Title: GW Dark Eldar beasts
Post by: Heroka Vendile on February 16, 2011, 01:35:43 PM
The new beast models have been unveiled by GW. The Khymera are basically a Warp Beast update, while the Clawed Fiend brings a creature first glimpsed in the 3rd edition rulebook into model form for the first time. Unfortunately all are individual metal blister packs. There's also the Razorwing Flock, but I see that having less inquisitor potential than any of these.

Khymera 1 (http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?catId=cat440160a&prodId=prod1140015a) £8.70

Clawed Fiend (http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?catId=cat440160a&prodId=prod1140028a) £13.80

The Clawed Fiend seems like it might have some use, maybe as a rogue mutant on a killing spree

Plenty of opportunities on all of these (I also think the Razorwings could be used for familiars or the like). They're actually some of the best 'beast' figures GW have put out (historically they've been largely pretty poor).

I see the razorwings having plenty of utility as roaming beasts, a bit like the LOTR bat swarms.

The clawed fiend is just crying out for use in INQ, though.  Very menacing, even at 54mm, I should think.

Every time I see Games Workshop prices these days it staggers me.

So true Kallidor...

The razorwings could be easily used as familiars or roaming beasts.
Also, it wouldn't take much conversion to turn the clawed fiend into a 54mm werewolf. Any idea of how big it is?

That's exactly what I thought when I first saw it, only I rather like the multi-eyed look. Who ever said lycanthropy was restricted to humans after all?!

Going off the base I would estimate the Clawed Fiend to stand roughly 50mm high from the bottom of the rubble to the top of the mane/neck.

I'm actually wondering about putting the head of the Clawed Fiend onto a Blood Bowl Ogre (or even an Ogryn)...

So, the Clawed fiend has 6 eyes, that's fine... but why does it have 6 nipples?

... because two is actually quite unusual? Yeah, primates, goats and sheep may have 2, but cows have 4, cats and dogs have 8 (although some dogs have 10), and pigs have 18.

I wonder if the female of the species is easy to please in bed...especially if you play the piano.

Having just finished watching resident evil ( I am aware of what time it is)

The fiends look like licktors (With arms)

You disappoint me, PO, I would have thought you would have recognised a Red Dwarf reference when you saw one :p

For those of us curious about sizing, perhaps this image (http://www.games-workshop.com/MEDIA_CustomProductCatalog/m1690061a_Blog160211_2_XL.jpg) might help?

Certainly looks like it'd fit well into 54mm gaming.

I'd prefer to extrapolate from the known 40mm base size:

Each square is 10mm to the side. So about 45mm up to shoulder level (48 if you count the wild hair) not including the base.
Smaller than most Inquisitor models, but not impossibly small (sort of Chimpanzee size/proportions, excepting the tail). Nothing wrong with that - imagine an alien chimpanzee with inhuman speed, strength and very sharp claws, and you could certainly get your players worried about it. Particularly if you inflicted hit penalties for its small size and speed.

Also, the head and arms are massive compared to the body, making it useful for mutants and chaos-possessed horrors.

I bought the Clawed Fiend today and it's quite a nice model. It comes in four pieces - the main body, arm and head, the outstretched arm, one of the legs, and finally the tail. It's not a bad model, and with plastic dire wolves (etc.) you could certainly make a 54mm "Wolfman".

We'll see what's left of mine after I've sawed the head off...

Kered suggests that maybe you could convert a jokero out of the sufficiently ape like clawed fiend.

Huh, that's an idea that wouldn't have occurred to me. Not a bad one, though. GW's 'What's New Today' (http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/content/blogPost.jsp?aId=15900024a) has Jes Goodwin talking about the Donorian Clawed Fiend (with an excellent picture) and the ape inspiration that led him to the design.

Note that chimpanzees already have above-average (compared to a human) strength - IIRC, the average chimp is on a similar level to a strength-trained human, eg, an Olympian of some kind.

Bring the claws, teeth and tail (which immediately made me think of Aliens) into it and you've got quite a nasty little beasty.

Hey guys, I've bought the Fiend for my INQ28 stuff, but I figured some of you might appreciate a size comparison.

Big chimpanzee...

@Molotov:

Definitely great size-wise. I might want one or two of those.

. . .

Somehow there's something funny about that last photo. Robed guy seems to be screaming in outrage and surprise at the fiend.  :P
