Title: Cheap Parts Needed
Post by: Brother_Brimstone on February 28, 2010, 02:48:20 AM
As stated in the 1/35 thread, i bought the mauser earth guy, and now to complete the conversion, I need to give him a sword and a sniper rifle (the weapon is actually a converted autogun - one with a scope and laser sight attached). Seeing as I spent quite a lot on the model, and I don't have much spare cash, I was wondering if anyone could suggest a source from which I can get a sword  and sniper rifle/autogun (i don't mind buying an entire model with a either, as long as it isn't too costly).

Preferably could someone suggest something I could use which I might already have in my 40K bitbox (i've been playing 40k for about 6 years now, so I have a fairly diverse range of bits) as a basis to convert for a 40k autogun/sniper rifle using green stuff? Also, any tips on how to build a sword from scratch would be appreciated - i don't think my skills are quite up to simply moulding out of pure green stuff, but, once again, are there any suggestions for a basis upon which I might build my sword?

Any help anyone could provide qould be greatly appreciated

Having made a few different guns from bitz - 28mm boltguns and shootas are good starts. Tubing is vital - the cheapest sources are 1) cotton buds/q-tips and 2) lollipops. Epic tank weapons (such as the gunwagon/battlewagon cannons from the Epic Orks) have ideally sized muzzles. Uhmmm... Be creative?

For swords, in MarcoSkoll's collection there is an article entirely on producing swords and the like out of plasticard...

28mm marine swords fit many 54mm models, and as DA says, you could build an autogun using a 28mm bolter or something as a base, then extend it's barrel using tube and add a scope - a boltgun scope or one from a scout sniper would be good. Ork parts also work well at the larger scale, and most other ranges can be used with a little conversion work. Just go through your bits box and I'm sure you'll find some parts.

Thanks very much for the advice, it's just i'm quite nervous not to mess it up.

This is by no means my first conversion (i've been converting 40k and fantasy models for years), but this IS my first ever Inquisitor model, and i'm anxious to make sure I get it right.

Anyway, i'll have the mauser earth model by monday and i have a digital camera, so i'll begin uploading models as I go along, and maybe I can up pictures of my autogun WIP and my sword WIP and get more help from there.

Finally, two more questions;

1) Where can I find the article on building swords? Is it in MarcoSkoll's signiture, and if so, what is it called?

2) Are there any good pictures of autoguns I can use for inspiration. At the moment the one I like most is the autogun being held by the Heretic/Renegade in Imperial Armour 5 - Siege Of Vraks (the renegades and heretics in the gas masks holding autoguns etc.. was sort of the main inspiration for the concept of the model for Zophar).

1) don't worry too much about the gun. If you make a crappy one, put it to one side, build a new one, and use the old one for a mutie or some such.

2) the swords article is called Converting the Masses/convert.pdf.

3) Well, FW shows pics of all their autoguns, but in general, they look like assault rifles, but often blockier...
