example would be unsuitable, a band like Cult Of Luna would be perfect.
Metal is a wide term, and while New Wave Of British Heavy Metal bands (such as Iron Maiden or Motorhead) are unsuitable, Sluge, Doom, Industrial and Gothic metal can all be very good for the 40K 'verse.
However, sticking by what I said earlier, metal in all shapes and forms is not the ONLY source, or IMO the best. I personally prefer to get my inspiration from darker alternative rock bands, being of the opinion that quieter music (in general) can be much more sinister than louder music.
In response to Marco, as theme songs for characters go, Severin Reed is (perhaps too obviously) inspired by Venus In Furs by The Velvet Undergorund (Severin from the name of the book/film/song's main character, Reed from Lou Reed), and Wicked Willie is actually inspired by a combination of a lot of punk music ('I am an antichrist and I am an anarchist!').
The general attitude and feel of punk, the unrest, the anger, and its tendancy towards anarchy are all themes I wanted Willie to express. Celtic Punk bands such as Dropkick Murpheys, with their heroic portrayal of the 'working class' (think 'Boys On The Docks') really inspired me to want to create a character who was more than a rebellious idiot (as punks are sometimes portrayed), but a brilliant person who was brought up under poorer conditions, accounting for Willie's exceptional intelligence.
Call me crazy if you like, but I guarantee that you can find something by Dylan to fit any scenario (or character, or whatever). For Inquisitor, a personal favourite of mine is All Along the Watchtower (also Inquisitor Malkevid's unofficial theme song). Not Dark Yet can also work quite well in the right context. You could probably find a completely appropriate and in-genre song for a summoning ritual if you tried hard enough. The man's work is omnifarious.
That's your word of the day, incidentally.
To be fair, you can find some Dylan to fit literally any theme, full stop.
These kind of threads on 40K forums seem to only turn up metal, I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who plays to Jimmy Web songs (I was working on a transient Character inspired by 'Witchita Linesman' which induces a wonderful mix of feelings, and is dark in its own way.) I was working on trying to make a campaign based on the Album, Unkown Pleasures but it had a tendance to be to close to one of those musicals like Mama Mia where they just thread loads of songs together with filler to form something like a story.
I think the soundtrack to Brazil is very good to play to but all said, I don't have special music that I play to. It will usually be something selected from what I have available on the best format available (Vynil, CD, Cassette, Radio, MP3, TV in that order).
Cassettes! some of my fondest gaming memories have a backdrop of music with a very slight repetative grind/squeak as the spools went round. No doubt due to the fact that you could pick them up for virtually free at any car boot/gagrage  or yard sale.
And you could splice them together. The 'Southern Comfort' sound track, cut with 'Paul Whitehead and his Jazz Band' and a  forgettable Cajun compliation was very well recieved for a Call of Cuthulu scenario set in a creepy old 1920's Bayou's, not least for the time and effort sticking tape together with sellotape sucessfully. Plus you could record yourself really easily; set up a mic on the PC - pah! just press the red button.
Im honestly not that old...
metal works, but for something a bit different, and also designed to be a soundtrack try amon tobin. Not all of his stuff would work, but definitely the Splinter cell: Chaos theory soundtrack or Foley Room would work perfectly, I mean he samples actual Tiger growls and chainsaws. Also in the metal vein, how about something instrumental, like Pelican or Russian Circles although not all of Russian Circles would work.
If you havent heard of any of these I recommend listening anyway.
Cassette has a certain warmth to it, and I like how it works with regard to stopping and starting and FF RW, The machine in my Dads car even has the ability to skip to the next track like on a cd). Cassettes are great because they're nowhere near as delicate as CDs and so much easier to use for home recording. I miss having a cassette machine in the car, you could keep loose cassettes all over the car in any space that provided itself, if you do that with CD they don't last long.
This has just come to me because I've got it on the Deck at the moment but the sond track to the Movie the Doors would work well for inspiration and gaming music.
Break On Through? Riders on the Storm? The End? Yeah, I could see that.
In my youth we pretty much only had cassette. I'm only 23 but until the 2000's CD was too expensive as were consumables for record players so everything was on cassette. Its deffinitly the best medium for use in the car. Road noise drowns out the wine and it doesn't get killed when you go over a pot hole.
Its a great album, I found the cassette clearing out my folks old house (They're not dead, they've just moved to the otherside of the Country).
Personally, if I want Chaos, I'm more likely to stick on an early Paradise Lost album, or some Arch Enemy. The Wages of Sin album's quite good for that sort of thing (I mean, the first track on it is even called Enemy Within, how much more appropriate can it get?)
Mechanicus schismaticals get lumped with the Doomsday Machine album instead, though.
Get Low by Lil John...on repeat. (http://open.spotify.com/track/0r2Bul2NuCViraT2zX1l5j)
heh, on a more serios note i find just generally having music i like in the background works well no matter what i do, esp when other people are around i find that they tend to set the mood more than anything. I'm fully capable of being scared out of my brain by a player who just poped out from behind a corner in a zombie game because i'm so tensed up, all the while weezer's playing in the background.
Otherwise The Battle from the gladiator sound track stikes me as being suitable for some more epic moments.
I know this thread has been dead for some time but I've only just come across it and can't help but comment. The whole Inception soundtrack is incredible background music for Inquisitor games. It creates a great atmosphere for the game especially 'Time' and 'Dream is collapsing'.
This time I do have something to add. Most of the tracks from the planets should work. Maybe except venus and mercury.
Not really music for a game but one of my dads characters "Robin Van Turie", a rogue trader with a NV value of 35 and LD of 39, recently legged it away from every opponent he came across, and several civillians. he now has his own theme music.......http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BZwuTo7zKM8........17 seconds in hahaha
