Return of Necromunda
« on: August 13, 2017, 04:27:03 PM »
Although not Inquisitor news (although doubtless it will be a boon to 28mm players), it would seem amiss not to bring up today's big news regarding Specialist Games:

Breaking News: Necromunda Returns!

Apparently it's going to be loosely 8th Edition based and won't be compatible with Shadow War (and by extension, old Necromunda).

~~~~~
Personally, I think the Goliaths they've shown so far look okay, but I'm a bit underwhelmed by the Escher - maybe it's the paintjob letting them down (unfortunately, all of the pictures I've thus far seen of bare plastics from the FW open day are too blurry to make out), but I don't feel they live up to the original metals from 1996.
S.Sgt Silva Birgen: "Good evening, we're here from the Adeptus Defenestratus."
Captain L. Rollin: "Nonsense. Never heard of it."
Birgen: "Pick a window. I'll demonstrate".
I thought the Escher looked ok. Not as good as the old models, but then again I view those as the best models GW ever produced, so it was always going to be a difficult standard to meet.
Disappointed it won't be Shadow War/2nd Ed compatible, but still we've already got a good ruleset for Necromunda (and the Revised edition over on Yaktribe has ironed out most of the remaining kinks over the years) and the new models will be a good addition (especially for some gangs like the Goliaths).
Fingers crossed that we'll get some sort of Inquisitor love in the near future.
Preorder date for this is November 11th.
Website: https://necromunda.com/
Looks like there will be starter/boardgame type rules in the box set and a separate gang war book which will contain the more detailed stuff such as the other gangs, campaign rules etc.
Honestly I do think it's the paint jobs letting those minis down.
They're not bad, and I am mulling over whether or not to buy in to this new necromunda (newcromunda?), given that I'll need to buy that expansion booklet as well to get my mileage out of the product.
Hopefully they'll just do both the rulebooks separately so I can decide on the minis later (I never liked goliaths, and I've already got plenty of eschers).
I think it's mostly the paintjob that's letting them down - I've seen a few pics of the plastics on an imageboard and they looked ok.
I'm less impressed with "It's a 80 Necromunda-based boardgame that you can buy a 40 3D and campaign expansion book for".
I'll be amazed if ][ gets a look in, but I can see them releasing Acolyte teams for a bunch of the systems out at the moment.
As much as it irks me, if they've figured out a way to turn a profit on these boxed specialist games so their corporate overlords keep giving the creatives free reign with releases, I'll swallow that pill. It was axed the first time round for being too fun and not making enough money, and I'd rather pay a little extra to keep GW producing stuff like this rather than re-releasing space marines every two years.
I'm super stoked to see what direction they're going to take it, I'm fascinated to see what their modern take on Van Saar and Delaque will be...
It's more worrying that they're not going to include all the weapon rules in the gang war booklet. Seems like they're completely obsessed with no model no rules, to the extent that there won't even be rules for chainswords! I don't know how many books/supplements/pdfs you're going to need to actually play this game once it's all out in 12 months time (They're also planning a drip feed release schedule of one gang a 1/4).
Yeah, the "no model, no rules" bit is killing it for me, as we already have models! (albeit ones about a decade and change in age)
Not including the full list of all gangs/weapons in the expansion book basically killed any chance of me buying the box set + expansion book.
I'm going to wait for either a compilation book with all the houses/gangs/factions/rules/weapons in it, and use my exiting models, or just ignore the whole thing as a bad idea and carry on using the yaktribe rules.
I mean, alternating activations is an initiative style that I find very pleasing in a skirmish game of any nature, so I'm glad it is (reputedly) in the new rules, but without the ability to use my own forces to play the game with, I think I'm going to give it a hard pass until they fix the situation like they did with the separate SW:A core rules re-release which had absolutely everything in it regarding rules/stats. If they provide a full rules/weapons/gangs compiled rulebook with all the trimmings, I'll buy that.
Paying ~75 quit for 1/3 of a game (that's using Element Games pricing) just isn't acceptable at all compared to GW's previous offerings, so there's no way I'm opening my wallet for this one.
I'm probably going to buy the box set because I want the models and so might as well get the core rules and all the barricades and bulkheads in the same box (I should be able to find uses for those bits). Although it isn't that great value for money really especially with only having a fraction of the rules, so maybe I'll just buy the gangs and wait and see if they release a full rules compliation down the road.
75 is rrp. Element games are selling it for 60 (which makes it just about acceptable price wise).
74 if you also buy the gang war supplement (which is where I was coming from).
I can sort of see buying the models - the eschers anyway. I have never liked Goliaths.
Well Necromunda is out and I've got my copy. I have to say they've rather stingy with the box contents in comparison to other boxed starter sets. If you're going to get it, get it with a discount it really isn't worth it at full price.
There's also no reason the gang war book couldn't have been included in the box. There's space for it and it's really quite thin. I'm struggling to call it anything else other than a money grab.
I was looking at the set up at the flgs, which looked great, until I was told it was almost two full boxes of terrain.
And then noticed that Gang Wars is barely half an inch think.
I'd agree with Cortez - there's no reason for it not to be one set with optional 3D rules, and even if having extra terrain would make a 2D game pretty cluttered, it would add a bit more variability to the terrain arrangements.
Any word on how the Gang War stuff actually plays yet?
Welp, they've now also announced Gang Wars 2, which will be exclusively Orlock, along with preview pics of the orlock gang.
The new orlocks do actually look pretty damn good though.
So I guess Eschers and Orlocks are good minis for my tastes.
The last litmus test, minis wise, will be the van saars. If they get that right, then I'll be buying some minis.
I still want to wait for a fully combined single rulebook with all the rules in though.
A sort of Necromunda Compendium, you might say.
Or in the spirit of portmanteau creation, a Necropendium.
this; i've got plenty of Delaque and the box isn't limited edition so i'm gonna hold off buying anything till we see; unless they release Legacy Gang rules the same way Shadow War did...
i make no apologies, i warned you my ability to roll ones was infectious...
