Quote from: Inquisitor Maltheus on July 10, 2013, 03:08:11 AMknow that this group of "Old Ones" contributed greatly to the shape of the conclave as it was, and is.
I inferred that. :P

I'd like to think I've made my own dent, but really all I do around here is shout about guns, physics, obscure fluff, Dan Abnett's writing, act all smug when people ask if anyone knows where to find the old articles*, make modelling complicated for myself, complain about my painting and occasionally stop other people winning categories at the Inquisitor Grand Tournament.

*Oh, on this note, do any of you old lot know what the file "Pstruggles.doc" was? Based on a list of filenames, I know it existed... but apart from a guess it's Cirian Legacy stuff, I don't know much else.
(For literature buffs: it's a bit like Love's Labours Won, except written by Games Workshop rather than Shakespeare and therefore much less important).

Quote from: Macabre on July 10, 2013, 03:12:38 AMLikewise, Marco, there's nothing to stop you from reading the old stuff in my archive
I downloaded it, but a quick estimation of the word count is over a million words - approximately equivalent to reading the entire Harry Potter series from scratch.

Add in the fact I'd need to work out what the chronological order of the stories was first... I'm guessing it's probably not something I can familiarise myself with in a hurry.

@Dosdamt: I'd like to, but there's SOOO much about old exploits and factions that the idea feels a bit like diving into the deep end wearing power armour. I won't float, I'll probably drown and the tech-priests'll have my ball bearings.
S.Sgt Silva Birgen: "Good evening, we're here from the Adeptus Defenestratus."
Captain L. Rollin: "Nonsense. Never heard of it."
Birgen: "Pick a window. I'll demonstrate".

Actually, I would imagine coming at it completely fresh would add a fantastic dynamic to the whole thing.

Not to turn this into Old Vs. New (though it'll probably come across this way by accident anyway), but is there a tl;dr version, or even just a rough guide to the order in which to read the archive's files, so that people like Marco (who joined the Conclave that much more recently) and myself (who remembers the Green Conclave, just, but got horrendously lost the first time round) can also contribute? If you think it's a good thing for people to join in "completely fresh", we need to find a way around a potential Continuity Lock-Out.

Hello! I'm back too!  ;D I don't know how much time I'll have.

For those who don't know, I'm a bit second/third-generation on all this (in that I didn't start until the Conclave was on the Specialist Games forum), although I have fairish idea of what happened beforehand. If anybody has a copy of 'Aboard Stark's Hope' (or whatever it was called), I found that a very good (extremely lengthy but very readable) introduction to everything. Here I'm looking at Charax, who I'm convinced has an awful lot of these files (though I'm not sure where).

In the meantime, you can get a very decontextualised introduction to the cast-as-it-was by reading the start of the thread which immediately succeeded Delan's Point, and which is definitely in Macabre's archive. I can't remember what it was called as I can't open .rars on this computer (I'm on a lunch break at work). I realise this isn't very helpful, but I will get more definite information this evening. In the meantime, there is a brief info-dump in 'New Friends, Old Enemies' - you want the conversation in which Mantis is talking to Sargoth and Karius, which is probably on the 2nd/3rd page (quite a lot of the thread consists of background-filling by myself and Sargoth for our own characters, but we were pretty peripheral to the major storyline when the Conclave petered out, so don't be too worried about that stuff. That said, Sargoth was surrounded by all kinds of prophetic stuff, so 'he just died at Delan's Point' would not be an appropriate outcome).

Generally speaking, though, if you're worried about continuity, just don't assume anything about the past. I think we're setting this 100-200 years after the original events.

If it helps, at the time these events came to their unresolved terminus, most of the characters were being drawn towards a meeting on a planet (or possibly moon, I can't remember) called Delan's Point. To oversimplify (really, really) radically, the factions were:

1) A daemon prince called Charax, who tended to intervene dramatically and unexpectedly;
2) AmonDull, the Big Bad, a daemon prince aiming to set himself up as a Chaos God;
3) A group of radical Inquisitors and their allies, all caught up (one way or another) with the legacy of an Inquisitor called Mentirius, who had vanquished AmonDull in his previous appearance;
4) A group of Puritans (and purported Puritans) called the Puritan Council, who didn't care or know much about AmonDull, but were very excited about the idea of destroying a large gathering of radicals, heretics and Xenos allies
[5) A mysterious figure called Landen Dosdamt, whose storyline never progressed very much and whose involvement in all this was a little unclear to me, but whose character development threads exhibited some of the best writing on the Conclave]

The Puritan Council were mostly from my generation. The major players amongst the radicals were very much from the previous generation, although there was a significant group from my generation. Most users had characters on both sides. At the time of cessation, the newer generation (in OOC terms) of radicals had joined the older generation on Delan's Point, where they were meeting to discuss the renewed AmonDull threat. The Puritan Council were also heading towards Delan's Point in great force, but Charax beat them to it and was in the process of killing lots of people.

The background is actually a great deal more extrensive than all this implies, and goes all the way back to something called the Nexus Schism, which I am pretty unqualified to describe (though I think it would be fair to say that it was definitely). There is definitely a recap thread somewhere on this very ancient-history stuff.

Inquisitor Sargoth

Marco, you want in on this. This is the old talent of the Conclave returning with years of further experience and maturity under their belts. You always liked my stuff (was it you who linked me on TvTtopes, unwittingly completing my life's ambition?) but, man, wait ;till you get a load of Menti or Dosdamt.

I've not jumped in yet myself - a clear plot/aim/etc has yet to emerge, but your lack of knowledge shouldn't be an impediment - most of the characters introduced don't know either. Wait until the thread has a bit more direction and stick your toe in.

Holy dicks on toast, these are names I haven't seen since my lurking days.
Cool.

As Marco and Koval say, getting caught up on a Harry Potter's-worth of backfluff is some serious reading, so .any. sort of tl;dr about any of the serious 'verse-shaping RPs would be appreciated - I think I started lurking after AD was already in motion, or I was just intimidated by the pagecount and was never up to speed on it in the first place.
I know the Dark Imperium (I think) was a little before my time, and it looked like a seeeeerious amount of work went into that one.

Also, Dosamdt - cool to see you back and active.
When these re-birth threads started picking up speed I was going to mail you to see if you had any of that work we and others did on the Mortal Engines-esque ice-hive-forge world. It had it's own forum at some point, and I think was home to the only RP I was involved in here.
And then I lost virtually all my ][-related files in a laptop death.

An interesting idea, but there is a problem with writing about leaks I don't know the details or importance of.

Voice 1: "There's been a leak."
Voice 2: "How big, Wilheim?"
Wilheim: "It's a leak."
Voice 2: "I heard you the first time. But if it's about Inquisitor Krenn putting in an expenses claim for a bird-feeder or the complaint Inquisitrix Rall made about the toilet paper in the Conclave bathrooms, I don't care."
Wilheim: "No, it's big."
Voice 2: "Okay then. What is it?"
Wilheim: "Big."

Maltheus: Very excited about this post of yours.  I've been working with a date of 250.M42, around 250 years after Delan's Point.  Just in case I haven't posted on the subject elsewhere, I should probably almost mention that Amon Dull is no longer around - there wouldn't be many Imperial records of what happened to it, if any, but my IC stance is that Delan's Point was its last attack on Imperial forces (if you could call the radicals that).  It did reach Aithol, which subsequently disappeared into the warp, but hasn't been heard from since.  Either it underestimated the White Child, or Tzeentch was always toying with his creation, in a similar fashion to its own manipulation of the mortals.  Amaurn might still be around though; I haven't really decided.  If he is, he's deep in the shadows somewhere.  Incidentally, a twist I never got around to revealing last time was that towards the end, the daemon had stopped communicating with Inquisitor Maltheus directly and had instead tinkered subtly with his mind, creating a second personality (the man in the suit) to torment the poor guy on its behalf.  Still, I imagine he would have had ample time to get around that in the intervening years, and really I always intended him to survive the ordeal relatively intact.  Anyway, feel free to ignore that if it conflicts with anything, since I never actually posted on the subject...

Karius: Welcome back! I don't suppose you'd feel like doing something with the Mentirians at some stage?  My vague intention for their future had been that the bulk of them died at Delan's Point along with Mantis, leaving Karius to inherit the title...I liked the idea of the remnants merging with his society, and it's what the old man would have wanted.  If that did happen, their philosophy would likely have evolved under his leadership, and the outcome a few centuries on could be interesting.  I was intending to start with a Mentirian post, but at the moment I find myself distracted by the prospect of gribblies.

Marco, Koval & Nephew, I can only apologise if our sudden mass reappearance came across heavy-handed...having found the Conclave still active after all this time seems to have blown many of our minds, myself included.  We certainly don't want to exclude or marginalise anyone, and I for one am thoroughly impressed by those of you who have kept this place alive.  However, far as summarising all the old sagas goes, I'm afraid I shudder at the prospect of trying to write such a document, and I get the feeling other codgers will agree with me.  There's just too much to include; I'd have no idea how to go about it.  But part of the point of setting the current story hundreds of years on is to leave room for new plotlines unconnected to the old ones, and to allow for the possibility that many participants won't remember what came before.

OOC, I think even those of us who wrote them have forgotten some of the old stories.  IC, with the amount of time that has passed stories is all they would be to most Inquisitors.  Aside from intentional suppression of information by concerned parties, a lot of the events were of a sort that would never have been properly recorded in the first place...daemon fights daemon in the Eye of Terror, internal politics in the Dark Imperium (vampire empire), etc.  Our current portrayal of the IC archive file seems to mirror the OOC one - a chaotic jumble of accounts a casual reader would have to choose between sifting carefully through, or simply skimming over in the hope a pattern might emerge.  Given the unreliable nature of interstellar communication, many of those who received it and decided to act would surely have incomplete or corrupted versions, and there's no saying every character who ends up involved in these events would have received it at all.

With all that said, if things get too confusing, perhaps we could start an FAQ of some kind?  Deal with things on a need-to-know basis, compiling explanations somewhere as we go?  In the absence of a complete summary, that might be a more manageable solution to the background issue...

I posted a new thread, where I tried to summarise everything. Consider it a living document, and I'll update.

The way I would roll with it is

- Imagine if the Inquisition history said, for this period, hey there was this bunch of dandy radicals who went about doing stuff, and anyway they got smashed into pieces and here's a bunch of real heroes for you. Good job everyone!

- Imagine if the truth was much murkier than that - that yes, a good portion of the radicals were Horus Loving Good For Nothin' Ne'er-do-wells but some of them weren't. Some of them were interested in unity. Others were more interested in simply stopping greater evils, such as Amon Dull, whatever the cost.

- Imagine if some of the names of the Puritan Council, the ones who accounted for the truth and wrote the history, from that time were besmirched with all kinds of back door dealings, scandalous lies, and vile philosophies. Staged trials. Puppet victims.

- Imagine if all this came out

Imagine if the truth of the Inquisition was an illusion
Imagine if everyone knew it was a sham
Imagine if

Everything you have been told is a lie

And now, you have the proof

No worries - the moment I posted I was hit by a niggling doubt as to whether it was actually you that was involved in it.
And to be fair, as far as concrete details about it goes, I don't remember much past what I put above. And that the boards defaulted to an easy on the eye light blue background.

I'm looking forward to getting properly involved - hopefully going to throw up a rough sketch of the character I'm planning on bringing to the 'Clave in September, and maybe also RPing in Welcome to the Truth-spawned arcs, since the concept is mostly aimed at that.

EDIT: Found it...

Now six-years dead and mildly bot-nibbled.
The main players seemed to have been Vendile, Mohauk and mystery Doug (who I'm sure had a Conclave alter-ego that I can't for the life of me remember).
Dosamdt, I think I was right about the RP (from way back summer 2009), only it had nothing to do with that planet stuff...
