Title: Tyranid Strangleweb Rules
Post by: Brother_Brimstone on November 03, 2011, 12:02:38 AM
Hey all, I was planning to make an ordo xenos inquisitor wielding a 'barbed strangler' tyranid weapon she'd torn off a foul creature and managed to keep alive. I was wondering how i might represent it in-game. It'll probably be her only (or at least her prime) weapon, so i wanted it to be nastier than a standard web-gun, and fluff wise it does sound a lot nastier than a standard webgun. I suppose my question  is, how would you go about representing it on board.

Current thoughts were that it fires as a normal gun, then hits d3 random locations and acts as a webber, from there, but with a 50% chance of doing d10, rather than d6 damage, representing the fact that this is a little xenos creature doing its very best to tear you to pieces, as opposed to an inanimate mass of sticky web, which happens to be tangling you up.

What do people think? Too powerful? Not powerful enough? Any and all input is appreciated.

Personally I would consider the Strangleweb to be more appropriate

The Barbed Strangler doesn't really ensnare people - the projectile doesn't live long enough for that, the seed pod hits a target, explodes into a mass of tendrils through accelerated growth, slashing and lacerating everything around it, then it dies. It's not trying to capture, it's trying to cause as much damage as possible over a wide area.

The Strangleweb is actually designed to capture live prey, so it fits more with the webber analogy (really, the Strangler isn't at all like a webber) and it has the advantage of being more human-portable.

Thanks for the advice. I think i'll go for that fluff-wise. There's also the bonus that there isn't to my knowledge, an official model of the Strangleweb, so i have more creative freedom in modelling it (my base model will be this: http://www.coolminiornot.com/shop/media/catalog/product/S/M/SMOG06_1.jpg which I already own, but I want to get to work on customising the gun to make it more tyranid-y)

Still, what do people think of the rules, both in terms of power balance and correspondance with fluff?

(thread renamed for accuracy)

the strangleweb had an official model, but it wasn't great

Fair enough. Well, considering that tyranid weapons are biological organisms, a healthy bit of variation is nothing out of the realms of believability...
