Title: GWs DE Grotesque (now with great conversion idea) & TK Ushabti
Post by: Heroka Vendile on May 26, 2011, 01:38:37 PM
So aside from a number of the Finecast models being more expensive than their metal predecessors, this upcoming release just caught my eye.
Very much the perfect size for Inquisitor and cheaper than we're used to with most 54mm equivalents, resin or metal (Russian plastics aside).

Also coming soon are the 3-in-a-box Ushabti (http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?catId=cat440004a&prodId=prod1230026a), now in resin, as well as a new variant separate box set with giant bows. I've always liked these models and thought they would be a nifty basis for some cool conversions - and they actually cost less (at £30) now as a boxset than the metals were individually (IIRC).

As much as everyon has been saying about the expense of GW products, I love the new dark eldar models enough that I want a dark eldar army :P

Think will have to order the grotesque to go with my other large dark eldar purchases for Inq conversion!

is the Grotesque really the perfect size? If yes, it'd be a great base (although I hate to work with resin).

well that is a 40mm base he comes with, but sure while the legs might be a bit on the short side, with anything that deformed, I don't think anyone will care in the slightest.

i wonder how that would work with the talos, the two kits could probably be combined for super duper chaos/archo flagelant goodness

Too bad they're resin, I don't really know the material yet so I propably won't get them. The new Dark Eldar range has some very nice models but the new tomb kings have even nicer models.

A mere half the size of the hands.  Should have a top heavy rule I guess.

I was pleasantly surprised to see ushabti actually becoming more affordable.  They're a little small for 54mm, but could well pass for a diminutive alien race that has been somehow servitorised or 'enhanced' (a dubious process according to the inquisition, naturally).

So this is a slightly convoluted reason to resurrect this thread, but if figured it was preferable to creating a new one.

So I just stumbled across this thread on WIP Forum (http://z11.invisionfree.com/Work_In_Progress/index.php?showtopic=17755), which features 40k conversions for grotesques made using face masks and weapons from the Talos/Cronos plastic kit and the bodies and legs of Privater Press' Everblight Warspears (http://privateerpress.com/hordes/gallery/legion-of-everblight/units/legion-of-everblight-warspears-unit) from the Hordes range.

A taking scale into account, making the same conversions as LuckyNo.5 on WIP makes for some excellent looking INQ DE Wracks - the perfect compliment to anyone's Haemonculus and a nice alternative to using the single GW Grotesque in the OP.

example image of the conversions on WIP below for those too lazy to click the link.

I had seen those grotesque conversions Heroka and thought the same thing. That said I haven't seen a scale shot. With the size of the helmet relative to the models it looks like they may be a tad short. While this wouldn't be a problem in general as characters come in all shapes and sizes I feel like a diminutive but ripped wrack would be kind of sad looking. A short wrack that had a sort of wretched, hunched look would be great, but if these models are as short as I think they are then I could see them looking a little ridiculous (though it appears as though the legs are in an ideal position to be cut and extended, which could well alleviate any problems).

Anyway, definitely interested if anyone has these models to see what a scale shot looks like.

I don't have the Warspears at the moment, but I do have a lot from the line.   I would expect them to be too small to represent anything other than smaller characters.
