This guy has a blog on making a bolter: http://www.bolter.blog.com/

He's also made possibly the world's most awesome (and hottest) 40k costume, as modelled by his wife: http://z6.invisionfree.com/Obscurus_Crusade/index.php?showtopic=8

The latter link is for full-scale 40k costuming, so there's quite a bit of stuff in there for a new forum.

...no, I haven't made a 40k costume.  Yet.

Actually, I used Citadel paints throughout the Recon modification, and they were fine in both coverage and contact.  I worked over a sprayed undercoat of Chaos Black.

However, the Recon was hard work.  Sanding off the Nerf logos took forever and caused some unavoidable damage to other details.  Taking it apart was laborious and putting it back together again took four goes and risked breaking it.

Having said that, it does look pretty cool now it's finished.  And eBay thought it was too realistic to sell on their site, so my auction was taken down.  The entire thing is still for sale.  Sealed bids to me, please.  Nothing under £50.  Highest bid wins.

Oh, I also made a minor internal mod to increase the range and muzzle velocity.

I've also done mods on the much easier Maverick-6:

Oh right. The Google pics I've seen of the N-strike seem to suggest that it's meant to come apart reasonably easily. Is it more difficult than it looks, or do you have to take it apart further in order to paint it successfully?
On MSN? Add me! Let's face it; if you don't I'll just add you.

Yes, significantly so. You'll need to unscrew it and largely take it back to individual parts.
S.Sgt Silva Birgen: "Good evening, we're here from the Adeptus Defenestratus."
Captain L. Rollin: "Nonsense. Never heard of it."
Birgen: "Pick a window. I'll demonstrate".

Ah, right. Oh well, it still seems to be my best option, so I'll stick with it.

Inquisitor Cade

If you can find precinctomega's page on deviant art he gives some of the details of the process.
