It struck me that as pretty much every site/company/organisation has a facebook page, it was probably worth having an official forum one setup regardless of how much it actually gets used.

Well, whether or not there was an old page, having one should be quite useful for announcing events and the like to people who perhaps don't check the forum itself regularly.
