Title: 54mm Weapons
Post by: Mike Blake on September 19, 2015, 11:20:34 AM
Were do you get yours, metal or plastic, from?

Checking out the sites listed under the Resources sticky, some are dead and I imagine there are new ones which are not listed now?

A lot of the time, my 28mm bitz box. While I mentioned it being a nuisance in the other thread, GW's heroic style means that weapons and sometimes other things like hands are often so exaggerated in size as to be suitable for realistic 54mm miniatures.

The squad of "Cadians" I've put together use Lasguns from the Shock Trooper box, just with lengthened stocks (usually the ones left over after cutting away the original Lee-Enfield rifles, but sometimes plasticard instead). With the longer butt, they proportion well and measure up about 30mm long, proportionally about three feet long, a common length for a real world assault rifle.

Similarly, Sister Phoenix's Godwyn-Deaz bolter is a lightly converted Forge World Phobos pattern.

Even on heroic 54mm miniatures, 28mm rifles and heavy weapons can often be converted quite adequately into their smaller variants... or sometimes other options. I've seen bolters with their magazines and muzzle brakes cut off, which makes quite a nice stubber in the hands of a bulky 54mm miniature.

Sgt. Gillmore has a hellpistol that's a cut down lasgun, Inquisitor Skoll's (his new model, not the old one) stubber is a cut-down SMG from Heresy Minatures, and so on and so forth.

You can get particularly creative with combining parts, if you want:

This is Frost's coil-rifle*, made from variously lasgun, bolter and plasma gun pieces - although it is a little less detailed than I originally designed it (http://fav.me/d2bg0c5), which was mostly a question of whether I could make something look distinctly Imperial yet also unfamiliar.

*Hence the appearance of two magazines. It fires solid projectiles (from the rear magazine) using electromagnetic fields (powered by the lasgun cell).

And if you want weapons with the same rough proportions as those of GW's 28mm models, the Ork weapons are generally a perfect fit for 54mm stuff. I've converted some stuff, but I've also just stuck Ork weapons into 54mm hands with no problems.

Yep, basically anything that stands on a 40mm base: Nobs, Ogres, Ogryns etc
But one of my minis (the hive scum from my fig topic) has the hand of the 28mm empire general - it's a more accurately scaled figure from Andrea

Has any of you an experience with the standard 1:35 WW2 weapon sets (Italeri etc)? I never tried them fearing they're too small...
Title: Re: 54mm Weapons

I used a crew-served machine gun barrel once as a rifle-sized weapon barrel. They look like toothpicks in GW hands...
Title: Re: 54mm Weapons
Post by: MarcoSkoll on September 22, 2015, 07:01:58 PM
Yeah, as DapperAnarchist says, it really depends on what model you want to attach a 1:35 weapon to. It would probably be okay on a 1:32 scale figure, but a GW 54mm model is just too bulky.

To suit most models in the original range, I'd reckon that you'd need about 1:18 scale. Possibly some slighter models/larger weapons would get away with 1:24 scale.

I've been thinking for some time about the possibilities of sculpting a range of weapons on zbrush and selling prints of them in the Shapeways shop. Would people be interested in that? If so I'd need to see some drawings/pictures of the kind of weapons you'd like to have.

Definitely. Honestly anything would be great. Las weapons, stub weapons, even more traditional looking fire arms. Some new CCW's (chain weapons of various make) would be pretty neat as well. Anything to vary it up.

Old topic, I know, but I see no point opening a new one with the same topic.

I started some weapons in 3D and will most likely print them later this year.

First one is a Heavy Bolter.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B-rP9sFYYYKURy1oa1pFanQtRTg/view?usp=sharing

I just have a problem to make it the perfect size.

Currently it is 37mm long

Glad to see you made it here from the SG FB page.

It looks great.  37mm is a bit smaller than Artemis's boltgun... I assume you are wanting to embiggen it?

Post by: Legio Destructor on September 29, 2016, 06:52:38 AM
I have Artemis and indeed his bolter is HUGE. Putting that into a standard human hand is insanely large. But so are space marines.

I was basing the size on this. The guy has a heavy bolter. If he is 28mm tall, then his heavy bolter is around 20mm.

Resizing it to 54mm, then the heavy bolter becomes 38mm

https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B-rP9sFYYYKUaDV6YkM2MVlEWFk

Here are the custom weapons I have. The bolter is 25mm.

Glad you made it here also. Although from Ebay ;) Your weapons were great quality and I'm still trying to figure out what model I shall use them on :D

Eagerly awaiting the new additions to the range!

On a semi-related question, what sort of scales do you have to work at in 3d modelling programs to get the models/sculpts to the correct scale for 3d printing?
Does it have to be literally using mm scaling?

And do you have to split, say, a 54mm sculpt into pieces for the 3d printing to work correctly?
Title: Re: 54mm Weapons

Quote from: Legio Destructor on September 29, 2016, 06:52:38 AMI was basing the size on this. The guy has a heavy bolter. If he is 28mm tall, then his heavy bolter is around 20mm.
Most GW models are closer to 32mm overall, and Harker is supposed to be a hulking brute even by those standards.

If you're working out scaling from a picture, it's generally more accurate to use the model's base as the point of reference (as they're almost always one of a specific few sizes). He's on a 25mm base, so comparing to that, he's about 34mm tall and the heavy bolter closer to 24mm.

From there, exactly how you scale up to 54mm depends. Personally, for my sculpts, which use more realistic proportions than the exaggerated and chunky "heroic" style that GW uses, I find the similarly exaggerated 28mm weapons are actually about the right size - with little more than an extended barrel and stock every now and again.
For a bulkier GW sculpt, then you tend to need to scale up by about 75-100%, dependent on the exact weapon. (Less for pistols, more for heavy weapons).

Personally, I'd say about 45mm would be broadly right for a heavy bolter that needed to match a GW Inquisitor model.

Thantos: Thanks!! Email sent!

McJomar: I use mm as scale. single piece print for the bolter and laspistol linked above.

MarcoSkoll: thanks! The base size measuring did not occur to me. But it is the best idea.
Will rescale then! If it is too big, can reprint it later anyway.

Pistols I will scale according to the Inq models I have already.

In the meantime I did a grenade launcher, needle pistol etc.

will link the pictures this weekend.

want to do a chainsword, chainaxe, sword etc.

No worries.  I am doing a webber right now.  Will do 2-3 more,  then off to the printers.
I will be abroad for 10 days from next friday,  but when I am back,  I will continue this.  Also asked a friend who is good with greenstuff to help me out with 1-2 ideas I have...

Back from abroad...

New weapon done. Webber.

https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B-rP9sFYYYKULVp6SkJTRTFjMVk

Maybe one more, then off to print.

Pondering what to do.

Was also thinking about a mechanicus style blade.
Title: Re: 54mm Weapons
Post by: Lord Borak on November 10, 2016, 07:54:52 AM
The webber looks great. To be honest, anything to increase the range would be nice. An actual, decent looking autopistol would be great though. That or a couple of power Swords (human scale) would be nice.
Title: Re: 54mm Weapons
Post by: mcjomar on November 10, 2016, 08:39:27 AM
Autopistols-wise I've been using old 2nd ed ones occasionally, and they're in scale and gloriously goofy.

That webber looks great.
I'm interested to see how well it works with standard =][= minis, and with less heroically scaled ones as well.

If I was to request a gun, I'd probably ask for various scaled plasma weapons, for both humans, and Astartes.
I love plasma.  ;D
Title: Re: 54mm Weapons
Post by: Lord Borak on November 10, 2016, 08:57:53 AM
Actually, yeah. Some Space Marine scaled weapons would be fantastic. Something other than the Bolter/Power sword combo would be awesome. Maybe a Power Axe, Hammer and Pistols would be awesome. A great big two handed sword like the one the Emperors Champion carried would be all full of win.

Looks great :D Although shapeways "frosted" (objet 30 pro vero clear)  is a pain to make moulds from with it's frosted surface texture. Really reduces mouldlife when casting. You will want to give them a solid coat of primer before mouldmaking to help with this.

Or next time send them this way and will do some higher resolution prints for you, free if you send a few casts :D like we did with Legio Destructor's guns :)

Now this is where my inexperience with 3D printing will show, I did not make these guns, I used shapeways to find an artist who had done all the work already in 28mm and then sweet talked him into up scaling them in 54mm. Discussions are ongoing about how he wants to manage (he is doing some re-sizing so they scale even better!) these but I never expected to get the 3D models as I didn't pay him on commission to make them. I have a few future 54mm things that are on commission that I will own though.

It occurs to me that I actually have a heap of weapon meshes ripped from the various WH40K computer games. While they'd need some refinement for printing (computer game models rely more on texturing and shading than actual mesh detail), I should consider taking a look at those.

What do we need to go about doing to get hold of some of these? I'd be looking to pick up two or three sets at least, maybe putting money down for any future 54mm stuff you do. I have access to a couple of 3d printers (and the requisite nerds to operate them) if that helps?

AWESOME! I'll have to grab some of those. Maybe a couple of sets :D

You/he has done a Boltgun/Boltpistol/Laspistol set before. Any plans to re-do that?

yes, the caster has listed them on ebay while I was abroad.

If you need ebay security, you can buy them there, or drop me a message and we can do a better deal outside ebay.

My Shapeways order arrived! Thanks to gpemby for the heads up and pointing me in the right direction :)

I must admit, when I first saw them laid out on the mat I was a little skeptical - many of them looked too big to work, even at 'heroic' scale. The pump shotty in particular looked almost 20% bigger than the vanilla Inquisitor pump shotty, and I thought it might look goofy in 54mm hands.

I did some dry runs with bluetack and I think the results speak for themselves. I am overall very pleased with the entire kit! I'm looking forward to dry-fitting some test models with some of these pieces (I never had an inclination to make a graviton gun-armed model until now...). Some of them are a little chunky for my tastes, the semi-auto scoped rifle and pump shotty for example, but it just means they have to be held by chunky hands rather than dainty 'true-scale' hands.

All in all, superb. I'm looking forward to seeing a pistol pack in the future ;)

I may grab a pack so I can upgrade some 54mm halo spartans I got after seeing some security troopers...
The two I've got are currently wielding a storm bolter as a bolt pistol, and a heavy bolter as an overlarge boltgun.
It seems like the perfect excuse to give one a double barrelled shotgun, and the other a plasmagun from this set.
We'll see...

My parts arrived too! I've knocked up some scale photos of all the bits in case anyone was on the fence. Not pictured but included in the pack are a belt and box feeds for the heavy bolter, a large and small scope that fits on most of the guns, and a long suppressor that fits the semi-auto pistol very snugly.

Those are all under the category of "do want"!

E: For the halo troopers I'd mostly want the bolter, plasmagun, and bolt pistol I think.
Not sure what I'd use the rest for.
I found a set of 54mm metal gear solid V Ground Zeroes models though, but I can't really judge what will work until they turn up...

Thanks for the pix RobSkib!!!

Some would need some size tweaking for sure. As a first try they are OK. I am still learning the modelling thing. Was unsure of correct sizes.

I will dig out my space marine to see how these fit them.

I have a Space Marine kicking about somewhere too, I could get some scale shots with that if it would be helpful?

Also, I messaged the seller through eBay, but I figured I should probably say it here as well. Have you considered doing a similar but smaller weapon pack, such as with pistols and light rifles? The only thing preventing me from buying two packs at the moment is I'm not sure I'll get much use out of the special/heavy weapons in the pack, let alone two copies of them! It's no fault of your own, but I now have four 54mm scale heavy bolters ;)

I'd be very interested in a pistol/rifle/shotgun pack however, and could easily see myself buying multiple lots of those.

Robskib- if you don't want the heavy bolter and flamer from the last set of pics then I will happily take them off your hands, pm me a price? I have a need for those two guns but not the rest of the set (yet)

Absolutely delicious. Can I cheekily inquire if we'll get to see some other variants of laspistol? There's a host in Marco's expanded armoury, and some really nice designs in the Inquisitor's Handbook from the Dark Heresy 40k RPG line, such as a high-caliber desert eagle-style laspistol, or a long and elegant duelling laspistol?

100,000 % Yes! These are literally being designed to be the core 'scale' tests to get the sizes right and from these there are planned variant's that will better suit the inquisitor world!

Such as this WIP 'special forces' laspistol. More compact with built in laser sight or torch.

I have 2 laspistol variants that I will be mocking up next to go along side this one.

These models are also deliberately modular so I can add extended mags, or drum power cells or a back pack power connectors with reasonable ease. Also if there is demand for sets of spare power packs to be made then I can do that as well.

By all means put in requests, give me page numbers or source links and I will have a look at adding them to my road map. I'd rather put the effort into building things people want along side what I want. This is open to everyone/anyone for any guns.

I'd really like a paired set of scaled down bolt pistol type weapons. :D Maybe Bolt pistol looking but maybe stubbers?

The updates are looking great man. Keep up the good work!!
