Specialised models

You'll probably have noticed the lack of updates on my project thread. Kai's sculpting has been delayed somewhat while I work over an issue, but as something of compensation, I've been mulling over an another idea which you might like to hear.

I've got a number of different things I'd love to build - scenery, vehicles, special NPCs, etc.
However, the problem is that while these things would be quite neat, most of them are pretty specialised, and I'll probably only get to use them few times in their life. Much though I'd love to build stuff like an Inq scale Dreadnought, however impressive a display piece it was, I'd feel it was wasteful if it didn't get used.

I'm therefore proposing something of an idea. This is based on the core assumption that I'm considering these things because I think they'd be good to base a scenario around, so I'm assuming that there are others out there who'd like to be able to run scenarios with exactly this kind of thing in them.

The basic idea is that I build these various things over time, and as each one is done, I then offer it up to be booked on a first come first served basis for any Conclave event I'll be at - free of charge, of course.
When it comes to the day of the event, I bring along whatever things got booked and lend each to the respective borrower for the day*. They use it to whatever end in their scenario, then at the end of the day, I bring it all back home satisfied with the warm fuzzy feeling of knowing the models got to see gameplay.
If you want to take photos of the game you're running and send them to me, then that's even better.

*Obviously, the borrower would be wise to make sure they do have a backup scenario in case of my unexpected absence, but that's just a risk any system like this will have to work around.

I can't say say for certain that this'll happen, nor can I be certain in advance what my projects are going to be.
But it's likely that I'll have a Rhino amongst the vehicles, at least because it's the thing I think I'll most be able to use personally - the basic chassis could be easily supplemented with interchangeable parts, allowing a healthy range of different vehicles.

If you like the idea, and think you'd be interested in using (or even contributing to) such a system, then post whatever comments and suggestions below.

I'm not sure this really requires any special effort or defined setup like your suggesting, I think all anyone would need to say was, "I have this awesome thing that I won't be using myself at this event, but if someone would like me to bring it along with me to borrow for the day then that's cool"

I generally bring along the Valkyrie and/or Arvus to any events and people can use them if they want to; the same goes for NPCs - I normally bring along a few extra characters and people sometimes borrow them for the odd game.  On occasion, people who know I have something they need will get in contact before-hand and ask if I can bring it along.

Maybe I too am missing the point of this thread, but how is this any different?  Or is the point of this thread really to ask people what sorts of things they'd like you to build?  I imagine if you built a Rhino there'd be plenty of people wanting to use it...
I like to remember things my own way... Not necessarily the way they happened.

That's the basic principle. I build these various things, and in the interests of getting them used, any of them I'm not planning to use myself will be available to borrow.

It probably doesn't need a particularly special system, but if I'm doing this, I want it reasonably clear that the models are freely offered to whoever wants to use them.
This thread is mostly poking around to find out who uses/would use such a system. If there's no-one out there who would borrow a Rhino/Dreadnought/etc if it were available, then I'd be daft to build things with the assumption that there are people out there who would.

Not that's my sole reason for building them, but like I say, if I am building them, I'd want to see them get healthy use.
I get the idea that this is already reasonably common fare from the above posts, but as my attendance at Conclave events is limited to a single and rather under-populated IGT, I'm not really in a position that I know how much it happens.

Not exactly. I'll almost certainly be asking a few "If I built an X, who might be interested in borrowing it?" questions as I get ideas, to work out whether it'd get used, but I wasn't necessarily looking for suggestions.
Of course, if people have suggestions, they can propose them - I may like the idea enough to go with it.

aye; i was somewhat wary of this thread's existence, but thinking about it, could be used as a resource for stuff people are willing to bring to events for use by other GMs and, who knows, may help inspire people writing scenarios and so on, so if you've got "10 man generic grunt squad" could be worth mentioning incase someone wants a roit taking place ingame...
i make no apologies, i warned you my ability to roll ones was infectious...

That's pretty much it. Just having some kind of central list of the various scenery, vehicles or NPCs that people will lend out at events. It doesn't matter if these various things are available if people don't know.

Having a reasonably well advertised pool of resources would allow people to write and GM scenarios they might not be able to do normally - and no doubt spark all kinds of interesting ideas.

What sorts of things would you put on the list? Vehicles are unusual enough that there's no question they should be included, but what about terrain, characters etc. I could just list ones that I think would be useful to other people - but there may be something I have that someone would love to base a scenario around but that I hadn't considered useful enough to list...

couldn't the thread be used for this too?

As far as scenery and NPCs, I'd just put anything that makes a reasonably obvious objective, or scenario resource. If you've got a Titan Princeps or Daemon Prince, that kind of thing would make a good central objective. Scenery wise, stuff like shrines, sacrificial altars, suspicious artefacts or whatever could act as a core for a scenario.
And as Gav says, things like a healthy grunt squad are a useful resource for a scenario.

No need to list every model you own or generic buildings though. If people are looking for something particularly specific, rather than just browsing for general ideas, then they'll probably need to ask.

Truth be told, I don't currently have all that much of this kind of stuff. I mostly dig out various odds and ends from my 40k and Fantasy collections for objectives - but like I say, I'm looking to change that.

Actually, that reminds me - I was trying to find the teleport beacon (from the Terminator boxed set) to use the other day, but I'll be damned if I can find it. I need to make a mental note to keep an eye out for it.
