Title: Eldar Heads for all?! NOW AVAILABLE TO BUY (see p2 for details)
Post by: axiom on July 04, 2011, 02:12:12 PM
Back in January I think, I showed off WIP sculpts by John Pickford of some Eldar heads in 54mm, with the intention of getting a set of 4 or 5 completed. Due to other sculpting committments (which I think pay more cash!), John and I put the project on hold temporaily, before agreeing a few weeks ago to limit the heads to finishing the two WIPs shown.

Anyway, I have now received the heads, and am exploring opportunities to get them cast up.

Some piccies:

Scale shot with the bare ranger head

Helmet with an integral rebreather on a Ranger figure

Psychic hood angry Eldar face, also on the Ranger

Time for your close-up Mr Angry! (note, the brown stuff is very shiney, hence all the strange highlights.

The neck join has be designed to sit neatly on the Ranger torso, complete with a little 'nub'.

I currently have two options - I can just glue these sculpted heads to my figures and leave it there, or I can pursue casting. Casting is obviously going to be cost dependent, and I need to find a caster who can get these done at a reasonable price point.

If I get these cast up, I would be interested to hear if anyone is interested in one or more sets (I'll be selling as a set of two, not individual heads - sorry), and what sort of ball park price would be interesting for you.

Cheers

Jon

I'm guessing from the stunning silence that there's no interest in getting casts of the heads. I suppose it's less hassle for me ;)

Feel free to post if you think otherwise!

personally, i think it's a great idea; i rather like the helmeted head :)
just don't think i have a use for 'em myself (but if they'm cheap may grab one :) ) ...

if you find a caster, let us know (especially who it is; Grey Matter are flaky at the mo :( ) further details :D

I would be interested, if these were cast, in investing in a set or two of these heads.

If you get them cast I'd be interested in a set or two depending on the price (definitely one as I can't imagine it being astronomical).

Excellent - that's enough of a response to look seriously at the casts. I'm waiting back on a price for resin casting - if anyone has any recommendations of casters, I'd love to hear them.

I'd take two sets of them if you do casts, they are great!

Update time!

OK, to date I've had one initial decent price, then silence for a fortnight, several not interested/don't have time, and plenty of no replies from my approaches to casters.

Does anyone have any suggestions of any companies / individuals who would provide a casting service?

Thanks

Jon

I like the look of the first 2 heads. Not so keen on the 3rd one.

Cheers

the 2nd 1 is the actual ranger head (IIRC) and yes I like it as well.

I lost mine... sniff...

Would you consider self casting? I know Marco's about to try it... Also, have you tried Troll Forged? they mostly do 28mm, but this should be of interest to them.

I like 'em both, and could see a space for them in the future. I have schemes, you see. Scheeeemes...

That said, an eldar showing rage? An emotion? He must be feeling lucky.

Yeah, the one in the middle is the actual GW head.

Never mind! Can't please everyone. The pics aren't entirely true to life because of the high gloss finish which I think knocks out some of the detail.

TF have been contacted (no reply as yet). I'd like to avoid self-casting to be honest - I don't really want to invest in the equipment for a one -off!

From what I can tell, its mostly the supplies - the box can be made from Lego, and a hair trimmer can be used in place of a vibrating table... And some art shops have small, cheapish (in the 20 euro region, in one in Dublin) resin casting kits for designers looking to make duplicates.

Hi all, the heads will be going out to be cast tomorrow. The quoted price will depend in the end on amount of resin used, but we're looking at something in between £3-4 for the pair plus postage. I'll be getting 20 sets cast initially and will confirm exact price ASAP.

For those of your who have shown interest, let me know how many you're likely to want and I'll reserve some sets for you.

Thanks

Jon

No problems, so far 10 pairs allocated, 10 pairs left (I can always up the casting number if there's an influx of orders!).

Heads went in the post today - I'll confirm price once I've heard back from the casters.

As many of you know, I've been spending most of my hobby time on Blood Bowl rather than Inquisitor recently and I came across this;
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/674003445/help-put-the-scotlings-team-miniatures-into-produc?ref=live

It struck me that this sort of idea might be a good way to produce some bits for Inquisitor. I haven't looked into the details, but something like Kickstarter could reduce the risk for whoever is casting some bits and might encourage more of these community projects.

Hello all, sorry for the lack of an update, but I've had a fortnight away.

The head casts have now been produced and are en route to me as we speak. Here's a shot of the casts (very nice they look too):

They will cost £3.30 per pair plus p&p (the same for any number of sets) posted in a small padded envelope:

UK 2nd class = £1.00
EU Airmail = £2.00
Rest of World Airmail = £2.50

If you would still like a pair, drop me a PM and I can send you the payment details. Paypal is preferred, but I'll take cheque (from UK guys) or you can even pick up in person if you're local to Nottingham.

EDIT: based on the expressions of interest plus some other guys off-forum I know 17 pairs would be wanted; I'll operate a first come first served basis but would consider a 2nd casting run if there's a huge interest.

EDIT: Now open for orders - the heads have been received,so please PM me if you want to buy some!

Hi all, so far I've only had one confirmed order for a set of heads. I've sent PMs to everyone who expressed an interest. Let me know if you want a pair. I'll be looking to start selling some sets on ebay next week to try and re-coup the casting costs so I can't guarantee any sets will be reserved.

Thanks :)
