Title: Few Character Ideas
Post by: Stormgrad on October 09, 2010, 01:02:32 PM
Im going to use this thread to post ideas for characters including background stats and equipment ill be putting the modelling conversion ideas in this thread http://www.the-conclave.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=1083.0

First off we start with my arbites/crusader/accolyte conversion idea

Inquisitorial Accolyte Tobias Drachenfel

Tobias was an orphan on the planet of Methalor in the segementum pacificus, His father having died in the line of duty while serving as a Judge with the Adeptus Arbites. Tobias was placed under the care of the Scholo Progenium and was sent to the world of Macharia to be trained to join the Arbites like his father before him, While there he met  Drill Abbot  Fabium Reichstag the combat master at the Schola, It was discovered that Tobias was a talented Swordsman with a natural speed.  Although a tough time for anyone he looks back at his time at the Schola with fondness and upon leaving he was sent back to Methalor and placed in the 3rd Precinct of the Adeptus Arbites. For the most part his life was fairly average, However when Inquisitor Airik Drachenfel arrived to investigate a heretical cult in the primary hive Tobias was assigned to assist the Inquisitor to Tobias's Suprise Abbot Reichstag was amongst the Inquisitors Retinue.
The group followed the cult into the lower levels of the hive and uncovered an old imperial shrine that had been converted and used by the chaos cultists. They then went back to the precinct house and Tobias rounded up all the available Arbiters and then with Inquisitor Drachenfel and Abbot Reichstag lead a strike on the Shrine. Impressed with Tobias's Investigatory and martial skills Inquisitor Drachenfel Invited him to stay on his staff then Tobias's Real training began

There's not a lot of background to critique, but there is one thing I'm going to call you on. Arbites never serve on their home planet - their loyalty should be only to the Emperor, not the planet.
(I'd also say your writing style has a few problems about how it breaks down into sentences - too many "and"s, as well as some missing sentence breaks. This isn't comment on its content, but it's worth considering that problems in writing style can reduce the immersiveness of a background.)

Also, bear in mind, Deflect Shot can only be used with power or force weapons. As it is, he cannot use his only skill.

well im going to rework the background i like the idea of keeping the arbites in there i feel that arbites officers make good acolytes as they already come from an investigative background, as well as weilding a sword basically cos im really liking that idea for the model with the sword raised high him ready to strike. im also fine with the stats (except deflect shot which is as you said nigh on useless). I also want to keep the link to the drill abbot character that i plan on having as id like to keep the warband interlinked (the abbot maybe bringing the potential arbiter to the Inquisitors attention while at the schola and keeping an eye on him to see how he seasoned in the harsh reality of the imperium of man before considering him as a potential acolyte)

So give me abit and ill have abit more in regards to this characters new and improved bio

Interestingly, that Arbites policy may have its roots in actual Garda policy in Ireland - in theory, no Garda should ever serve in their home county. In practice, a lot of Dublin Gardai end up in Dublin, but it does have a third of the population. The reasoning was exactly the same as that of the Arbites...

Don't let me stop you. The only issue I had with that was that he was serving on his home planet, which isn't in keeping with the background.

I can see no real need for him to work on his home planet, so the easy fix is to just to change it so that he was either born or working on a different world.

QuoteI'm also fine with the stats (except deflect shot which is as you said nigh on useless).
Depending on your game "power level" there are a few things I might change.
Were it one of my characters, I'd have a lower S, and if he's not the warband leader, I'd probably also drop his I to a Spd 4 value. As far as the falchion and its strength requirement - as I use more conservative stats than the rulebook, I also relax that kind of requirement a bit.

Entirely depends on how you play of course.

QuoteI also want to keep the link to the drill abbot character that I plan on having as I'd like to keep the warband interlinked
You can, but an Inquisitor will often pick up people who have no prior relation to anyone else in their entourage.

Usually, I'll arrange a warband so sometimes someone was picked up on a recommendation, or two/three people who knew each other beforehand were recruited at the same time - but there will always be "outsiders" and separate groups involved.
But part of the thing behind an Inquisitor's entourage is that it usually comes from eclectic backgrounds and has to learn how to mesh together as one.

well if you follow the link at the top of the thread over to my other post, you will see that currently i dont actually play and am looking to break into inquisitor as a way of getting back into modelling and wargaming. due to the small amount of models needed and the larger scale i figured it would be a fun modelling project and easy to get a warband together (you only need one model to play)

So Advice on stats is welcome as i wouldnt want to be too Over powered, the only reason for the S being that high is for the falchion so maybe lower it and just use a regular sword two handed.

As for the link i imagine that as they would be from the same sub sector they would of crossed path at the schola progenium in the back of my mind the Inquisitor leader of this warband has been pulling the strings since the start placing the drill abbot at the schola and having him look out for a potential heir to his legacy. Not all the characters in this warband will be linked i have an idea for a gaurd vetran (i was thinking of using the pathfinder stats as a start) for a praetorian sharpshooter to add some ranged firepower to the group.

Anyway had a busy few days and am now re writing the background of the accolyte/crusader Character

Appologies for the double post ive decided to do it so that this can have a slot all on its own anyway tell me what you think

Inquisitorial Accolyte Tobias Drachenfel

Tobias was the son of a retired arbites judge and the daughter of a ruling noble on the hive world of Methalor and began his education at an early age ranging from Administration to tactics and the Law. Tobias had a strong love for the law and buried his head in the lex imperialis at every oppurtunity. His father once wrote in his journal that "Tobias had a strong sense of justice of Right from wrong."

Sometime after Tobias's 12th birthday there was a revolt led by denizens of the underhive,  Alot of the Noble family's suffered losses. Tobias's Father took command of the local Arbiters and tried to defend the upper hive but sadly to no avail the Arbiters where overun and Tobias's father killed. The hivers rampaged through the upper hive burning everything in there wake the upper hive burned for a week and when order was restored by the adeptus arbites and the PDF there was nothing left of the former oppulance of Tobias's Home.

Searches of the upper hive revealed a solid vault from inside they heard yelps and screams guardsmen brought las cutters and cut through the door. When the last cut was made and the door fell away a small boy threw himself out and into the arms of the nearest guardsman. Tobias had rounded up all the children and locked themselves in the vault to wait out the revolt.

As a Reward for his quick thinking and in honor of the service his father performed as a Judge and in defence of the upper hive Tobias was sent to Macharia to the Schola progenium. Like all children in the Schola he was given a broad education Including combat training. Here it was discovered that Tobias excelled with a sword adopting a two handed fighting style, This brought him to the attention of the Schola's combat master Father Reichstag.

Along with his skill with the sword he found a natural affinity for the Law and was soon ear marked to enter the adeptus arbites. After he finished his training he was based at the 6th precinct of Guryan Prime on the world of Guryan and made a name of himself as a able investigator and law bringer. After almost a quater of a centuary he began an investigation into a imperial cult, Inquisitor Airik Stormgrad was also investigating the cult.

Airik and Tobias eventually crossed paths and Airik was impressed by the Arbitrator's investigative skill, Father Reichstag was a member of Inquisitor Stormgrad's Party and suggested working with the Arbitrator who he remembered from his time at the Schola Progenium. Together they uncovered a plot to overthrow goverment of Guryan and when it came time to take the fight to the cults leader Tobias was at the forefront of a squad of arbitrators in the thickest fighting.

After the investigations conclusion and the heretics where charged and prosecuted Inquisitor stormgrad offered Tobias a place on his staff, after accepting the position Tobias's real training began and eventually he became Airiks acolyte it was at this Time that Tobias discovered that Reischstag had sent his file to Inquisitor stormgrad and Stormgrad had kept a close eye on his progression and was hand picked to be Airiks successor.

Whilst I realize that Drachenfel is, necessarily, a popular name in Warhammer-related narrative gaming, have I seen this or a related character in an illustration on deviantArt, by any chance?

There is an articlei co-wrote floating about somewhere. I think it's in marco's compendium. I'll try and get you a link. It's on acolytes and other =][= apprentices. Some of the concepts in it might suit you.especially the entry on deductive.
