Title: Papah Minis Tau painted.
Post by: mcjomar on January 14, 2017, 10:18:55 PM
Like it says on the tin.
I painted him 3rd edition style using the guide in the 3rd edition tau codex.
I did give him a wash with devlan mud though.

That looks great.

I didn't much care for that color scheme on the Tau minis back when they came out.  Not that It's grown on me but I think it looks much better on the larger scale model.   That's a nice gritty combat on some harsh crappy world for the greater good, look going on there.

I've some of these Tau myself but have yet to paint them.  I really hadn't thought about using that scheme on them though but after seeing it large scale I may just go that way myself.

off topic, I wonder how hard it would be to mod those figures to get one kneeling.

Aren't they all standing?
If so you'd have to hack the body in half, and then cut the crotch apart at angles, hack the legs around the knees/kneepads, and cut off the feet, and rebuild from there sparingly I guess?
Gav's instruction are pretty helpful on this stuff - I used them for my marine.

Looking good as always. I have one of these models in 'The Box' as well. Haven't brought myself to paint it yet. Maybe when I get a spare Ethereal I'll buy another one and paint up my spare Kroot for an Alien warband. Maybe with the Alien Bounty HUnter thrown in there as well...........

Dammit. Now I'm planning another warband  :(

Oh, the leather work is great mate. Is that dry brush, highlighting or washes?

For the satchel? Just a devlan mud wash over snakebite leather.
For the undercloth? I followed the 3rd edition tau codex guide, with a twist.

Base coat is scorched brown and chaos black 50/50. The go over with pure scorched brown. It stopped there, so I elected to highlight with the next brown up, which for me is bestial brown. Then it got a wash of devlan mud.
I guess I'm slowly getting the hang of this edge highlighting thing?

The clothes I meant. They look great. Your painting is definitely improving.

Looking good mate. Those models are certainly awesome. I have one but I think I may pick up another few for a Tau themed warband :D The new pictures certainly make the paint job look better.

Very nicely painted.  You've captured the original Tau colour scheme really well.  I feel like a couple of more details on the base would help round things off though.  A couple of mechanical parts, or a bit of cabling.

I'm looking at this and I think I need to fix the helmet with another wash, and the shoulder pad by reducing the thickness of my highlighting.
Edge highlighting is an extreme weakness in my skillset.
