Gave up on painting anything before all the models I have are assembled since I like converting FAR more than painting (with the exception of two pieces I'm working on in secret ;) )
Anyway, here's the current gallery:
Thought my mutants could use some fire power. I'm giving this guy a third arm to help hold his big gun and I'm adding a foot to his robotic leg-arm, this is just a mockup (he's also getting pants).
Here is the leader of my renegade mutants. He rounds up his less heretical brethren and trades them to a rogue Magos Biologus in exchange for shiny things (which is also how the above guy got his fancy bionics).
And a side shot with the sword:
My Data-Runner. He's basically Johnny Pneumonic. When a tech priest is after forbidden tech/programs he'll often hire this guy to procure the wares/info for transport if it needs to be done under the radar. Currently he has a Malign Intelligence hanging around in his head after transporting a daemonic program for an Inquisitor.
An exceptionally clever assassin who was being trained as a Callidus but reacted poorly to that drug that the Callidus take to be shape-shifty. An ordor Sicarius Inquisitor saved her from execution and now she's his right-hand woman.
Here is the second member of the above mentioned Sicarius band. He resided at a satellite Temple which the Eversor program recruits from. He is mute and was believed to be an idiot, utilized only to clean the premises but allowed to observe the training of other recruits and participated in the physical exercises as penance for his supposed stupidity. When his room was being inspected one day a treatise on terror-tactics was discovered carved into the bottom of his bunk. Lots of work to go on this guy's story and the model itself.

I've posted this before, but I'm reposting it because I'm so happy with my purchase of Gav's techpriest. This guy is unhappy because a string of mysterious deaths catapulted his rival past him in the pecking order.
Here's an extreme WIP and one of my new attempts at more of a self-sculpt. Not much to look at...YET!
Here is a big mutant. Originally he was inspired by Jason Vorhees but over time grew a personality and the model ended up being a cross between the Splatterhouse Hero and a Resident Evil villain (mostly his weapon). He'll be in the warband of my vampyre hunting inquisitor (IT'S SO MUCH COOLER WITH A "Y"!!!!!1). He regenerates/generated body mass very slowly (not quick enough to have the in-game regen ability) and it has allowed him to reach a super-human strength level. He also enjoys piercing himself with sharp objects which his skin eventually heals around and bonds to his muscles. Lots of work left, but I'm overjoyed which his splatty/rendy weapon.
His weapon, perhaps the most brutal thing I've ever constructed:
The aged vampyre hunting inquisitor. As a young man he once indulged in the practice of using the chaotic arts to heal himself (a form of vampyrism) and now uses the enlongated life he has to destroy those who would traverse that path. Obviously lots of self loathing and I'm working on his "Dark Passenger" rules to reflect his tenuous grasp on sanity (also I'm a big Dexter fan).
Actually this is my first hardcore Horusian Inquisitor. I refer to him as "The First Radical" because a man fitting his description using various aliases (some of them Inquisitors) has appeared throughout the ages. His real backstory isn't that grand, but he does have a strong network of underlings and has been known to go into cryo-hibernation after setting his plans into action. He has a piece of archeotech grafted into his right hand which will either grant him the Psychic Impel ability or Warp Lightning (through technology, not warp connection), I haven't decided which. He's INCREDIBLY envious of psychers.
Here's my beastman, he's actually in one of my more conservative warbands. The hook is that he's the hidden away son of an Imperial priest that was the adviser of said conservative Inquisitor. The priest entrusted the Inquisitor with the secret shame of his son as he was dying. After testing the beastman, the Inquisitor believes him to be pure of spirit and allows him to serve in his entourage as penance for the sin of his existence. Much to the anger of his more mono-dominant Interrogator, the Inquisitor gradually becomes rather fond of the beastman. Anyway, less talk, more pics.
Here is my WIP Necron Lord. I posted a little backstory on him a few weeks back, here he is. Verrrry long story short, he is still infected with a technovirus and has been forced to use stripped Imperial tech to sustain himself. He is very WIP, as in his head stops at his nose.
And, as promised, here are three daemons (well, one daemon-host and two for real daemons). The host is very WIP, but will be missing his midsection and appear to be held together by the tentacles visible in this pic. The second model is a Tzeentchian daemon, calling him the Changling, I'm planning to have him be a shape-shifter. The third is the Angel of Blood. I'm planning to Khorn up his face and have him be the sevant of the God of Iron (Krhom, at least in my universe) who was the former armorer of Khorn before Khorn discovered his love of bronze. Krhom became one of The Seduced (in my universe, The Seduced are chaos entities which tried to realign themselves with Slaanesh after the fall, to varying degrees of success). Krhom was spurned by Slaanesh who found his iron forms to be clumsy and in order to regain favor he must consume the souls of one million fallen Eldar (read, dark eldar) for Khorn (essentially atoning for his sin by taking souls promised to Slaanesh). Also, there'll be a tie-in with the Iron Warrior I'm working on (only in my head).
Again, less talk and more models:

I'm torn about what to arm the Angel of Blood with. I feel like it'd be a waste to just go with the stock DP arms, plus I want to showcase his allegiance to the god of Iron. I've been at a loss with what to do for a bit.
Anyway, due to life situations I doubt I'll be able to do substantial work between now and November 2nd, but there should be a flurry of activity after that time. Hope you enjoy! (it seemed like it had been a few days since someone posted a bunch of new pics)
Some very nifty conversion (I too enjoy converting and modelling far, far more than painting) but I think my favourite is the assassin, a really excellent model and some very clever parts use.
A really nice selection of models there, I really like the revolver with the scope on it belonging to the vampyre hunter, it's so simple yet I havn't seen it before, and it's definitely an idea I may have to borrow! I also really like the beastman, it's such a well-fitting selection of stock GW parts that havn't been used before and produces a really evocative model, good job!
They all look interestingly good
One point why psychic impel or warp lightning the device looks similar to Huron's powerfist which acts as a flamer

why not use some of the pyromancy abilities instead?
some great stuff there.
re:the angel of blood, perhaps a giant chainaxe or a two-handed ornate smiths hammer?
Chains - they'll fit both with the God of Iron image, and with the chains on the face. Two big chainwhips, for whipping the ever-loving life out of anything that comes too close. Also could let you produce a really dramatic look, with some work...
What was the head used on the Jason Voorhees big mutant? really love that character and his rendy weapon :P and the entire sicarius warband is absolutely fantastic.
Look forward to everything being finished :)
Rob
Its from the defiler one of its face plates I used it on my chaos marine a few years back
AHHH cheers for that, may see if bits and kits has it now....
QuoteHe's basically Johnny Pneumonic.
Is this a deliberate pun?

Quotewhy not use some of the pyromancy abilities instead?
I definitely see your point, it DOES bear a striking resemblance. For a different character I'd go with the fire, but this guy is extremely envious of psychers and I think recreating something that can be achieved with a hand flamer (or, more covertly with a digi-flamer) wouldn't quite cut it for him. He doesn't want to be the birthday party magician pulling scarves from his mouth, he wants to be David Copperfield and make you wonder what the heck you just saw (if that metaphor makes sense).
QuoteQuoteHe's basically Johnny Pneumonic.
Is this a deliberate pun?
Very sadly no, it's an accidental misspelling :(. However I was planning to try and give him some fancy pneumatics on his legs as I picture him doing lots of evading and is the type to attempt super-human leaps (preferably between two improbably high buildings in a hive or forge world somewhere).
As for the Angel of Blood, I'm thinking chains may be the ticket. As much as I'd love to give him a giant chain weapon or ornate axe I already have two characters with large daemonicish chain weapons (the Inquisitor in here and the Red Prince, who is somewhere on the conclave) and two characters with ornate hammers (the Vorhees guys, which also has chains, and my Hecuba character, who is also somewhere on the conclave). While more subdued, if I do it right it could look great, while also combining the best elements of a daemon with affiliations/former affiliations with my invented God of Iron, Khorn and Slaneesh.
Doozy of a thread. I dunno if I'm more impressed with the model concepts or the background concepts. I especially like the little bit of extra mythology you added onto the ruinous powers.
"Jonny Pneumonic" or even "Jonny Pneumatic" would make great names for INQ characters.
R.
Just in case my reference was too vague, I was comparing the data runner to Keanu Reeves character in this film: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johnny_Mnemonic_%28film%29
While I do like the name/possibilities for spin-offs of it, I would feel a little cheap, as if I were naming someone Luke Skyhopper or Jean Luc Picaddilly.
Quote from: Alyster Wick on September 19, 2010, 04:14:36 PM
Jean Luc Picaddilly.
This immediately made me want to call a character Jean Renault :P
After years of people getting his name wrong, Johnny Pneumatic has developed an attitude problem. looks a bit unhinged certainly, lots of potential.
Great mutant quota as always. Love the beastman model, and the accompanying background. Another cool conversion of the navigator model. Gotta get me one of those.
A few quick updates. Did some modeling work before I do some writing, decided to post the results.
I'm up in the air about the Angel of Iron, I'm considering renaming him the Iron Maw (I'm planning to model a giant steel jaw and a guitar wire tongue) and giving him more steel plating. I do like the contrast with the angel wings though, it also helps drive home how other-worldly it's supposed to be, I'm very concerned that it not look like something that could have been produced by a Dark Mechanicus in a lab. Anyway, substantial green-stuffing left to go.

Now with the more metallic parts:
Also working on an Acothyst for the Commorragh project.
I was also lucky enough to snag one of the Alien Commander models. The plan is that he'll be part of an advance missionary/ ambassadorial team that maps out potential area for the Tau to advance to spread the greater good, mapping out civilizations that are either ripe to be absorbed by them or need to be conquered by force. This guy has obviously had some contact with tyranids. The explanation for his martial prowess is that the group he was part of encountered a species with a highly evolved consciousness who were under siege by a small tyranid splinter fleet. Tau intervention saved the civilization and they were brought into the Tau empire. As their contribution to expanding the greater good, one of their greatest warriors merged their consciousness with this model to become part of the advance team (the civilization is anchored to its home system, I'll post more when there are rules).

Maybe the part rested between his shoulder blades, but they do add a certain drama to the model.
The iron angel is shaping up to be another nicely twisted looking model.
Maybe a teeny bit excessive on the nid parts.
The Iron Maw is cool, but you shouldn't have organic-inorganic-organic in his right leg. I know it's Chaos, but it repels the credibility.
The use of the Fabius Bile torso, however, is pure genius!
R.
The Acothyst looks like it will turn out well.
With regards to the nid parts, the shoulder plates look really good. But the warrior heads look a bit excessive, and a bit small. For warrior heads, they should be about twice that size and may even need to be a bit bigger to be gaunt heads.
Quote from: precinctomega on February 06, 2011, 07:22:08 PMThe use of the Fabius Bile torso, however, is pure genius!
Agreed, I couldn't figure out what on earth you'd used there. Looks like a great basis.
Tragically I lost that Archon claw-hand... its a lovely piece.
The Acothyst looks great even at this WIP stage. I like the look of the mask already!
Personally I'd go less with the Nid bits on the Tau - a few fangs on chains would be sufficient to give the look without bolting stuff all over him in my view

Actually, I think that with some clever green-stuffing, it could be made to look 'believable'. If you green-stuffed organic veins and arteries, complete with hair-like capillaries and lymph nodes on the outside of the bionic (to feed the foot, I suppose...) then it would add an extra level of gribbly horror to the model. However, such a look would probably be a bit of a hassle to pull off convincingly, as it would require careful sculpting and painting to completely 'sell' what it's supposed to be.
So, if you feel confident, give it a try. Worst case scenario - you scrape it off and go with a robofoot. :P
On the subject of the tyranid parts - I think the one between his shoulder blades, coming up behind his head is just a little bit much. the parts on his shoulder, however, are a nice touch.
to be honest i think less is more with the tyranid parts the shoulder guard is a inspired idea that i feel maybe was taken to far with the heads on his back and hand, however i do love your Acothyst and Iron Angel.

That's the plan as of right now. It will be one of the more ambitious projects I've undertaken so we'll see how it turns out. As you said, worst case scenario is scraping it off and starting again.
As for the Tau, as the general consensus is that less is more (which I was leaning toward) I've already knocked off the heads. While I do like the idea of a tyranid head-shield I think I'll try and dig up something more interesting. I'm keeping the shoulder pad, throwing a tyranid fang hanging off the back as a "knife" and may subtly place some smaller trophies from different races to show the variety of species he has fought (and to reinforce the more feral 'other' in his head).
As for the Acothyst, I was staring at Bile's torso one day and thought, I wish I could have a character like that at 54mm. One day it just clicked after seeing multiple space marine torso's used to great effect as carapace armor for more slender characters that perhaps the torso was the right scale. I held it up to a few 54mm minis and lo and behold, it was a near perfect fit!

I tried that myself on my D-99 veteran, you'd be surprised how fat 28mm tyranid scythes actually are! I couldn't get anything to look convincing. I did find, however, on the genestealer sprue, there is a 'dead' genestealer skull that I drilled some holes in and hung from his belt that looked pretty authentic.
You have far too many works in progress. ;D
I wish you would finish something. All the models in this thread look interesting, and I would very much like to see them completed.

I'd say green stuffing some ligaments around the mechanics between the organic areas a'la Soulgrinder would be a good solution to this.

You're right, I get hung up on 2 things: painting and bases. As of right now this is the first day I've gotten "off" (aka working from home) in a loooong time. Work is insane at the moment, but I am planning to save some cash to go out and get some good paint a some basing supplies before sitting down for a marathon of basing/painting, but that'll have to wait until real life slows down.
Until then, I managed to lock myself in a room and do a little work today. I won't say I got a ton done, but I decided to post some pics before I do some GSing.
Here's an update on the Angel of Iron/Iron Maw, first, his HUGE iron weapon! Also, I settled on using the LoC wings on him as I loved the contrast between the crude mechanics, bestial daemonic parts and the pretty feathery wings.
His face, which is hard to see detail-wise, but you see what I'm going for. The nose is just basically like an ork nose with one nostril. Very basic, but it works (and it got the slannesh symbol out of there).
Also wasn't loving the left hand, so I gave him this instead:
Now this next guy is new. I know, I know, I shouldn't do anything new before the old stuff is done, but when I trimmed the hand off of the ork arm for the Angel of Iron/Iron Maw and was suddenly inspired to attached the orky pistol hand, which naturally had to go with the torso and fit well with the spare breacher bit lying around. From there it was just a matter of slapping it on a set of legs. I'll find a head some day...

And last but not least, here's a preview of my next steps on the Necron Lord. As a point of principal I do want to explain that this Lord (currently dubbed "The Architect") is basically a Bronze Level Lord charged mostly with upkeep and expansion of the empire and the sole survivor after a race the Necrons were killing unleashed a lethal virus that consumes matter at a molecular level. This Lord survived by merging a resurrection orb with his chest and (after centuries of slumber) has reawakened to try and slowly rebuild the empire. I'm thinking that he'll have a small following of Mechincus who revere him as a God, seems like a reasonable plot device (those are just the cliff notes, when the model is closer to completion I'll write it up fully to be torn down :) )
The use of Fabius Bile is inspired. I like how many projects you have on the go... its reassuring to know its not just me.
The idea behind the alien commander model is good but the execution needs a bit more thought IMO. The trophies are nice but I think there are too many at the moment and need to be better integrated into the composition. I like the shoulder spikes and the warrior-head gauntlet, the back piece looks odd though. Add some GS straps to the gauntlet and I think you're on to a winner there!
Let's see if this advanced WIP of a Necron Lord gets people talking!
First the weapon:
Lengthy Disclaimer on the body: The arms aren't glued and will be fitted much closer to the torso in reality. I'm up in the air with the spinal piece as well, as much as I want to make my own rather than using the stock one I dunno if I can pull it off well (it will be physically connected to the back, probably with poor GS work). Clearly looking at the head tacked on there I need to shorten the neck. I wanted a longer Egyptian one but it's a little ridiculous. The other thing up in the air is the use of the 40K scale head. It seems to work, though I'll probably finish the scratch built one I'm working on just for comparison. Also, I plan to sand down the cloak and ad a thin layer of GS along with guitar wire protruding through to round it all off.

Given all of your disclaimers he's going to look hella cool! I quite like the small head and the protruding spine tbh. The robe legs are cool but I don't like the arms at all. There must be something roboty you could use?

Now that that's out of the way, I had my first day off in quite some time (actually got a few in a row so this should be exciting!) and did some work on the Necron Lord and spruced up Gav's techpriest. Less talk, more pics:

His right arm, hopefully this eases fears that the robes will make him less Necrony:

Necron Lord is looking better and better, the weapon just screams necrontyr. keep it up and enjoy the break!
I've been doing some more extensive conversions lately so I decided to do something simple with mostly plastic. Then I got a little carried away, anyway, here's the hyper-violent barghesi.

It's a Lattarang Stripgun (rules here http://www.darkmagenta.co.uk/articles/Things%20that%20Dwell%20in%20Darkness.pdf), I like the idea of a drugged up beast charging forward, carving armor off of his enemies and then hitting them with a giant buzzsaw.

Honestly, I'm not a massive fan of the arms for the necron lord, but as I cant offer an alternative.... I'm sure they will look great painted anyway, really great model.

Am I wrong if I say that the necron pose is lightly inspired by the warmachine cryx lich lord Asphyxious ????

Looks like you found your spawn box judging by the other thread and I'm glad I could bring the strip gun to life!

He wasn't initially, but I was aware of the cryx line which looked like Necrons. Ultimately I ended up with a pic of Asphyxious while I was sculpting the robes because he had the look I wanted, so good catch!
Anyway, I've been working with a lot of GS and in the down time I've finished construction of "The Architect" Necron Lord! Very excited, I still need to tidy up a few bits and do the base but for all intents and purposes the model is finished beyond painting. The one major bit I'm fretting about is whether or not to add necron doo-dads to his head to give him a sort-of crown (I was just going to do three pieces of cut plasticard that looked like the bits on the ends of his wirey claws).
Anywho, those who were against the robed sleeves will be happy, here he is!

Loving the Staff!
Although I have to admit when I first saw him I assumed the mechandrity/tentically things were trailing behind him! Oops.
I also really like the GS robes, especially the tearing.
Can't wait to see him/her/it painted.
He looks incredibly good. I love how all the parts fit together so well.
Really glad you didn't go with the sleeves those arms are fantastic! Really show of your skills. Looks awesome all over really cannot complain a bit :)

So a couple days ago I picked up some basing materials and have been on my way. I'm planning to pick up some paints today or tomorrow, do some undercoating and get the wet palette set up so watch out, I may have actual non-WIPs soon (goodness, I'd have to start a new thread in which I actually complete projects...)
Anyway, here's some other stuff I've been working on in the mean time. Some of it is rather old but I'd been holding out until certain articles were finished but I figured what the heck, why not post them now.
Dark Eldar Pain Thief (giving another plug for the Talos, the face masks are great! This should also give you a sense of scale, as an fyi I don't think there's a head in the range that the masks will fit over naturally, I tried with Severina/Sevora and while it wouldn't require too much filing it definite doesn't fit naturally):
