Title: ranking system
Post by: Inquisitor Octavian Lars on March 09, 2011, 07:01:13 PM
I know i'm still an initiate, but i have worked out how to advance your rank for all you newbies out there.
Initiate 0-50 posts
Interogator 51-100
Inquisitor 101-200
Inquisitor lord 201-500
Grand inquisitor lord 501+

... Er, yeah. Post counts and rankings were actually deliberately removed from the main forum (they're only on member pages and member lists) because a lot of people put too much importance on them.

Looking at the lists, I'm actually the top poster (with about 1600 posts), but having written more posts doesn't inherently make my opinions better than those of a total newcomer to the forums. I am as vulnerable as anyone else to writing total piffle or a post that doesn't even end prope

If you want to know, then fine - but you shouldn't think of it as progress. One person with a thousand posts of "Cool idea"  is worth a lot less to the forum than someone with a hundred well thought out and thought provoking posts.

Anyway, I guess I'm slightly fed up of seeing "These are what the forum ranks are" posts on other forums. One forum I moderate even has them pinned at the top of the Forum Related section and we still get someone posting such a thread every few weeks. Most of the users don't even care.
It was worse before we started introducing a week's suspension for anyone who started such threads (the mods got fed up enough to start grouping it under "Spamming the forum").

I would add that you'll see that some members (*ahem*) have custom titles.  These are awarded for merit and, whilst they don't confer any authority (except for the Admins), they're a bit like being an Inquisitor Lord rather than an Inquisitor.

I'd also add that this is different to a user's personal text, which (I think) any user can set in their profile.

In the absence of a custom title of my own (apparently, I am without merit :P), I choose to use my personal text as a faux version - corresponding to my somewhat randomly assigned role maintaining the archive of all the old articles - but you can also choose to use it for odd snippets, like Kaled does; in this case, an excerpt from Jabberwocky.

You can in fact find out interesting things in the Profile  - Show Stats section. I was, at least for a while, the 3rd biggest starter of new threads. I'm kinda proud of that... [Edit]woops, not sure where I found that, but I did indeed find it somewhere... Can someone help me on that?[Edit]

But yeah, Charax barely posts on the current Conclave, but I will still look forward to reading any of his posts. Not like that meritless blabbermouth Skoll...  ;D

It's at the bottom of the main forum page, the "More Stats" link in the "Forum Stats" section.

This is beginning to get silly.
