Syrias van Drake

After a break from Inquisitor of almost 4 years our group still needs to adjust the power-level of our characters but here are some first drafts of my Character sheets. Most of our games are played with three characters per warband and we use 'Giving Birth to a Monster' to determine the stats of our characters.

In my other thread you can see some pics:

I roled for the stats and reduced some values.

Thanks in advance for your feedback.

P.S.: I still have to write the storys for my characters.

This will make it difficult to make particular suggestions for improvements to the profiles.

Although "Giving Birth to a Monster" was certainly the genesis of the current "meta" of character creation, we now tend to recommend writing profiles by hand, as the experience of the community is that random profiles are not a reliable balancing mechanism nor a particularly good way of actually getting an appropriate profile for the character. (Being plastic polyhedrons, dice don't know whether a character's background says he's a great shot, a bit of a weakling, prone to occasional flashes of genius, etc).

Certainly though, the consensus has been that the game plays better with less super powered characters than the profiles in the original rulebook (and that's something that Derek Gillespie's article helped start), as when characters are less skilled it makes things less dependent on the luck of who gets to attack first (and generally makes the game more dramatic when the players can't be quite so sure whether their characters will succeed).

This can be particularly true when adding in skills.

With that in mind, I'd push down the BS on your gun fighters dramatically (at least 5 points, probably even 10). Bearing in mind that they'll be getting to fire two weapons per action with the same modifiers as most characters can fire one (or Slydo's case, almost, given he'll still have an off-hand penalty for one of the pistols), their base accuracy shouldn't be any more than moderately high (and personally, I consider anything over 70 to be very high for BS, as it can be stacked with multiple +20 modifiers for aiming - no other rolls in the game get to enjoy bonuses anything like that large)

As far as the logic behind that, they must have spent years learning how to accurately fire guns akimbo, so they'll not be quite as accurate if they'd put the same time into learning to use just one gun.

Particularly so for Slydo, as bolt pistols are fairly difficult weapons that are a lot harder to become an expert in than a laspistol. (And also quite dangerous in-game, so generally games balance better if they're not in the hands of really accurate characters).

You may find the Carthax Wiki's page on the "Conclave Standard" quite a useful guide on writing profiles for Inquisitor - although it's a bit open to interpretation, this approach tends to be the current standard for writing Inquisitor characters.

S.Sgt Silva Birgen: "Good evening, we're here from the Adeptus Defenestratus."
Captain L. Rollin: "Nonsense. Never heard of it."
Birgen: "Pick a window. I'll demonstrate".

Syrias van Drake

Thank you very much for your input.

There is an idea of a story for every character. It's just not well formulated.

Syrias van Drake was born on the Hive World Thracian Primaris and Ordo Helican recruited him for his latent psychic abilities (which he never developed further). He soon became the alcolyth of the Ordo Hereticus Inquisitor Ignatius Richter. Richter was a Monodominant and realy devoted to his work. During his training they purged the heretic coven of Askalus and they hunted down the radical Inquisitor Samuel Cortez. Since Syrias fought most of his battles against humanoid enemies, he specialised himself on ranged combat in close quarters (urban areas, etc.). With 59 years, he was appointed Inquisitor and joined the Ordo Hereticus.

On a mission on Armageddon (hunting down a rogue trader making deals with heretics), he recruited Lyzella, who helped him to find the rogue trader. Slydo, a skilled but stubborn imperial Officer from Cadia, joined the group after Syrias saved him from execution, after he killed another officer in a duel.

Syrias is a moderate puritan (I have to find a matching orientation) and he tries not to follow the path of his master, but sometimes he struggles with his ideals. He is devoted to hunting heretics and radicals, who endanger the integrity of the Inquisition.

My goals: Back in my 54mm-days I both read Eisenhorn and Ravenor and I always wanted to create a young Inquisitor, who tries to follow his (moderate) path but gets more and more forced to use extreme or even radical methods to prevent the victory of greater evils. I don't know  how this will turn out in the games, but I hope it will be a good way to get personal struggels and difficult decisions involved.
