Title: FoxPhoenix's INQ28 (and Molotov tribute)
Post by: FoxPhoenix135 on June 07, 2011, 06:29:09 PM
Inspired by Molotov's INQ28 blog, I am finally confident enough in my painting abilities to attempt to start a similar blog. I am not too crazy in my conversion techniques, but I will post some of my more interesting kitbashes.

First up is my first warband: a witch hunter and his retinue.

Sorry for poor lighting, I'm working on a lightbox. As soon as I can, I'll repost better-lit pics.

Not a bad start. The Heavy Stubber's not a bad kitbash, but you need to get around the fact that it seems to be defying gravity. Giving it suspensors or the like may well help (at the moment it certainly looks like it weighs nothing!)

What other figures do you have planned?

Funny you ask that! I am working on a Mechanicus (possibly a Magos Biologis) Heretek and his retinue. I need to find my dullcote to knock the shine off him:

Next is his servitor warrior, which I am using an old Ral Partha figure to represent (I love this model!):

And last for the day, here is his hired assassin/merc (again a converted Ral Partha model):

BTW, the stubber guy has a strap holding up the stubber, probably hard to see in the photo. I'll retake the pic now that I found a second light source.

The freefloating ammunition box spoils the heavy stubbier for me. Otherwise nice collection, if a little over armed and armoured.

Loving the rap Partha based assassin model, very characterful with nice paint job. Tech priest is a little too direct 40k port for me, but the rest of collection is excellent!

I agree with Shannow - the servitor and the merc are awesome, the models that let the warband down a little are the ones that have been plucked straight from the 40k range. You should at least try and do a basic head or weapon swap to make the models uniquely your own, you'll feel a lot more pride towards them as a character!

Thanks for the compliments on the Ral-Partha models... I will keep in mind what you said about the 40k models. I will at least have the good grace not to post any more pics of 40k-ported models! Next thing I'm working on is an arbiter/PDF investigator of some type... Haven't figured out which yet. Right now I'm working on his cyber-mastiff, will post them both together when they are done!

Not done with their bases yet, but I couldn't wait to show them off (although why I am anxious to show them to anybody I dont know...):

As promised, the arbiter/security guard with a cyber mastiff.

Now they are fantastic! And only reinforce how much extra character non standard 28mm figures have. Where are the various bits sourced from?

Very nice work, what kind of bases are you going to go for?

Ok, here is the bits list for the guard:

IG Valkyrie pilot head
SM scout shotgun arms
Wargames Factory greatcoat shock trooper body
Chaos sword in scabbard with symbols filed off

Pretty simple!

The Cyber Mastiff is another Ral Partha model. I thought it fit the bill perfectly so I threw a coat of paint on it!

Working on a Rogue Trader?/Arms Smuggler now, thinking of making him a burn victim...

Ok, I have my arms smuggler completed! Here he is in all his glory:

I painted him to be a burn victim... Not sure if I pulled it off or not, but oh well. The combat shotgun is a combination of parts from a SM scout shotgun, a lasgun, and a bolter. I think it came out rather well!

Hey y'all, just a couple of direct 40k ports today... I'll post something more interesting when I get to photographing it!

I'm surprised no one else has asked about the terrain in the background.

Is that printed terrain?  I've been looking with interest at Wargames Vault and other sources for Western-themed paper terrain for a forthcoming Legends of the Old West campaign at my local club and would be very interested in hearing recommendations and advice from people who've built paper/card terrain from any of the various suppliers.

Love the enforcer and cybermastiff-thing, BTW, although the enforcer's helmet is a bit "pilot-y" (not surprising, given its source).  One of the door gunner heads from the Valk would have been better, I think.

Those are some very nice models. They are well painted, I must say that I especially like the mastiff, where is it from?

Sorry it took so long to reply fellas, but my mother-in-law was visiting so my personal time was reduced to zero! Now she is on the plane back home, I can get back into my groove.

@precinctomega:
The "terrain" is printed card, but they are only floor pieces to the FFG game DooM. It also comes with lots of nice 25mm models too, if you are looking for decent daemon proxies. I use the floor tiles for many different things, from the twisted confines of a ship interior to the hallways of an imperial laboratory. Good stuff, that.

@dolnikan:
The mastiff proxy is a Ral Partha model, now oop. It was a miniature in the Vor model line, called a Neo-soviet Rad Hound. In that game, communist scientists bolted an explosive device over the canine's eyes, pumped it up on steroids and growth enhancers, and controlled it via an electromagnetic leash transmitting to the collar. They would run waves of these dogs into enemy entrenched positions, using their drug-boosted speed and agility to evade fire. They would then detonate the dogs, completely destroying the entrenchments and clearing the way for the hordes of irradiated conscripts armed with archaic assault rifles!

I'll be getting around to painting something at some point today. Questions/comments are welcome!

Good stuff.  I love the Magos Biologis Combat Servitor model.
