Title: All my INQ54 WIP
Post by: maglash1017 on August 06, 2016, 10:10:23 PM
This is my first post on this forum, so I suppose I should introduce myself. I'm Maglash and up until around 5 years ago I was interested into a few of Games Workshop's games. I've never been a heavy collector but I do have a Warhammer Fantasy army collecting dust somewhere on a shelf. Around the time I still collected miniatures I got the Inquisitor rulebook from a friend I was immediately intrigued, but things like availabilty of miniatures held me back from starting to collect. Until now: I rediscovered the Inquisitor rulebook and decided I would get started on realizing my old dream of putting together an Inquisitor warband. The pictures below show the first miniature I ever fully sculpted: apart from some simple conversions and gap-filling all those years ago I've never undertaken something like this before (so be gentle!). It's supposed to be a bounty hunter that got tainted by Nurgle's Rot. He has a bag over his head to hide his facial disfigurements. I still have to sculpt eyes, a second foot and do some touchups.

My plan is to create a warband that is mostly sculpted from scratch, however I'll be gladly using any Inquisitor parts I can get my hands on. I'm working on a modular terrain table as well, of which I'll be posting pictures in a few days. Also I read on here that there are people making resin casts of the old Inquisitor parts; I would love to get in touch with someone that's selling these casts!

Welcome to the Forum and the Game Maglash!

That's a cool looking sculpt there mate. I love Nurgle tainted stuff! I always find it's forgiving on the conversions too! :D I especially like the tentacle arm and manky belly.

What are your plans for the rest of the band?

Great stuff.  Reminds me a bit of the Elephant Man.

That is an awesome sculpt dude! Welcome to the Conclave!

Sculpting an entire warband from scratch is an impressive goal. I look forward to hearing your future plans for the warband :).

Tut tut, no big yellow welcome?

Welcome to the Conclave!

We hope you enjoy your stay. ;)

I am very impressed that this is a) your first ever scratch sculpt and b) your first ever full-scale Inquisitor miniature! He oozes Nurgle, I think you've pulled off the concept very well. I'm not 100% sold on the rifle on his back, but I think it might just be the angle of the photo. I also like the irony in him covering his face with a sheet, despite his arm being a tentacle and the rest of him spilling out of his raggedy clothes.

I'll echo the comments about the rest of the warband though - what are your plans?

To be fair, I'm fairly new myself (in terms of regular posting anyway) so I'm not sure how to do a big yellow welcome ^^' come to think of it, I've not had my own big yellow welcome yet... :P

I do share your sentiments on the scratch-sculpt though :D

Well then

Welcome to the Conclave!

Also the sculpt rocks and I'm impressed at the quality of the rifle but like rob I agree that the position may need work

It might just be the fact that it's dark right now, but that actually slightly hurt my eyes :D.

Still much appreciated though, interesting observation - I wonder if you're the first to post a welcome that large?

Seems like my thread has derailed a bit  ::) But no worries, as  I am back with an update. The sculpting is now 95% done: the rifle was remade so all that remains is to attach it and sculpt a strap.

I've changed the name of this thread because I will be posting all of my work(s) in progress. First up are the terrain pieces I mentioned earlier. I'm in the process of building a modular terrain table with room for 20x20cm (and smaller) tiles so I can arrange the pieces in any way needed, an can include campaign-specific pieces as well.

(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/SDOQCRzppN_x7DRqX-YjHTXi2MXtlJvHCGGFq0vRWYHafDCm_Wcly7QGSG9-idb2IGQfUxjGhoIrI6oFiSOH1OwhiIZTDKcAhC4KKnXcn-snvY7O4adREFWSsUrG4NoWaSQ2HCNLjcIg5p8uCYtsBFYtcaESue8pSx0-dlpgjKUqFnfzBoPn4inIoqbBbpaZXXCYFYYtmQOAGiQ_cQU1I1bgqo_7tRUU3k6EJLH3QIZq_SzRD8NhEyiqgzToVceq5oIpWCPY5x1x_Dl_07VjbFoWKJY41gRK2fMzta2ao6fYyxKwGdZEQy4KdddehJoLTEV2ptSC3lsfNjRDCre9gN5FNeejd9OxZhxXQUxAhnFW3_q4c-LF4965Lx5mOKaeexBfGL0oQ55JE5I-f4EUKkBsdQF6tiubh9RFp64lB0uIN1ooK4LNq5uPbUNqCPnlm4xWhQd25Cfp6v2NBrPxhjUThn6enywg6pdSIvQwt12jY_cYMevcLNRt7g8YdFqpg5e8Qrj6wrFWNpxq3fJQy86WqpL7K0Irg2xnQ0VQbhoGvuHr8bDcHPyEuXgLuhkgFXi5UXM8vmjgDuJp7n2zXydxFcN8Ufo=s929-no)

First up is the piece that has the most work done on it so far: a simple building with a second floor that has an opening to the balcony, as well as a ladder that leads to an opening in the (detachable) roof. I'm hopening to magnetize the roof part. Any tips on that would be appreciated.

Next up is a sort of factory/water tower type of building. I plan on adding a ladder so it can be used as a sniper tower in-game.

And a tree: I plan on using this as the centre of the board in most games. It will have red blossom whereas the rest of the city will have a more desaturated pallette.

Following is the last building(for now): It's still missing some mechanical parts, a roof and a back wall but I'm hoping to turn it into some sort of factory with a courtyard.

Feedback and tips are appreciated!

As a bonus, here are some sketches for two more members of my warband, first up my radical Ordo Malleus Inquisitor. I want his face to look like some sort of mask or white facepaint, and try to sculpt him an ornate golden powerclaw. The other character doesn't have a background as of now, but will likely have ties to the Adeptus Mechanicus.

+1 for sly Wu Tang throwdown in the background.

Seriously though, there's a hecka lot to comment on here, and it's all awesome. The sculpt looks great and it's really taking form, what are your plans for a colour scheme?

I love the scenery, I have a big thing for 54mm scale terrain as you can get loads of incidental details in there that is much harder at smaller scales. I have no tips for magnets as I've never used them myself, but I have found that stickyback velcro circles or even a snipped-down cocktail stick with a hole to slot into has done me well in the past. I find it doesn't need to be super secure, just enough so that it won't wobble when accidentally knocked.

Finally your concept sketches are excellent - it's been a while since I've seen someone mock up sketches (inked and coloured too, no doubt!) for a character they haven't built yet, I look forward to seeing where you go with that one.

Nice to see some terrain.  I too am working on trees at the moment.  The blossom idea is great - I may have to steal that!

The texture you're adding with the strips of plasticard will really serve you well when it comes to presenting the buildings on the table.  Breaking up big flat surfaces on larger scale buildings is important I find to add realism.

That terrain looks excellent dude, and those sketches are inspiring. Hoo boy if I could learn to draw like that :D.

Sorry for my part in derailing the thread, shouldn't have done that. I find it interesting that you sculpted his gun from putty rather than using plastic tubing or something.

That terrain looks great - I really can't wait to see that tree finished. Just the way the branches are arranged gives it a really cool gothic feel, and it looks like it'll make for an atmospheric centre-piece, particularly in games set in a small hamlet or a dark and ostensibly quiet part of an imperial town...

Gah, the tree is making me want to play Bloodborne again. I suck so hard at that game.

Are you going to cover it in filler, or do you have some other means of texturing?

I'm back!
I spent the last few weeks finishing up some of the scenery, making two new buildings and I started painting a few of them. Nothing is done yet but I thought I'd post a few quick photo's here to see what you guys think.

Factory Roof + Mechanical Parts

Currently trying the hairspray and salt technique for some realistic rust weathering. As seen in the previous pictures, most of this piece is built with foamboard and cardstock. The cables were made from Milliput.

Water/sniper tower:
I added some pipes and a ladder, and started painting work. I'm currently working on some of the base colours that still need to be blocked in.

(New) Ad-mech building
HavenĀ“t posted pictures of this piece yet: It was made from old computer parts with the addition of some foamboard and cardstock. I'm thinking of maybe sculpting a servitor in the wall to act as a surgeon for a "bionics-shop" in a campaign, but It will be a lot of work that will not be seen easily so I'm not sure if it will be worth the trouble. I might even try to make it a removable (magnetised?) part so I can put the sculpt on display on its own. What do you guys think?

Next up are some sculpts that I've been working on. I haven't quite worked up the nerve (or my skills!) yet to start working on my Inquisitor so I started with this NPC, based on a John Blanche piece. Bear in mind that this is a very small miniature, about the size of a 28mm human.

(http://65.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lwfhwl6ORC1qhslato1_1280.jpg) (https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/dv0jV1w0fYvpFinoW2ZO8RHi8HTNkscNv9XSLkgEsWfuM804gUcoU085zvS6mQranVKxFvVwSw=w500-h631-no) (https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/9hm6ShXTDs9VoedGF6MsWDGJ6MUQ9rPWnIJCLQSKanwoC0KgPyTFz5vBaqD2Y-GV2jTmRaIXNA=w473-h631-no)

Next up a new member of the warband, a servitor constructed to carry tomes of knowledge. While I was sculpting the character started forming in my head: the idea I'm toying with is that he was servitorised thousands of years ago and that he has been blessed by Nurgle so that he cannot die: he knows and remembers infinitely more than anyone else, but since he cannot speak he can't share it with anyone. He kind of made me think of Giurescu's father in one of the Hellboy comics.

I'd like to get your guys' opinion on this and if there are any problems fluff-wise: I'm not the biggest expert on the 40k setting. One problem of course is the fact that if he is a servitor, to my knowledge he wouldn't really "think" or "feel": are there instances in which characters are made into robotic servants without being servitorised?

The sculpting on this guy is coming along pretty quick, the bulk of this work was done in one day, mostly because the armature was very simple and some parts could be glued together.

Are you going to cover it in filler, or do you have some other means of texturing?

Probably filler, was thinking of maybe using paper-mache but I doubt I'll be able to press details into it.

Great stuff.  Reminds me a bit of the Elephant Man.

That just gave me an idea for an NPC...  ;)

He could be ported right into Inquisitor!

Wow.  It all looks great.  Where to start...?

The building looks fantastically built and the weathering is brilliant.  I can't help but see grimdark Thomas the Tank Engine in that second picture.  I hope he's about to derail the Troublesome Trucks for Tech Heresy.

If you have the skills to magnetise a servitor for the bionics clinic, then absolutely go for it.  It could be a great character, with many more uses later.

The twisted sculpts are great.  Rather than servitorisation, some sore of lobotomy (perhaps a failed bionic upgrade) could have rendered the character mute/an idiot savant.  It's not uncommon for people to get practically everything upgraded with bionics (the Augmeticist character background from Rogue Trader springs to mind), so some characters would appear robotic while retaining something of their original personality.  Also could go far to explain the longevity without the Nurgle corruption if you wanted.

Small update. I've been experimenting with mixing FIMO clay in with my green stuff and milliput. In the end I used just Milliput yellow/grey and FIMO and the end result, which somehow comes out almost as green as green stuff, works very well. It keeps some of the advantages of milliput but it stops being too crumbly. When dried it keeps some flexibility as well.

Comments and critique welcome as always!

I like seeing the design come to life.
I'd suggest grabbing some plastic bionic bits/scopes/etc from your 40k bits box, and using those for the eyes. Or for anything else, really.
Kitbash as much as possible.

I think you need to lengthen the torso somewhat though - maybe by a few millimetres, nothing major.
Perhaps so that the base of his spine is in line with where the pipe on the second picture connects to the bottom of the book.
That would put his hips in the right place.
The leg pose is pretty good, gets the right feel across.
I assume he lacks/is going to lack arms and is bolted into carrying the book?

I finally ordered some paints (Vallejo Game Color, already like them a lot) and went to work on my first sculpt. I was a little anxious as to how it would turn out, as I haven't painted a miniature in years, but I read an [EXCOMMUNICATE] load of tutorials when not working on the sculpts and was hoping to try some new techniques! I'm really happy with the way the skin turned out. I used a lot of glazing to get the blend from skin colour to green right. I Still have to paint his clothes and some of the leather straps. I'd love to get some critiques and tips on things I could improve!

I also painted the servitor, both the sculpting and the painting are little quick and dirty, but I have decided to make him part of one of my terrain pieces. I tried out some more "painterly" techniques as well as a lot of washes. I'm very happy with the dirty and scary vibe of this model. (Sorry for the  grainy pictures, the phone I take pictures with recently died  :'( )

I'm viewing via mobile right now but i can't see the older images either. I'm using firefox mobile though.

I like the work on those miniatures. I've been delving into vallejo game colour and i like what I've used so far. Need to get a proper set though.

I'm guessing you could accuse the servitor of possibly being a mad ex priest with electro whips?
All in all some great work!

Heya all, it's been pretty long without an update. I've been working on some new sculpting work, as well as my terrain, to which some pretty big structural changes have been made. I want to have some more work done on that untill I show the progress though.

First off is some sort of hive ganger who's background is yet to be written. He's probably destined to be an NPC.

Obvious additions to be made are hands and a head. I'm thinking of using the drawing by an artist called "rags23" on Instagam as an inspiration for the "face". Also the whole sculpt will be tilted forward a little when it's put on its base which will improve the pose a little, like in the (slightly rotated) 2nd picture.

Something else I have been working on is a small sculpt based on a John Blanche drawing. The face still needs to be redone.

I'm making slow progress but having a lot of fun with scratch sculpting and I feel like I'm really getting the hang of it now. Please let me know what you think!

Good to have you back!! Great look conversion work so far!! You really do capture the Grim-Dark.

I love your work and I'm stoked you're back and posting new content. I'm very interested to see how you do this new guy's head, it looks like quite a complicated build. Quick side note though, the forum seems to be having some problems interpreting some of your image links - they're just appearing as grey No Entry signs. Could you double check those? It's a shame to have all your hard work go unseen!
