Title: New Terrain Project from an indecisive Neophyte
Post by: maglash1017 on April 08, 2018, 01:25:36 PM
Hello again to you all. Last year, i started working on some sculpts as well as a modular terrain table that could fit different tiles, but when the work was 50% done I abandoned the project, mainly because I started to find detail and cohesiveness more important than diversity, and also because the project was not grandiose enough for my tastes. So I started work on an entirely new terrain project, a hive city table in which I would try to include buildings with lots of floors, to create the possibility of vertical movement in a game of Inquisitor (even though I don't have anyone to play against right now*). I was heavily inspired by the gothic style and eclectic look of Kris Kuksi's art:

I meant to include as much detail as possible in the form of baroque decorations with an underlying look of old, rusty tech.
So I got to breaking out the foamboard, cardboard and glue again, as well as collecting a lot of skeleton toys, anotomical models and the like as this was one of the elements that intrigued me about Kuksi's art. I purposely did not build any plans as I wanted the board to have a natural, slapped together feel, like the slum-like environment that a hive city is. One detail I particulary liked was the big skeleton that was part of a concrete support beam.
* I live close to Amsterdam. Anyone in the area, or even the country on here?

I was excited about how the progress was coming along, but after a month-long stretch of not working on the board, I took a fresh look at the project...
...and I wasn't happy with it. It was not cohesive and detailed enough for my taste. I know, at a certain moment you're just supposed to work with the choices you made and try to finish the project, but I feel like my indecisiveness is going to make for a better board in the end (also, this is my project and I can do as I damn well please ;D ).

I decided I would keep the main idea of the river filled with industral waste in the middle, but remove the buildings and start over, this time using some different and new techniques and designing more of the board beforehand, with reusing some of the elements in mind (particularly the skeleton-support-beam-thingy).

A new technique I wanted to try was making some building blocks (not unlike GW's 28mm terrain kits) out of plasticard and green stuff, and casting them in resin, as this should enable me to build more complex and detailed buildings in less time; so that's what I've been working on for the last 2 months. Progress is slow, but I'm loving the amount of detail I can put in these pieces and I feel like they will enable me to do a lot of different things in the future, as they are very versatile. Up until now I have worked on a couple of wall pieces with windows and doors, as well as some walkways, panels and gothic/technological looking details, and today i started testing the process of making a mold out of silicone caulk.

nice stuff, looks like those towers were a pretty hefty piece of scenery, a show-stopped I'm sure, but hard to re-use perhaps? Maybe you can rescue them by cutting it into something more modular? The skeleton is great.

The skeleton is an awesome touch.

I'm always amazed by the incredible terrain I see on here. Whenever I attempt terrain it tends to fall apart before I can finish ^^'

i agree with the others. Your plasticard blocks are fantastic, especially the tallest sci-fi one with the sloped panels.

your hive city table is also amazing. It is very blanche-esque, but also reminds me of something i would expect to see from the old ad&d planescape setting

Is there an update or do you have finished pictures?

My first terrain will mostly include Necromunda buildings (the old set), which are just big enough... of course I can always double all walls to make them into a more hall-like feeling.

I am also considering adding and converting Siku 1:32 models - for a more street-scene feeling.

This project kind of fell by the wayside, I do plan on finishing it someday but it'll have to wait. I still have the plasticard blocks, haven't casted them up though.
