Title: Guitars
Post by: Kaled on August 30, 2010, 08:14:16 PM
It's been a while since I built a model, but I've just started on a Navigator and I like the idea of him having a guitar slung across his back. So, I need a guitar (or similar) and would rather not have to build it myself.  There's a 54mm one on Historex, but it doesn't fit the heroic proportions of Inquisitor and is rather small. Anyone know where I can find such a thing, either from a model or toy?

you do get small guitars....

why not make something more fanciful, but is basically some kind of (d)evolution of a guitar? therefore recognisable, but a bit different.

I'm pretty sure Andrea have a guitar of some-sort available separately, but i may be wrong.

I can't help thinking of Vitali Gogol, Navigator for Inquisitor Jaq Draco, who, IIRC, played the mandolin...

... and I can't help thinking of Tubular Bells whenever I hear the word mandolin.

I had originally planned on making the guitar myself, but wasn't sure I could pull off a convincing minature stringed instrument - but the idea of a kind of Guitar Hero controller type thing might be do-able if I can't find one somewhere.

That reminded me of something, possibly some kind of keytar (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keytar), or this (http://www.guitarbookshop.com/yamaha-guitars/yamaha-ez-ag-lighted-guitar.asp).  And the same site has this (http://www.guitarbookshop.com/yamaha-guitars/yamaha-slg100s.asp).  And if you google 'futuristic guitar' you get a few more interesting things among the pointy rock/metal stuff.  Like this (http://www.existingvisual.com/2010/03/09/replicating-guitar-reality/), and this (http://www.tuvie.com/zoybar-modular-hardware-kit-for-custom-instruments/), and this (http://www.geekologie.com/2008/07/steampunk_guitar_is_looking_go.php), and this (http://www.likecool.com/The_Misa_Digital_Guitar--MusicKit--Gear.html). ;D  And look, it even suggested some scruffy heretics to purge. Hmmm, that seems do-able - I had thought that wire that thick would look wrong, but it works surprisingly well.

So, a question for all you 'Clavers who play guitar and are thus more familiar with the instrument than me - if you were building a heroic 54mm guitar, how big would it be?

If some knowledgeable person could give me approximate dimensions (length, width depth) for the body and the length of the neck that would be great.

Thanks,
Dave

I don't know much about guitars, but here is someone who made guitars for warhammer 40k:

(for scale tyranid warriors are approximately 50mm high)

Your best bet is to do it by eye, possibly with some pictures of people playing guitars handy for reference. get a cereal box and draw the basic shape and size you think'll work and then see how it looks. Make adjustments based on your findings.

It will probably want to be a simillar length as a shot gun I would guess but I don't have access to my models to check (Though I do have access to several guitars).

I think tht would make it a good bit too long actually, certainly most shotguns I've used have been longer than a guitar by 4-10inches, though probably on average the lower number.

I'm 5 foot 6 or so (not particularly tall) and my friend's acoustic guitar is more than half my height - when on my back, with the bottom just below my waist, the head sticks out over my head...

I'll take a picture of me with a guitar when I have a day off work (saturday I think...) depends on what ur going for. you might go or a 3/4 size guitar IRL for touring / barding type activities.

it might be easy enough to wander into a guitar shop and pick one up if you are unfamiliar (not in the purchasing sense but the physical lifting sense) give you a feel for it.

A guitar, huh? That's one you don't hear often.

If you build it yourself (which I definitely suggest), would be to use plasticard thread for the strings. I've got a selection of different widths, some of which is really hair-thin. If I can buy that kind of thing in this remote corner of the world, I'm sure you can find it in Britain!

As for guitar size, at a rough guess I'd say half a person's height, maybe a bit more. I'll see if I can scrounge up a photo, or you could wait for one from Adam.

It will look better if it's bigger than it should be, hence my sugestion. As I said though, Trial and error. But I reckon (Though, I don't have anything available to check by eye) being about as long as a Shotgun or Lasgun is in 54mm will be a good starting point.

I've sketched up a guitar shape I like, so I plan to mock it up in card to test it for size and then once I get that right I'll build it in plasticard (similar to those someone linked to on Warseer). Pics will follow once I start building.

I don't think I've ever seen anyone selling plasticard thread, but I've never looked as that sort of thing is easy to make. Just get some sprue, heat it with a lighter (ask a grown up to help) and quickly stretch it to the desired length/thickness. It takes a couple of attempts to get it right, but once you have the knack it's easy.

Looking at those guitars, they maybe drop-castable.. Just unsure on the necks; if they're level with the back it should be doable :)

Most electric guitars are around 40" in length, so roughly half the height of the model would probably look right.

The extra width of Inq models will make a scale guitar look like a eukelele.

Have you decided how you want it to look yet?

Right here I am, good to my word, holding a guitar (or three...):

heh.

I bought the black electro acoustic a year or so ago. I've had the strat for as long as I can remember and the 3/4 left hander belonged to my sister when she was 8. Narce Romanov has been arounda while... I havent bought a new mini in approaching 8 months now. :(

anyone want to buy a fiat punto?

"Strat"?  We can all see it's a Squire, Adam.  Come back when your choice of axe has "Fender" on the head!  :P

glad to help. i'm trying to be a bit less of a lurker again... tried to assemble some minis today but... no superglue.
Title: Re: Guitars
Post by: Kaled on September 03, 2010, 12:21:08 PM
A lack of glue would hamper efforts to build models...

Could I ask for another favour?  The idea is for the Navigator to gave his guitar slung across his back, but not having a guitar I'm not sure quite how it should hang - any chance I could get another photo or two?

Not the best photo I'm afraid, but hopefully enough to give you an idea of how it's turned out.

Now to finish building the Navigator so I can sling it across his back (btw, thanks for another useful pic Adam).

looks good! all i would say is that the neck and head look a bit on the large side. better pics would help :P
Title: Re: Guitars
Post by: Kaled on September 06, 2010, 08:56:26 AM
Yes, the neck and head are a bit big but I decided I needed to make it with 'heroic' proportions - mostly because my Navigator is based on the Crime Lord who is a rather oddly proportioned model with large hands, head etc (they're large even compared to the rest of the range). He also has short stubby legs which I've extended (probably making his proportions worse as now his arms are about 2mm too short, and changing those is more work than I fancy doing) - I'm using the excuse that he's a navigator and thus a bit of a mutant!
