I'm trying to get a jewelled effect on his left hand and bionic eye plate but it just keeps turning out like random blobs of colour (no real surprise there). Has anyone used any types of glitter, etc. to produce such an effect?

Inquisitor Jaryn Schenal looks very cool. I like the strong colours- ostentation is very Inquisiton in my opinion (or it can be, particularly for the Ordo Malleus in my experience).

One question is whether his eyes are done? You are clearly capable of painting realistic eyes with white and black (as per the Eldar chap) but Schenal's are bright blue, matching his robes. Is this a psychic manifestation or something like that? If so I might go for a paler blue like Ice blue (or whatever the modern equivalent is) to differentiate from his clothing.

This is a perennial problem for me. Since starting GW some 15 years ago I've been struggling to make gems etc look like anything more than blobs of random colour. The advent of the citadel washes helped me a lot. I generally mix white in with the base colour, give it an appropriate wash and then rehighlight with the smallest possible dot of white... sometimes it looks great, often it looks like I dropped the mini and that bit chipped... perseverance? unless anyone else has any tips.

Thanks Hadriel.

His eyes aren't done because I haven't decided how to finish them. The blue is supposed to be a representation of his psionic ability but it was more because I liked the idea of the bright blue eyes of the Fremen in Dune. I might make them brighter but my main decision was whether to give them black pupils or not.

He's going to be armed with a pair of lightsaber type weapons once I can find suitable plastic rods and his right hand. My priority is the hand but I'll be looking for the rod soon too.

I don't think I'll ever have the skill to use that technique on such small areas. I want his glove to look like it's made of (or covered in) lots of small different colored jewels so each individual jewel will be smaller than a knuckle or fingerbone. At the minute I'm thinking about using a thin coat of clear glue and sprinkling the finest glitter I can find on top whilst keeping the existing blobs underneath. Alternatively, I might repaint the two areas black and use my missus' glittery nail varnish if she can find a clear or black based one.

Missus' nail varnish won the day because I couldn't be bothered looking for glitter. It was a bit tricky to use, dries quick on the brush, goes jelly like on the mini and you need to use solvent to keep the brush clean.

I managed to keep the dark ridges between his fingers by using plain old chaos black over the top but drybrushing the nail polish is possible if you're quick enough and do dozens of coats (letting each one dry in between).

It needs bright light to bring it out and it changes colour with the light from red to purple to blue. Overall I'm pleased with the effect. Need to tidy him up a bit then I'll move on to his backpack and long rifle.

What a great solution to the problem. It looks fantastic. I might suggest seeing about varnishing it tho- as far as I know nail varnish chips quite easily? Maybe not on a mini now I think about it.

Just out of interest, is he meant to have an extra finger? I count five on the rifle's grip and presumably there's a thumb behind it as well.

Very astute Koval.

I greenstuffed the extra finger on and widened the glove so they would mate up properly. He's supposed to be a representation of The Prince in the Scarlet Robe from Moorcock's Swords trilogy, a fighter against chaos.

The only problem with varnishing is I don't want the rest of him to be shiny and I don't want to lose the shinyness of his jeweled parts.

Just varnish the bits you do want to be shiny. I always use brush on varnish rather than spray and regularly use different varnishes for different bits of a model - e.g. matt for flesh and cloth, satin for polished leather, gloss for gems and shiny shoes.

I'll keep that in mind guys, thanks. Are these varnishes you're talking about water based?

I use Humbrol varnishes that aren't water based - they're good though, I'd recommend them.
