Ok so its been awhile since i challenged myself with a good bit of modeling, and i decided to kick it up a gear with a Space Marine conversion. I always enjoy a challenging model so i'm looking forward to the hard work.
This model is not for game play, and apart from the name i havent really worked up a back story. I plan to work from this sketch by Jes Goodwin of the MK 8 Errant design. And the marines Chapter is going to be Blood Ravens, Normaly i paint Salamanders however i wanted to branch out and after painting a few test 40k models to get the paint right i know the Blood Ravens is the right scheme for me.

My thanks to Ancelyn for giving me his unused SM helmet for this project. And seeing as both Artemis and the helmet arrived yesterday i've spent my day off work getting stuck into the helmet and chest.
Helmet as it arrived,

Helmet now,
(http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h96/aclark75/Arthas/SDC10809.jpg)
still needs a bit of work before it looks like the Mk 8's redesigned helmet but i'm hopeful. I also started on one of the more challenging parts of making Artemis stand up straight, resulpting his abdomen so its nice and straight, not to mention the armour'd covering of the cableing. I chose to cut away the entire abdomen and rebuild from scratch as i want him to look as natural as possible.

You can see i've removed the collar decoration and plan to file out the semi circle out of the collar. I've also removed the skull decoration and replaced it with a gem style chest peice. I've also cleaned up the armour beneth the chest.
The groin and belt are next on the list, converting the belt so it sits evenly on the hips and is segmented is not really a hard job but my craft knife broke today so i've had to wait before cutting out the plasticard i need to do this. And as my fingers are now sore from holding various parts whilst i saw, i'm gonna pop to the shops tomorrow and buy a new one. I'm hopeing to finish the abdomen and belt tomorrow or over the weekend (depending on Work). I'll try to finish the Helmet tonight so i have somthing to show.
A very promising start. It is certainly an ambitious project,
Looking good so far! Keep up the momentum though, don't get disheartened - I imagine there's a crazy amount of filing and snipping involved.
No photo's this update they'll be coming up on Monday.
Began working on the legs today, have sawed, filed, drilled and pined to my hearts content, and finally have worked the legs into a comfortable replica of the sketch. GS happens tomorrow to resculpt the joints and with a finished belt the groin and chest can be joined then mounted on the legs. Once thats done all i'll have left to work out is just how i want the arms. Like i said photo's will be up by monday afternoon.
Looks great so far. I am in the process of converting an Artemis too, so I know how much hard work it is! Ill be watching this with interest, may be able to steal a few ideas ;)
I'll keep an eye out for a WIP of your artemis model then ;D
If you do see me doing somthing good please let me know, i can never tell if i'm actually doing somthing right or not lol
Ok, so i have to pull 2 shifts 2day and i'm between them now, i figgured i'd get some work done on Arthas. After all what else do we do in our spare time lol
Assembled the legs today, i think i've managed to get a fairly natural pose going on. Still needs GS and i'd prefer to do that when i havent had only 3 hours sleep. Maybe tomorrow. If i get the time then tomorrow looks to be a big day, the chest will be mounted onto the legs and the abdomen sculpted in, the legs will be GS'd and my belt will have to get finished to. In short, the next session will hopefully see the main bulk of the model finished leaving only the arms, and details left to go. Wish me luck.

I know the left leg looks a bit odd but trust me its fine, once its GS'd it should look normal again. Also, taken purely coz i wanted to see how it would sit (going to be lengthening his abdomen for a more natual look) A photo or 2 of the torso and head on the legs.

Is this one of those Marines who can't remember his left and right, so they've painted it on his kneepads? ;D
(Nah, I know why you've done it.)
Word of warning, he'll probably look off balance like that. In a static and straight standing pose, the pelvis sits over the middle of the feet, not the ankles, so he already looks a bit funny. Add in his backpack, and he'll likely look like he's in the middle of toppling over. You probably need to bend him forward slightly around the ankles.
Wow! Very nice work. So Alex, are you going to use brass rod to attach the torso to the legs? It will offer a more stable platform. Also, I assume you are going to file off the seam lines? An impressive start.
Edit: I would also agree with Marco on his positioning.
Ok boys made a few minor tweaks to his stance today. Thanks for the advice :)
A very good start, looking forward to seeing how this goes. Clean and well thought out construction, keep up the good work! :)
Right did some GSing this morningafter work, gonna sleep and finish the legs today. Just a bit more on joints and some more detail. Then i'll move onto the chest. I've pinned it in place (sort of, lose pinning so i can adjust if i need to) so one i've got it exactly right i can just GS around the pin until i have the solid part of the abdomen done, minus a layer for detail. Then i'll have to sculpt the pipe guard. Anyway, Pics so enjoy!

Cool GS work. The skull is very good. Did you use a homemade mould or just sculpt it freehand?
Freehand. Dont know how to do moulds lol but i'm fairly skilled when i set my mind to it so its never been much of a problem.
OK! Photo's are coming, as soon as i get new batteries. BUT as an update this one is fairly big. He's assembled. fully. I'm still playing with the backpack mind. I've built a new right arm for his pose and finished the GS sculpting. I'll be interested to get input once the photo's are up 2morro.
ANNNNNNNNNNNNNND finished building. Well some rough edges to smooth out but hes basically finished. Enjoy the pics, and i welcome any feedback.

Stunning! and as you can see, green with envy :P can't wait to see it painted. Far better than the original artemis model.
Rob
Wow, that is mightily impressive! I can tell a LOT of work has gone into that, good job!
If I may add a bit of constructive feedback - it looks like his right hand is slightly separated from his wrist, is that an issue that would be easy to fix?
Haha! the wrist had been on my to do list so long i forgot about it. Done it now, a quick file and repin no harm done :) I'm glad you guys like it. I promised the boys down my local GW that i'd take him in b4 painting so they could have a look, so painting wont start till late tomorrow but should be mostly done by the end of next week. I'm gonna take my time on the painting, i'd hate to ruin a beautiful model with a sub standard paint job.
EDIT: I should point out he does have an icon around his neck, i've just forgotten to glue it on yet lol
Very nice work. The stance is very realistic and the gs work youve done really echoes the streamlined style of your sketch, mission successful I'd say.
Is he a Blood Angel? Apologies if you've already said. I'm working on a mk6 Corvus pattern Marine Malevolent atm, I'll have pics up soon. We'll be able to do a 'Power Armor throughout the Ages' gallery :)
Btw was on here before as Ros Erevan, so no welcome necessary. Been lurking on and off for a while, but I actually found the time to get back into =][=! Good times. And this bad-ass Ferrari of a marine is one of the many reasons I love this game.
Wow, love the model, must have taken you so long to get it to this point.
Looking forwards to seeing it painted.
James
The left arm is shorter than the right one, it seems to be sitting a little bit high and the torso is offset to the right by a fair margin as well.
jebus, make me one.
That is one awesome Space Marine, I'm really digging the pose!
Having spent a while in front of the mirror and imitating the pose of the marine, I think the model is spot on. IF you hold your right arm straight with a weight on the end, but actively pull up a weight in your right arm, the muscles above your clavicle have a perceptible bulge tot hem and make the shoulder look raised.
Given this and that the left arm is also bent slightly at the elbow, both the arm length difference and shoulder height difference are as it would be in normal life.
I do however agree now from this careful examination that the torso could do with separation and shifting to the left.
Rob
Ok so i'll be honest, i unpinned the arms an played with them, but i was happier with it as was so i'm gonna re do it after painting, Also i agree the torso is slightly off. But it would mean a major rebuild to do that again so i'll be honest and say im not gonna do it, its a nice model and it honestly wont bother me if its slightly of. The Back pack was only blue tacked on as i find this gives me better acsses when painting. I'll have to go to GW and get more GS for when i repin the arms, but thats touch up work and not a worry for me. Anyway was able to get some painting done, not all but a fair amount. Enjoy.

If im honest with myself i'm not 100% happy with that shoulderpad and MAY end up painting over and starting again, but thats life lol. Highlighting and the sword arm still needs doing and im gonna do a bit more with the base.
EDIT: I know the Sword wrist is a bit seperated. When i was removing the other arm it cracked the pin so i'll have to sort that at some point. No worries tho :)
Looks like a good crack at the shoulderpad to me, but I guess if you want to get it just right that makes sense. Shaping up well as a model.
In general, I think he looks really good - the main thing I think looks wrong is his left hip. I know you were hoping that the greenstuff would make it look better, but his leg doesn't look to be attached properly. Probably too late to do anything about it now, but if you did decide to then it might be worth a look at POs Pre-Heresy Dark Angel as he got that leg to fit right (but admittedly in a slightly different pose).
From these photos the hip looks like its definitely liveable with :) and generally the model looks fantastic with what looks o be an excellent paintjob. I agree with Myriad as well that the shoulder pad looks fantastic as it is. I look forward to seeing him finished.
Rob
Fantastic marine.
Also this may have been already answered (either here or somewhere) and if it has i must have missed it, but can you still get the helmeted head for the marine because i noticed it can no longer be bought seperatly and so am hoping that its been added to the box but i don't know if this is the case.
Matt
Unfortunately, the helmets have long been discontinued. They are also amongst the most highly sought-after OOP Inquisitor parts, so while you might occasionally see one put up on eBay, odds are it won't be going cheap.
Hi Alex, your SM is awesometastic ;D. Great positioning and overall pose. Your GS work is impressive... VERY IMPRESSIVE. The painting is crisp and clean. I look forward to the highlights stage. I, also, wouldn't mind one of these myself. Brilliant work.
Apart from some moss on the base I've finished :) So here he is, Battle Brother Arthas, one of the Fated 5th Company, former member of the Deathwatch. Apart from that he has no backstory and no stats.
any suggestions for my next marine? i'm thinking Alpha marine... not sure tho
Lovely stuff :) paint job, colour scheme, pose all really great! I particularly like the green against the red.
For a next project, I've always been a fan of the legions that have very questionable gene seeds, I don't remember their name but one of them grew spiked blades from the back of their elbows and had spined brows, would love to see that modelled!!
Rob
That'd be the Black Dragons I think. Damn Games Workshop stealing my name, how dare they!! It isn't the most imaginative name so I can't really hold it against them I suppose, tough anyway.
The red seems to have turned out quite nicely and the overall look is pretty good. I especially like the Aquilla, the bone colour looks very cleanly painted.
Pretty bloody amazing. The left (sword) hand seems to be a little disconnected from the forearm. Otherwise, fantastic. The Blood Ravens are a super choice... DOW!!! :P
Great job and lovely pose.
I think an Alpha Legion infiltrator would be a good INQ project.

Ahhhh thank you very much Kallidor :) Make one of those! Though Alpha legion would also be a great project.
Rob
Ok so i think my next project (when funds allow) will be an Alpha Legion marine. Probably in Mk 4 Maximus armour. Alpha Marines are one of the most secrative army choices, if you take the Horus Herasy books as cannon, then they arn't even true chaos marines. They betrayed the Emperor inorder to destroy the forces of Chaos and bring peace to the Galaxy.
Often cited as the only legion to have avoided they perversions of Chaos their armour would be nearly the same as when it was created, with a few alterations to show continued use and maintenance. Maximus armour was hard to maintain but this doesnt mean that it would have been discarded, and should the Alpha's still have manufacturing facilitys hidden about then they could easily keep them running. Fortunatly for me Alpha Marines have so little confirmed background, which gives us the ability to play around with them so much :)
