Now I know you're all thinking 'what's going on, isn't he doing mainly 28mm these days?'
Yes and no. Yes in that I have a lot of 28mm minis to paint an a campaign to run. No in that I'll never love 28mm miniatures as much as making 54mm ones.
So here's progress on a character I started aeons ago. It's a 54mm version of Inquisitor Ramus, earlier in his career:

Half cloak idea stolen from Rob I think...
Excited to paint this up soon. Just gotta file down some GS once it's cured.

I recognise von Castellan's torso, and the right hand's probably from a Techmarine, but that's about it -- where's everything else from?
Von Castellan's legs, 2nd Ed Fire Dragon Meltagun... i think the head is the Slick Booster guy but not sold; the hair is throwing me :-[
pic from the back so we can see the cloak please :D

I know, right? The hair's put me in mind of
Sanguinius of all things.
Glad to be mysterious. Gav is along the right lines generally although you're wrong about the head... :) Koval the hand is indeed from a techmarine.
Perhaps those pictures you requested will clear things up a bit?

I'm off to work now... any glaring improvements required give me a shout. I might base coat him this evening!
yours mysteriously
A.
His gun looks ace, it suits perfectly.
You could put a pair of small antennae on his other toy to make it like a PKE meter (very handy for hunting demons).
Not a bad idea about the antennae, although my GW drill has finally died after many years of service and I can't bank roll a new one... perhaps I'll revisit the scanner in the future!
Here's Ramus after base coating. I've recently taken to overbrushing my minis in white or grey to pick out details at this stage. It gives me a clearer idea of the overall composition and highlights which areas are rougher than may be desired. I'm pretty happy as it stands and will look at putting some colours down this evening.

To put you out of your collective misery the head is actually from an Andrea miniature that was used as the basis from one of my first =][= minis on the Conclave that was. The visage is by no means an intentional likeness to Orlando Bloom in Kingdom of Heaven...
One of the easy cheats when making 54mm minis that I adhere too is using small details salvaged from 28mm plastic kits. My old chaos warband was full of carefully removed skulls and other insignia. I came across a sprue of weapons from the Grey Knights Terminators box (which is odd since I never owned any) and have taken lots of lovely baroque/ Blanchian details from there. The belt buckle is half of a sword pommel, the lock box on the left pauldron is stock from the set, the grenades and the book are likewise accessories from the GKs. I even fashioned him a rebreather (slung from his hip and potentially not pictured- I'll get a close up) from the front part of a GK helmet with a GS strap. This was inspired by the FW heresy style tank commander with the mohawk. Nice, angular and fuctional. Ideal for =][=. Other additions include a tactical marine ammo pouch (or half of one anyway) an =][= broach cut from the shoulder pad of a GK and some guitar wire to provide power for the scaner (as luck would have it its the same gauge as the original from the techmarine!)
Also I have revisited a concept from my Hunter character; namely a Kroot hound:

He's undergone a bit of bionic augmentation and has been given a more canine ear on the left of his head. I was trying to think of a
GrimDarkTM name for him but I think 'Spike' is probably appropriate given his appearance and status/ stature as more of a pet than an attack dog- he's not massive at 54mm scale.
As an aside and an IC question/ quandry- how does the imperium stand on indigenous or xenos fauna? It strikes me that any animal not originating on terra is potentially considered as xenos filth by some more hotheaded and puritanical Imperial citizens but on the other hand its interesting to think about the definition at which point a creature becomes a species intelligent enough to be a threat/ heretical.
I think the xenos hound is an appropriate companion but am I wrong? Maybe this will be the basis of further writings for a separate subforum... Actually I'll open the debate in the Dark Millenium. So responses there please!
Hope you like him! I was thinking of adding a collar but it already has a harness and the neck detailing is quite nice...
A.
kroot hound looks like fun, reminds me of one of my characters(hans) lizardy hunting beast based on a razordon, hasnt seen a game yet though :(
shouldnt every one have a giant hunting beast companion? if your answer is no then we really wont get on :P :)
have you thought about rules yet?
monodominants would probably shoot it on sight as they are nice like that, most others wouldnt mind too much especially as he has an important-ish owner
The fact that it is a xenos creature should not be a problem in my opinion, after all each time the Imperium encounters a new planet there are likely to be new beasts to be wiped out/domesticated/allowed to survive as appropriate. The grox for instance I doubt is Terran in origin, and the Mukaali (used by Tallarn rough riders) is certainly not from Terra.
I think the fact that these are non-sentient beasts as opposed to sentient aliens is what makes them ok for use as pets or domestic animals.
The fact it is a Kroot beast could cause problems for some Puritans, as (barring a few mercenaries) the Kroot race are officially aiding the Tau against humanity.
Other than that (and more on topic) nice models by the way, looking forward to seeing Ramus painted.

Correct, it hails from some place called Solomon.
Not to be confused, therefore, with the Beast of Solomon (either the Dark Heresy version, or anything theological).
Long time no ownership of a camera...

Proof that I'm making some SLOW progress.
You can see the 28mm equivalent in the background.
More soon.

Sooner than expected in fact:

V happy with how he's turned out. Less happy with the photography. Shame I got my DSLR and iPhone stolen...

model looks better with paint, especially the addition of facial hair
wheres his pet? :)
Glad you like him! The pet is to follow fairly shortly. Maybe some time this week. Not sure whether to pursue a traditional kronor hound scheme or go for something a bit different- I'm open to suggestions!
