Title: Gav's Updates
Post by: greenstuff_gav on May 26, 2011, 09:53:27 PM
so, i've been quiet recently for a variety of reasons so thought i'd throw a few updates into one thread :)

starting with work on The Dark Angel (http://www.the-conclave.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=632.0)...
i've gone for a magnetised head; a Dark Angel style Y scarred into the cheek (in Deathwing there was one on each cheek) and a hair braid :)
he's got a helmet to wear and as mentioned in the thread, a serf to carry it :D

here's the Serf;
based off a Bronze Age (http://www.bronzeagemin.com/miniatures_html/54MM/54mm%20generics/54mm-Generics.htm) armature, been following a scout-style armour :)
there's a magnet in the hands to allow him to "hold" the helmet :)

on a Random tangent©, work on The Mechanicus Sculpt (http://www.the-conclave.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=911.0);
Been stuck on the head, but a new technique based off A Tutorial I Seen (http://cdhm.org/tutorials/learn-to-sculpt-face-and-head.html); while not great, i'm happier with the head than i've been for a while :)

so, there's a slight update for you :)

wooo dark angel stuff! Him and  the serf looking fantastic, need to a big order for bronze age stuff!

The mechanicus looks up to your usual fantastic standard! Looking forward to more progress! Any casting potentials here btw?

well, the Dark Angel helmet and pad are moulded already ;)

i'm gonna try to make the serf castable and the mechanicus should be; assuming either look ok when finished  :-[

Gav, have a you got a simple non embossed right hand shoulder pad for the 54mm marine? I'm seriously considering trying to build a Carcharadon Astra marine as a character but I don't want to file off and rebuild all the detail.

I'd pay, obviously...

I would certainly be interested in serf (loving his back excellent work) and mechanicus mate. And assuming they look ok? based off your previous efforts (including the awesome salamander marine work) assuming is a pretty safe bet.

Ps need to meet up for a game before I go back to NW and accost Dave for them :P

i don't have a blank helmet + pad, a Dark Angel Helmet + Pad or a Salamander Helmet and Pad moulded up and people shouldn't PM me ;)

hey Shannow, any time my friend; either Briz, Triple Helix or Radstock ;)
plus i'll be driving upto the July Meetup should you want a lift again :D

Awesome job on the legs of the serf, love the idea.
Keep it coming

I love the look of the dak angel with his serf, the marine is suitably large and bulky which is shown very well by the presence of a serf.

The mechanicus looks very good as well, but somehow I get the idea that the legs are a bit short.

also, an update on Adept Liwets' Transportation Servitor :)

wow, that Space Marine is good, but that Servitor tops it by far!

The servitor is great, I love how he hunches and strains under his load.

Lookit the size of that sucker!

Nice work, Gav. :)  What're the bronze age dollies like to work with?

Good choice of head, I think, gives the guy a bit more personality.  Like the serf following him around too.

Transportation servitor looking good too, like the faceless look to him, and the way he's carrying far more that he should be able to were he not a servitor.

more work on the Serf :)

just about to add the headset :)

now, i've got two options here' finish him up and start painting or, if there's enough interest, rework the hands (cause they're rubbish; but contain magnets) to maybe be holding a pistol and reloading and get him cast up; would anyone want to buy one if i got him priced up?

The serf is looking better and better. His armour really looks like somewhat lighter scout armour.

I'd be interested in a serf Gav

I have a self imposed moratorium on purchasing any new models, but it just looks great.  I'd definitely buy one, especially at your always-reasonable prices.

so, wee update time :)

first up, Octus has more headwork done.. i still don't like her :(
(http://buildyourimagination.co.uk/minis/files/octus_03.JPG)

and the Serf is being reworked, getting close to completion :)
going for an arm-piece to match the marine one and some other details :)
some more tidying up to do and the pistol to finish; will try and sprue it onto the base tab :)

Really like that serf mate, a few of those I want for sure. Detail on the head is an especially nice touch.

I think octus' eyes are too large and nose too small perhaps?

Most defiantly sold

I'm liking the bolt pistol too gav, perhaps a weapons sprue in the offing ?

The serf looks fantastic, excited to see its final iteration.

I gotta say that I'm not a huge fan of the techpriest revision, largely because of the face. Trying to figure out what I don't like, maybe the eyes? The face comes off rather juvenile in a cartoonish way.

Sorry to be hypercritical, I'm just a huge fan of your sculpts and this one just seems a little off.

Actually, Octus' face looks a bit like an alien re-re (reference Clerks). I'm assuming the pistol on Octus is configured for a cross-draw? If not, it's oriented the wrong way. :( The face-guard looks a bit like the methane-shield for a Star Trek Benzite :P A thought: to fix some of the ... weird ... look on the face, why not try some implants/bionics? Get a 'drite to start wiggling out her ear, or summat.

Serf looks great :) Just need to sharpen up the edges a bit. They're both 54mm scale, or 28mm heroic?

The serf is just marvellous. Octus looks good as well, the haircut is nice but as the others already said, there is something with the face,

To my eye....

Her eyes are oversized, slightly too far up the head and lens shaped. To go back to a picture I used a while ago,  they're more like the left image here (a convex cross-section), rather than the more correct right:
... which also brings up another important point. On most people's faces, the inside corner of the eye is lower than the outside corner.

That's the main thing, but other things that could be taken into account is that one of these two has probably caused the other: The nose is short, and the lips large. (Also, there's no philtrum.)

I'd also say the lower cheeks are a bit too convex, but it's a bit hard to tell from those angles and I suppose it depends on how lean you want the face to look.

As a minor last point, her ears could also be a bit more prominent.

Some pointers

Also, one more note is that there should be approximately one eye's breadth in between the eyes. On this sculpt, the fact that they're so large has meant that they've ended up a little close together.

It's not a BIG mistake per se, and it's certainly one that could be covered up with the age-old "mutation" excuse, but I get the impression that you're aiming for something a little closer to 'perfection', so I'm being a harsher critic. ;)

Hang on... are those eyes ball bearings? If so, you're going to need much smaller ones (1mm is a reasonable size) if you're trying that technique.

thanks guys :)
pulled her head off and am resculpting :)

in the interim, i've got this far:
just about to sprue up the pistol, am trying to work out which method will be easiest and most cost effective to produce :)

it's been a while since i updated about the Serf  :-[

unfortunately, a few issues with dropping things delayed his moulding :P
but lookit THIS (http://buildyourimagination.co.uk/minis/files/serf_04.jpg)!

it's a bit ropey as i've moulded and cast these myself :P
but a lack of finances has hampered my ability to send him off for (semi)mass production :(
i plan on re-converting the hands to carry the Dark Angels' helmet and while i'm there i can tidy up that terrible flash :P
also means i'll have a spare pistol for a weapons pack... gotta decide if it's going to be a half dozen pistols or one of each of the bolt weapon types...

This! I probably speak for many people when I say how many bolt weapons we have lying around in our bits box, and the number of times we have used slick's revolver, jackson's laspistol and *that* stubber is bordering on the ridiculous. More interesting 'common' pistols please, and I'll put in an order for a half dozen packs ;)

The serf looks great though! To my untrained eye, the quality seems really good considering you cast it at home. Kudos!

and is considerably cheaper; if i have less'n 15 orders i'm pretty sure i can get away with charging less'n a tenner (with UK postage!) but can only produce one per day; that pistol needs extra curing time :(

i'll get some more angled pics as i'm not overly happy with a couple of the mould lines :P
