Title: Inquisitor Xerxas and Warband revamp
Post by: RobSkib on November 10, 2009, 10:57:57 PM
Okay, so I've had this model lying around on my desk half finished for weeks now, which isn't in itself unusual if I know what has to be done, but in this case I'd just been utterly stumped as to what the model was going to become. At first I thought wandering missionary/priest, something akin to Adam Cunis' Davos Adscrati (http://kaled100.atspace.com/index4.htm). Sans head and GS work, I eventually decided that he was going to become the next incarnation of my own personal Inquisitor, Amadeus Xerxas (http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e58/RobSkib/Inquisitor/warband.jpg). He is literally the bounty hunter model with an extended hat, Dark Elf halberd and Tau pulse carbine bits added.

Armed a bit more humbly to represent his rough and ready appearance, I wanted my Inquisitor to be synonymous with everything I love about 40k and what better than the iconic bolter and chainsword. There is still loads of GS-work to do; a sash around his waist to cover the belt and the mess underneath it, a continuation of Eisenhorn's chest strap to sling the bolter onto (currently blu-tacked in the rough place where it will hang on the model), resculpting the mess I made of Eisenhorn's shoulder as I hacked it apart to get jackson's arm to fit to name the biggest!

Comments and criticisms most welcome as always.

very dynamic pose there! like the protective curl of the arm around the book. where is the bolt gun from? could we get a close up? the GS looks very crisp... going to be watching this one!

very cool. nice to see a model making use of the 40k metal banner. had the same idea for my marine wip. looking 4ward to seeing him finished

Interesting to see another sgt stones/ esienhorn hybrid. Looks great and looks very different to both mine and kaleds, love the arm curled around the book.

I too would like to see the bolter close up. unsure of the stock right now.

Thanks for the comments all.

As it turns out, I posted the same picture twice rather than a shot of the bolter. It's the bolter that came with the bolt weapon booster pack but with the mag removed and stuck onto the side to make it a little more exotic.

YES! thats the one I thought it was take that Salarath (he was here and disputed my obvious correctness...)

really nice gun. the strap shouldnt be too hard for you to extend either!

Great poise.  Very debonnaire.

Curvy chainsword?

Post by: Inquisitor Cade on November 11, 2009, 04:02:30 PM
The chaisword is from the old chainsword booster.

I agree with the above: Great pose, great bolter and, nice work with the legs.

I'm not convinced by the tank sprue backpacks though, esspecially not with the lasgun/pistol.

I was probably going to GS the stock on the pistol to make it a tad bigger.

Funnily enough, Adlan and I were discussing how effective the combination of Stone's legs and Eisenhorn's torso is.  This is another example of how it can produce dramatically different miniatures with just a little reposing and new set of arms and head.

A really good-looking mini, there, Rob.  And with your painting skills I know he's going to look awesome when done.

Very interesting model there Rob. You certainly made a great use of different bits (I would never have thought of using that left arm like that.)

What is the right arm? A guardsman's arm with the lasgun cut off?

I assume it's for left hand use I'd imagine the it would be uncomfortable to use right handed

Very groovy model I really must get back into modelling.

Quote from: kierkegaard on November 12, 2009, 04:06:43 PMWhat is the right arm? A guardsman's arm with the lasgun cut off?

I think it's jackson's right arm (armed with laspistol) with the shoulder hacked apart an the hand removed.

Quick update!

I've GS'd in a neckscarf (not really that visible in these pictures, but there nonetheless) and given him a sash around his waist to hide the horrible mess at the top of his leg armour. The right hand side is a bit naff, I might pull it off and do it again.

In other news, I've also started the Heavy to give his warband a bit of punch:

He is in no small way finished, this is the basic armature. There is going to be lots of GS work on his chest, shoulders and arms to beef him up a bit. The right arm is at a funny angle because I'm going to add more muscle at the back, he's far too weedy at the moment to be able to carry that heavy bolter on his own! He is, in some small way, based on this lovely model:

This looks like a lovely start to a piece - it's wonderfully dynamic, and I love the weapon selection. I have one of those chainswords sitting in my bitz box, awaiting the "right" model. I think it's a lovely weapon - very regal. Add to that your unique take on the boltgun, and I think there's something good happening here. Best of luck with the painting!

He looks good, but isn't the banner facing the wrong way?  The vertical pole should surely be on the back of the pennant, no?

Also, I think that even bulking up the mean-looking dude won't quite make that particular heavy bolter a believable weapon for him.  It's friggin' huge! I think either a bi-pod or some suspensors would be a good addition.
Title: Re: Inquisitor Xerxas v2.0 WIP
Post by: RobSkib on November 13, 2009, 07:00:38 PM
I know it looks a bit hefty, but I havn't even got near to having him finished :P I have a trusty plastic IG bipod from the heavy weapons team sprue just in case my GS work goes tits-up, but I want to at least try and make him look butch enough to lug that huge thing around on his own.
Title: Re: Inquisitor Xerxas v2.0 WIP
Post by: precinctomega on November 13, 2009, 08:13:27 PM
I rather liked the way the banner was on backwards.  First, it meant that it didn't look odd because it lacked the natural "flop" forwards.  Second, it gives it a bit more of a distinctive, characteristic feel, rather than looking like everyone else.

There aren't enough back-banners in INQ, IMO.

I saw that too but thought that it actual works both ways... the shape of the banner is more suited to facing the way it is.

Do you remember how the heavy machine guns were suported in alien?
They had a belt with a mechanical arm that took all the weight and balanced the weapon so they didnt break their back whilst running about.

Post by: Simeon Blackstar on November 16, 2009, 12:04:15 AM
I think it's in about the same scale as Sgt Harker's heavy bolter.  Jaxon's a bit small to be doing that though - Harker's a proper giant.  You might be better off just sculpting the chest from scratch if you're going to add musculature anyway and saving the torso for another model, but you might be able to make the legs big enough by extending between the knee and the top of the boot by a few mm, and perhaps at the thigh too.  There was a tutorial for it in the Exterminatus magazine with the Pathfinder (and Kal/'Krash').

On the upside, you've made me finally decide to do something about the heavy bolter sitting sadly in my own collection!  ;D

Hmm.  I didn't notice anything wrong with the back banner.

The heavy bolter does look a little too large at the moment, but not insurmountably so, with a bit of work.

I love the Inquisitor! Great pose, great sense of motion, and the sculpting/modelling work on him is great so far!

However, I'm not too sure about the heavy bolter at the moment. It still looks incredibly big for the model, and his pose doesn't really convey the sense of weight that I think it should.

Thanks for all the comments, the Heavy Bolter guy has taken a bit of a back bench for the time being, I've finally got to a stage with Xerxas that I feel pleased to call finished! All he needs is a lick of paint - so please, if you see anything glaringly obvious, point it out!

Since last update, most effort has gone onto the backpack - there were concerns that the lasgun was out of proportion, so I up-sized the grip and added a powerpack and barrel from a 54mm lasgun, added slices of rubber band for a holster and stuck more gubbinz on around it.

The extended strap around his body that holds up his bolter came out a bit naff, but I don't want to replace it. What do you think?

That looks Fantastic, Just like an Inquisitor on the Move should. Gun at his side, Chainsword in hand, tome of forbidden law in his grasp.

Bag with all his clobber, looks very nice as well.

Yeah, the bolter looks great from these angles, though from a practical point of veiw I'd suggest it should meet the bolter at both ends and run the length of it if that is possible (it certainly wouldn't be for me). As it is he wouldn't be able to move without it swinging all over the place.

I like what you.ve done with the backpack.

Update!

As you can see, I've made a start on Xerxas - picking the colour scheme was actually the hardest thing to do on him! I really really liked Saussure's Inquisitor Carter (http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b170/Saussure/InquisitorCarter004.jpg) so I began to shamelessly riff on his colour scheme, starting with the burnished metal for the weapons and shoulderpads. However, as the day wore on, I chanced upon some more images of Inquisitors and settled on the green/grey/brown colour scheme that he's sporting at the moment. I quite like the earthy, natural tones - for some reason, Ordo Xenos strikes me as being green - and he still has a bit of elitist flair with the gold and red trim on his cape :)

Problem is though, I can't decide what to do on his back banner - I've never painted banners before (which is why I have so many spare in my bits box!) and my freehand leaves much to be desired, so I ask the Conclave for help! What on earth should he have proudly flapping around behind his head as he hacks people apart with his chainsword?

Speaking of which, I have one final competition for an internet cookie. I've writted 'FUCHELLIOS' on his chainsword, can anybody guess the reference?

Comments and criticisms are, as usual, very very welcome!

*EDIT*Oh yes, and in case you hadn't noticed, I left his bolter off whilst I painted the cloak. The bolter is painted the same way as the chainsword, with a nice lacquered wooden stock, I just havn't glued it on yet!

Easily one of my favourite ever Inquisitor models. Fantastic work, and I really like the earthy tones you picked. Given the overloaded backpack and the book he's carrying (which give the air of a journeyman Inquisitor, never settling in one place long) I wonder whether his face could've done with some slight stubble.

Still, an amazing model and one I'm definitely saving for future inspiration!

I thought about doing that actually, but I prefer the look of him clean shaven! I don't know if you can see it in the photographs, but the hair on the back of his head is all stubble from where he hasn't managed to keep his dashing bowl-cut in pristine condition! :P

Simply excellent.  Not as debonair as he started out - he's gained quite a bit of weight, but the result is a really gritty model with more genuine prescence.

I've almost finished his paintjob, but the backbanner is still mystifying me. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

In other news, if you follow the fabulous Chronicles of the Carthaxian Conclave (http://www.the-conclave.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=352.0) started by Kaled and have read my latest post, I can show you some sneaky WIPs of Takoda Tedd:

I didn't have an auto shotty handy to stick on the model, so I had to bodge one from a standard INQ shotgun. I just shortened both barrels, clipped the stock off and added a nice IG mortar magazine. Looks dandy enought o pass as an auto shotgun methinks, there's life in those old gun models yet!

I have a lot of GS work to do. I'm trying to achieve a certain dashing hat and snakeskin jacket (http://assets.nydailynews.com/img/2009/10/05/alg_zombieland_jesse-eisenberg_woody-harrelson.jpg) look...

Whoah! Sometimes I even surprise myself at how productive I can be. After some intense industrial-strength worksessions over the past 48 hours, I've produced a very-nearly finished Francis "Takoda" Tedd; an entrepreneur of murder and cousin, "Business is good."

I just have a few more things to do to him - he needs a lapel on the right side of his jacket, maybe some beltloops and buckles if I'm feeling adventurous. Would it be too cheeky to say that he's an ex-member of an Ordo Sepulturum kill-team? :P

i have to say i'm very annoyed at you.

I have a Dark Heresy Character that i have recently converted into 54mm form. nedless to say, he had a statson hat, and carried two stub autos. and a sawn off break open shotgun on his back. My model was using Slicks legs and body, and a head and weaposn swap, but i'm now gonna have to alter it, as this is so much better! this is what my character should have looked like!

Very jeleous.

I'm puzzling over what the red straps are made from, royal mail rubber bands by any chance?  ::) going to have to be a bugger and remind you that rubber petrifys over time so you might find these cracking quite heavily.  :(

Great work on that guy.

As an alternative to rubber bands for straps/belts, try cutting strips from all the sheets of transfers that come with GW kits.  It's a decent thickness, glues on almost immediately with superglue, can be cut to whatever dimensions are required and, most importantly, everybody has stacks of sheets of the stuff lying around unused.  ;)
