Title: Rebuilding a collection
Post by: goodshipalbion on January 20, 2017, 09:32:04 PM
Sadly gave away my inquisitor collection a couple of years after launch but have decided to collect again and will be docenting my progress here.

First up is a lovely resin cast I got on eBay with the addition of a sanguinary guard sword, some SM pouches / seals / grenades:

That looks awesome!! The conversion I mean. The 'en garde' pose really works on the model. Although part of me thinks he's telling someone off for trying to touch his plasma pistol :D

Really pleased with how the pose came out, was going to have him testing on the sword like the cane that the model comes with...But it looked too nice to pass up :)

I love that model. Gives me some inspiration for my next character.

Can't wait to see it painted.

I've been tempted to use that model to represent a Knight pilot.
Maybe.
Nice work.

Very cool coversion!

Never thought of using SG weapons, which is silly because I have plenty of them and they're easily large enough for ][ - great idea! :)

Good luck rebuilding your collection!

It's a resin cast job off eBay "54mm Imperial noble"

To be a little more precise, it was Lord Borak who sculpted and cast these: http://www.the-conclave.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=2538.msg36113#msg36113

Sigh. I really *should* find the time to work on the Warhound and her crew again.

I had no idea Borak scratch-sculpted this! I ordered one today :D.

Thanks for your purchase!  ;D

.... and yes. I am to blame for this model ;) Well, kinda, Alyster Wick commissioned me to do something based on art work.

@Goodshipalbion: What colour scheme were you thinking of doing? (I am yet to paint one :S)

Thinking dark blue uniform as don't want him to look too much like a commissar but more like an old navy boy

lovely pose, looks very stern.

as for colour scheme, id base the imperial navy on a blue tunic, cream trousers look:

I just realised this, but its weird how well 28mm grenades scale with 54mm minis. I guess it's because the 28mm hands are heroic scale and thus larger in proportion?
Title: Re: Rebuilding a collection
Post by: MarcoSkoll on January 27, 2017, 12:38:19 AM
It's actually true of lots of GW's 28mm weapons on non-heroic 54mm scale models. My 54mm sculpts use more delicate and realistic proportions than GW's own range (with many of my models based on the more realistic style used in GW's art) and many of them use 28mm weapons - albeit sometimes modified with slightly larger grips or stocks, or perhaps spliced together from two weapons.

I have sometimes scratch built weapons such as when I did the Mordant "Acid Dog" (whose Triplex lasgun is fairly large in the art), but I do find myself doing that less than just heading to my bits box.

I'll try and get some more pics up soon as the collection is growing coming soon :
Arco flagerant
Chrono gladiator
Genestealer
3x elite naval troops
4x ice world guard
Hospitaller
Catachan
Gunslingers
Commissar
Mutant
And maybe an inquisitor or two :)

Polar guardsman by tehnolog, was going to convert these a bit but tbh they are pretty much perfect as is although might press mold some Aquila's etc for them at some point:

The new genestealer patriarch with a bit of reposing and removal of spines / spikes makes a good 54mm genestealer:

Some very cool stuff mate. The Technolog models are quite nice. I had originally ignored them because of the quality but the Pirate is actually quite nice. Where is the pistol from on the Inquisitor.

The buzz saw off the Arco-flag. Where is that from?

Thanks very much the tehnolog stuff is pretty good for soft plastic and can't find 54mm stuff any cheaper really

The pistol is a cut down plastic space marine scout sniper rifle.

So the buzz saw is from robogear kits ....For those not in the know robogear was airfix attempt into the sci-fi wargame market there's a range of vehicles / mechanical available along with scenery...It's all produced by tehnolog too :)

As for buying the tehnolog figures....Do it via eBay seller "chief_fly" as he combines postage so if buying multiple sets the savings stack up :)

Grabbed the new triumvirate of the imperium set and built Belisarius cawl as a tech priest (holding back many bits for use on future magi / servitors):

Could you get a photo of him next something for scale. I'm curious about picking that one up myself.

Awesome, show some comparison picks with Inquisitor models if you would. It will be great to see how they compare size-wise.
Title: Re: Rebuilding a collection
Post by: MarcoSkoll on February 14, 2017, 02:49:03 PM
I've a feeling that the Avatar of Ynnead is a bit big for 28mm and a bit small for 54mm -  but hey, if anyone wants just that model, I'd contently split the box with them, as I'd actually quite like the other two characters in the kit for my 28mm collection*.

(Buying a box from a third-party retailer and splitting it is probably cheaper than trying to scrounge just the one model from an eBay middle-man).

* As I may admit more fully at some point, I have actually bought a few things from GW again, as they've been behaving much more like a reasonable company recently, and I really wanted some of the stuff they had on Made to Order.

I've ordered a box, I'd recommend getting one and ebaying what you don't keep.  I did that with the triumvirate of the imperium and ended up only spending like 8 quid for Belisarius.

Also have to agree after selling all my GW. Stuff 2 years ago they have become a pretty decent firm again so will buy bits and bobs

The Avatar scales up really well. I'm impressed. It's as if GW was thinking of us secretly when they made him/her/it.

Liking the conversions so far. Bars head really works on the Daemonhuntress body. I'd not considered doing that, nor have I ever seen that conversion either.

Looking good mate :)

Quick question - I picked up some Tehnolog minis based on your recommendation, but I have to admit I'm finding the soft plastic a little tricky to work with. Do you have any little secrets like ideal tools or anything to suggest when working with the material (I ask because your own minis seem to be turning out so well ^^).

Aye it's tricky stuff but behaves slot like resin plastic (restic) so main things that help are use a sharp strong blade like a snap off or true Stanley knife and slice off mold lines or detail....No scraping as it roughs up and causes burr.  Off you do end up with some fuzzy bits then a brass wire brush is good for getting them off.  Other than that you'll have to pin most plastic or metal bits on as difficult to get a perfectly flat mating surface.  I'd also recommend a good super glue or at least one that's freshly opened (cheap 8 packs of small tubes from poundland are good for this)

Thanks dude, I've been experiencing a lot of this 'burr' by trying to get rid of the mould lines... so you mean turn the blade on it's side and literally cut the lines away?

Exactly, sharp blade and steady hand and slide the blade along with a slight slicing action

Hopefully have some more pics up this weekend not been much progress lately due to the poor sleeping habits of my young daughter.  I've managed to undercoat and shade the bulk of the minis so might even get some paint on soon :)

I've been working on some adeptus scions using guard legs and tehnolog Scythian bodies bit of putty work to do but should have a pic soon.

Also received the new plastic guilliman and can comfirm he is far too small to use as a 54mm space marine but is useful for human scale power armour so as some Tyrus parts turned up the next day I'm kit bashing them to produce a PA inquisitor and a PA bounty hunter type.

Also on the table ATM are some tehnolog elves getting the eldar treatment, tehnolog cyborgs and skeletons getting a necron restyle and more of the plastic astronauts becoming genestealer cultists.

Day off on Friday so hopefully get some finished and get some photos taken
