Space Marine Backpack

so, while i'm idly waiting for the snow plows to go by my house, i'm looking at the 54mm Space Marine.
having never assembled a "vanilla" Artemis, it occurs to me that that backpack sits out way to far and i think that's what's bothering me about my latest conversion.

looking at the showcase, has anyone cut back that riser onto which the packpack goes? or are they all just attached normally?

I've assembled two marines, and although never altered the backpack at any great length, I hadn't considered it to be too far out.
