SUBJECT: 250-ia-observer-1;Vincent Ohl
Lord Inquisitor,
This communique is to respectfully inform you that Vincent Ohl, (herein after; subject 250-1) has been successfully evacuated from Kuhnslich IX. All efforts were made to ensure your involvement and the involvement of your most humble agents were kept from both 250-1 and the local authorities.
If you recall 250-1 was the young citizen taken in by the Adliger family, a middle ranking noble family of the Kuhnslich sector whom you suspected of possesing persuasive powers beyond that of a normal human.
A brief history: Son of the servant master of the Adliger family the subject should have looked forward to an honourable life in service to his noble masters, however at a young age he is reported as showing a distinctly un-imperial propensity for laziness, often making his peers perform his work tasks. This remained, for no good reason unpunished, even when other servants were flogged for regular inapropriate fraternisation with the subject.
By the age of seventeen years he had already secured himself the personal attaché to Gustaf, the third son of the lord and lady Adliger, though his tasks remained few and rarely completed by him.
The true discovery of his uncanny ability to render citizens more suggestible to his wishes came two years later, when accompanying Gustaf to his fathers hosting of the congressus nobilitae (see file 250-pl-politic-138:political structure; Kuhnslich sector) he interrupted the noble Lord Herzog, of a much higher ranked noble family, suggesting that Gustaf, still only in his 36th year would be better suited to take a seat in the chambers of commerce than the more experienced and higher ranking son of Lord Herzog himself.
This motion, although suggested by a servant in the face of the most powerful man in the sector, passed with a 32 – 7 majority, the seven nay votes being the lord and lady herzog, their son and the four Himmel family representatives (file 250-pl-politic-59:political family alliances; Kunhslich sector)
It was shortly after this event that I was ordered to maintain a closer watch on the family. I have since witnessed Gustaf ascend the ranks of nobilis, always aided by 250-1. Despite the constant efforts to waylay his rise to power by the Herzog family.
Taking the planetary governor seat of feral world Kuhnslich XVIII Gustaf, and through him, 250-1 began to establish their ...

...
The following is a brief description of the displacement of Gustaf from his seat of power and the inevitable flight of Gustaf and the subject from the Kuhnslich sector;
As mentioned in the previous three reports, the Herzog family attempts to undermine the Adliger family have grown more nefarious of late. After the failed poisoning and subsequent affiliations between V&G and their would be poisoner Mernylo (file 250-ct-mercenary-danger level;gamma) the Herzog method has become even more subversive.
The most recent congressus nobilitae saw a strong case put forward by the eldest Himmel son, most probably fuelled by the Herzog family, to suggest that Vincent, essentially still a servant, was granted more power than most nobles, and implied in no uncertain terms that he had more control over Gustafs planet that the noble himself.
Even with his, by now well practised, ability to get his own way he could not persuade a room full of nobles that this was not the case, indeed with his apparent enjoyment of the powers afforded to him and Gustafs family responsibilities this was an accurate description of the case.
Losing a planetary governor by unanimous vote left the Adliger family with a major power deficit little chance of returning to their prior position whilst harbouring an enemy of the ruling families. It was deemed best for all parties if Gustaf left the system in secrecy to avoid further troubles.
Forseeing this and a likely attempt to sabotage any attempts I procured the services of a trusted trading vessel to ferry the fugitives to a nearby system. There, posing as the ships chief cook I managed to feed trackers into the subject, as well as Gustaf and their two accomplices; Mernylo and Lövesz; daughter of the Adliger family gunsmith and a frequent 'companion' to subject 250-1.
In service of the God Emperor

Well done for getting through all that fluff

Vincent is right handed
Equipment: Decided when I get the model
Abilities: Suggestion: Cast on a targets he is aware of and can communicate with easily. The character makes a psychic test at difficulty 0 +5 per target beyond the first. If he passes then the targets become suggestible and the amount he passes by becomes a negative modifier to the targets' Wp for D3 turns for the purposes of persuading them. Any suggestible character will believe almost anything the caster suggests to him but can attempt to see sense by taking a Wp test modified as above.
Persuading must be done verbally, it takes actions accordingly & can be heard by other nearby characters. GMs should apply modifiers to tests if the target is particularly resistant to the issue (e.g. trying to persuade a preacher that the emperor isn't a god would be much more difficult).
Note: although a psyker Vincent has never recieved any formal training and so may not attempt to nullify a power even if it is directed at him.
For anyone who noticed the repeated Ghost in the Shell reference, thats a by product of my inability to think of names... I was watching gits while he was still nameless so for a long time he became simply 2501, and technically he still is...

The rest of the names followed from the germanic theme, they all mean something though I will have forgotten what by the time you ask me :p
Feedback appreciated, I will post the rest of the characters stats / fluff later
Good solid background and a good profile for the character. Plenty of potential for expanding the narrative as well, with both a scheming noble and the involvement of the inquisition.
He's a little lacking in defence though - I'd be tempted to add in a power along the lines of 'Not the face!' which dissuades attackers without having to persuade them.
[cry]Doesnt look like im getting any conclave love[/cry] so im gonna stick the rest of the warband stats up, not gonna put their fluff up yet though, im far too lazy to type and I have a test tomorrow which is, frankly, more important :p
Before I do, Myriad; hes meant to be a weak character, he relies on his more combat oriented comrades to do the whole fighting part. Hes definitely more of a lover than a fighter. If he looks underpowered when I play him I may give him a little boost but I enjoy my main character being the underdog.
I considered having a rule to the effect of anyone attempting to charge him had to pass a Wp test first (like fearsome but with Wp not Nv) but I figure its essentially the same as his suggestion power, he just needs to remember to suggest people dont hurt him. I may give it him back depending on how facesmashed he gets the first few times I try to play him.
Anyway:
Lövesh
WS BS S T I Wp Sg Nv Ld
41 73 61 53 65 63 45 67 42
Left handed
Abilities: Deadeye Shot, The Gunsmiths Daughter
The Gunsmiths Daughter: Lövesz has spent her entire life around guns & knows more about the construction, use & repair of weaponry than even a well travelled veteran – For the purposes of using, identifying or repairing any gun up to rare availability Lövesz counts as having double Sg (90), for legendary & unique guns she has 1.5*Sg (68). In campaign terms she is also able to repair jammed or damaged weapons provided they are not completely destroyed or new parts are unavailable.
Equipment: some kind of single shot hunting rifle. I will work out rules when Ive made the thing and have a better idea what it should be like. It will be made specifically for her etc *insert basic fluff reason for her having an old skool but still pretty boomblastic fantastic gun* so expect a special rule for it or some minor bonus to something :D
Gustaf Adliger
WS BS S T I Wp Sg Nv Ld
76 62 64 59 72 67 53 49 82
Handedness: Gustaf is left handed
Equipment: Adliger Family Greatsword
Abilities: Flamboyant, Daredevil
Flamboyant; As feint, however Gustafs first combat action (after the free attack if he charged) must be a feint.
Daredevil; As acrobatic & catfall, however if there is a more daring (read dangerous/stupid) path Gustaf must take a Wp test, with an appropriate modifier of the GM's discretion (e.g. -10 daring rooftop leap, -20 minefield obstacle course, -100 the previously uncompleted by any human or xenos obstacle course of doom Mk.III)
Adliger Family Greatsword; As a falchion, however, crafted from the finest materials at great expense the negative effects of the falchion only apply where a character of strength less than 50 rather than 75 use the weapon
Good, solid pair of characters there, interesting and threatening without being overpowered. Does Gustav not even have a laspistol as a sidearm?
I suppose rendering someone suggestible and saying don't hurt me is still only 2 actions - I had thought he might have a streamlined version for simply deflecting attackers, but actually based on the background he hasn't been personally attacked much.
Yeh im sure he will have some kind of gun, I really havent worked out anyones equipment beyond things that will be a major part of the model (i.e. Gustaf's sword, Lövesh's big gun)
I was thinking of giving Vincent some kind of flashbang or mini smoke grenades to help facilitate a good escape too, but again Im going to have to see the model first. Basically its gonna be a wysiwyg approach, since last time I wrote up equipment before I put it on the model it took me hours to find anything that even basically looked like what I needed and a fair while more to attach it appropriately :D
I like it, quite a bit. Lövesh I picture having a Sharps Rifle: http://www.shilohrifle.com/ (http://www.shilohrifle.com/)
A big calibre single shot breech loader.
We get a lot more interested in characters when there are models attached to them.

That is very simplistic tough. With her background she could make something far more advanced by herself. I suggest a autogun, with a polished wooden stock, would be an effective weapon, as well as 'old school' in that it isn't a lasgun/boltgun/needle gun etc. and it would suit her well. No chauvinism meant, but as a girl a lower recoil weapon would be preferable. And a custom autogun with expert upkeep and modification could be pretty good. I'd take the profile of Marco's support rifle, reduce the range to C, unless you model a long barreled gun, Increase the acc to +5, and reduce the Enc to 30.
I'm not convinced that acrobatic is appropriate for Gustaf. Could he really jump over an opponant in close combat?
I like Flamboyant though. But agree he'd carry a holdout laspistol or a needle pistol. He might have a digi weapon too.
I could see Vincent having to 'suggest' against some of the antics that Gustaf would otherwise get up to, He can't really afford to loose his master/pawn now can he...
I think the stats are all more or less spot on. They are both maybe tougher and stronger than I would have guessed but I can totaly believe that Gustaf would want to stay is shape and Vincent would 'suggest' that Lovesh stayed in shape too.
Lovesh may have a pretty high toughness looking back, and probably a high strength, though I figure she would come from a fairly physical stock of weapon smiths. Still not sure exactly what her guns gonna be, I like the look of the eldar rangers rifle... if I thought for a second I could be bothered to work out a way to get it off the backpack Id consider imperialifying it.
PO... stop bullying me :p Xmas money coming... then you all get to have a good chuckle at my (lack of) GS skills :p
Tbh the jumping over people in close combat part of acrobatic is something I havent used since my matrix moment... I had an acrobatic char once who thought it would be a good idea to do his silly jump then stabby stabby in the back... sadly he ran out of actions, and his opponent simply turned around and swatted him. We came to the conclusion that he probably tracked the acrobat through his jump and simply waited for him to land...
also its a silly ability that, lets face it, wouldnt work unless you were a) superfast (and that includes at falling... come on gravity) or b) fighting someone with the reaction speed of an odd sock... that is unless its meant to be some cool kung fu moment where you run up the enemy, kick them on the back of the head and land neatly behind them... in which case... but I digress
p.s. Where is a good place to get cheap GS/plasticard? GW does those little chunks of GS for a fortune but Ive never seen plasticard and there has to be some sensible alternative

Check out the modelling resources thread, there are links to places that sell both - Heresy for modelling putty and Transport Models for plasticard. Not sure they're necessarily the cheapest, but I've dealt with both on a number of occasions and would be happy to do so again.

No chauvinism meant, but as a girl a lower recoil weapon would be preferable.
Just as an Aside here, bigger calibre dosn't always mean more recoil, weight and size of rifle, and the shape of the round fired, affects the recoil felt. Small light pistols in .38 have much snappier more painful felt recoil than bigger weapons. Different rounds produce different durations of recoil, whether it is spread over a longer period of time also effects how the recoil feels.
Certainly yes, but an assault rifle (5.56) isn't going to be much lighter, if at all, than a single shot rifle with no gas parts, magazine or so forth, and the 'big calibre' rifle is going to be 7.62 equivalent minimum.
<Ballistics mode>
Due to conservation of momentum, Recoil can be calculated as follows:
VRifle = -(Vprojectile * Mprojectile + VPropellant * MPropellant)/MRifle
V of course being velocity, M being mass. VPropellant in a typical powder burning firearm is ~1200 m/s.
The Recoil energy (which is the important thing) is then calculated by:
(MRifle*VRifle2)/2
This therefore means that independent of other factors, any of the following increases recoil: Increasing projectile mass; Increasing projectile velocity; Increasing propellant mass. (The velocity of a given propellant is usually pretty constant).
Any of the following will reduce recoil: Increasing firearm mass; fitting an efficient muzzle brake (because this re-directs the propellant gases, changing their apparent velocity)... and believe it or not, fitting a silencer also reduces recoil (partly because it increases mass. Partly because it reduces the velocity of the gasses leaving the muzzle)
Still, increasing calibre without changing the rifle mass will increase recoil energy. And if we briefly consider propellant to be negligible, doubling projectile mass requires a fourfold increase in rifle mass to get the same recoil energy.
As a general rule therefore, a larger calibre, even though it will correlate to a larger rifle, will result in more recoil.
Of course, things are actually a little trickier than that. Moving parts within the weapon can increase (or decrease) the perceived recoil.
</ballistics mode>
Anyway, I think that's enough firearms physics for now.
I get home from a hard days university (not now, ive been out in town... id worry if uni finished at half one in the morn) thinking; no more maths, no more physics for a whole weekend... ooh I wonder what people think of my character... and Im greeted by kinetic energy and assorted velocities. Why do you all bully me so :p
marco is right about the recoil though, Im not a ballistics expert but I know my basic physics :D and dont worry its going to be a nice long, well designed heavy (ish) rifle.
Also I dont know if any of you have seen the kriss super V system (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f2kEg8rEPl8), which fires [EXCOMMUNICATE] big bullets (.45 cal) on full auto with next to no recoil thanks to something that (once you know how it works) seems like a fairly simple idea. It has a little counterweight infront of the stock which, with every shot, gets pushed around to counteract the recoil.
Anyway I figure come the 41st millennium someone with a damn well crafted custom built precision hunting rifle (insert more adjectives to make it sound good before the inevitable blandness of the final model when I realise Ive lost my bits box/modelling ability :p)
also with hindsight, Lovesh's T dropped by 15 to an altogether more feminine 53.
Quote from: Sneak on December 05, 2009, 01:45:35 AM...and Im greeted by kinetic energy and assorted velocities. Why do you all bully me so
Sorry about that. At times it's a bit hard to shut the ballistician in my head up.
Anyway, whatever you do, don't start talking about long range trajectories, or you'll really set me off. (Work recently has included low drag less lethal rounds and a subsonic projectile for punching through APC armour at long range.)
QuoteAlso I dont know if any of you have seen the kriss super V system (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f2kEg8rEPl8)...
The TDI Vector line is clever, but it obviously can't defeat the laws of motion. It can't reduce actual recoil energy, but it does make it easier to control that energy.
Either way, I prefer to keep things simple by having a centre of mass near the axis of the barrel, and a stock set behind the recoil. You then get straight recoil without muzzle rise issues.
It does mean that sights need to be set higher, but that's hardly the end of the world in most cases.
Anyway, I'll stop talking about firearms design now, or I'll likely start sending people into comas.
[fascinated] See this is the sort of interesting shiz I should do with my maths degree, not like all the boring buggers that want to be bigshot bankers. Im a dynamics geek at heart :D [/fascinated]
anyway, back on topic, whatever else happens Im going to give her a nice long rifle and recoil be damned :D
Im still trying to work out what to make the poisoner woman out of, though since I have no clue what shes about she may remain a background character for a while...
Have you looked at the Eolith line? Some models there that might be very suitable.
