Title: Tech Magos - PO actually gets around to doing a mini, for a change...
Post by: precinctomega on September 18, 2009, 08:26:32 PM
This is actually a commission for a Conclaver who's doing some technical support on my website as a quid quo pro.  He gave me the original Navigator mini and asked me to turn it into a Tech-priest, loosely based on his character from our Dark Heresy campaign.

Here's the first WIP shot I did:

And here he is so far:

I'm actually proudest of the shading and highlighting on his coat at the back, but I'll try to show you that in the next WIP shots.  I had to do quite a lot of putty work on this guy, adding cogs to his chest and loincloth, and filling a lot of his back, which was all pockmarked and oxidized (making me fear for the mould).

His left hand is original, twisted through about 90degrees.  His right hand is from a second edition space marine.  His backpack is a combination of an Imperial Guard voxcaster, a hunter-killer missile and the radar dish from a Land Raider.  I drilled out his mouth and filled the space with guitar wire, which was fun but fiddly.

I'm particularly pleased with how the expressio on his face came out.  I used a Knarloc Green wash to give him an unhealthy pallor and that thing sticking out of his eye is a BFG bit.  I rather like the way it looks like it extends into his head.

:o Very nice! I was goingto use the Navigator for a Techpriest as well, but with a mechandrite(spelling?) beard; I'd better hurry up though, if the moulds going down the gurgler...

That is funny, I love the scanner, but I'm not so sure about the weapon (maybe I will be convinced when it is finished.)

Cool model Robey. I don't think that I've ever seen an AdMech made out of the navigator before either. Well done.

Certainly has the creepy ad-mech look about him.

I think the weapon adds to that somehow - it doesn't look like something he should be wielding

My thoughts exactly.

You know what it's like: you match parts and see how they inspire you.  It occurred to me that I'd never seen a power spear and that there are too many AdMech with axes.  The idea is to paint it with a weird "inner glow" lighting effect that should make it look more like a strange crystal perched atop a staff, with a bit of luck.

I like the pose, though.  He looks kid of static, but combined with his expression, it's saying "I'm going to --ing mess you up, because you just --ed with the wrong --ing Magos, pal".

Except, obviously, given the tubes, that would come out as "Em onga ng ss oo u', eos oo uss u'd if uh ong inf a'os, a'".

Anyway, a little update:

LMFAO love it
this ones an opinion divider mate, its a good mini, although im not sure on the pose too much.
the weapon is definately a good idea though, it adds that sense of im-not-allowed-this-but-who-gives-a-[EXCOMMUNICATE] sorta look.

I think it gives him a 'head bowed in prayer' sort of look, like he's invoking the machine spirit in his glowy-stabstick or entering into a trance.

I like that, it hadn't struck me until you said it but yeh that's a cool vibe for the AdMech. poised rather than inactive.

I really like your colour choices on this model. Great stuff.

The thoughtful, sinister, pose works well.  It adds a subtle menace just as effective in its own way as simple physical intimidation, and very much appropriate to a tech magos.

Nice use of the Astropath, though I notice a few vehicle and what I think is the Basilisk Gun support parts in the satilite thing. Looks cool in my opinion

Fantastic techpriest, there's a great sense of atmosphere to him.  Very Blanchian, if I might add.

Om nom nom.  ;D

The red and white robes look very good together.  Overall excellent converting and painting.

Nice work. I think the robes have always had those craters, I had to smooth the back on my Navis I'm pretty sure I got him around the time of release.

Very nice work Robey. An excellent conversion, and a great paint job (the painting on the robes in particular.)

I'm still not terribly keen on the weapon though. I think that it would have looked much better if the handle was ridged, or it had some sort of detail on the end.

I quite like that the weapon doesn't quite look right somehow - it adds to the sinister feel of the model.  That is a good face now I look at it - tough to get expression out of half a face, but he does look angry.
