Title: Guard Squad
Post by: kierkegaard on May 31, 2010, 07:48:56 PM
I am working on a five man Guard squad at the moment. I have just finished these three (although I forgot to put the scabbard on the Sgt. Black model's back - damnit!)

I still have a Leader model (with Maj Jaxon's head, Kal Jerico's arms, a bolt pistol and chainsword) and another lasgun wielding guardsman to finish.

Anyway, hope you like them.

Sorry about the washed out looking photo - the gun casings and helmet bands are actually green, and the webbing is brown (it all looks pretty grey to me in the photo though.)

I quite like the grey look actually, very urban warfare grim stylee

Nice and simple but very visually pleasing, I'd like to see what you do with the others. Are you planning a heavy weapons guy? No self-respecting kill-team would be complete without a melta gun or grenade launcher for a bit of explosive amusement :P

Very nice!
I really like the models and the painting. I would like to see the Leader soon.  :)

Looking good here.  Guardsmen that look like simple troopers with minimal ostentation, without lack of detail.

Look forward to seeing the last two members.

Thanks guys, I'm glad that you like them.

Rob - no heavy weapons here. They're not meant to be a kill team, they are just a goon squad for use as NPCs (much like Robey's 'Team Six.' (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v77/precinctomega/Inquisitor/teamsix1.png) )

The paint scheme was inspired by (coughstolenfromcough) Dave's Necromundan Guardsman. (http://kaled100.atspace.com/lynch.JPG)

EDIT- in response to Robey - yes, you did. I have now included the link. Thanks for pointing it out.

I put Team Six into the Imperial Guard resources thread, didn't I?

Wow.  I like him, especially the goggles, kinda mean looking.  This guy's clearly the one always on report.  These guys all have just enough individuality, while still forming a squad.

Nice work, just what I think of a goon squad.  lol at how fast these guys will die on the tabletop; at least they will be some good looking corpses. :)

Don't be so sure about that - I've seen squads of Guardsmen using nothing but Lasguns take down everything short of Space Marines...  Of course, this team is gonna break the cycle by having a leader with a Bolt Pistol, so I dunno... :P

OT - I've been meaning to stop by to say how beautiful these guys are for a while.  They're a team I'd be proud to see across the table :)

Even my scribe with a laspistol has been known to gun down multiple foes, and there are five of these  :).

Getting the first shot and a good firing position is a great equaliser - the only problem you have is with power armour, that you really struggle to penetrate at all.

so thats four, plus one for the five man squad......... you know you want ten really including a special and heavy weapon, comms bloke, medic, sniper,  then they need a transport.......  54mm 40k :D

These guys are looking ace! I like the use of heads that rarely get seen much, although now I really want to see a heavy weapons team ;)

Thanks for the complements.

Here is a wip shot of the Sgt. (it's not glued or green stuffed, and the chainsword still needs some work on the handel.)

Face On Shot (http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f330/ratbag23/GuardSquadwip2.jpg)

Does anyone else think that the arms look a bit long?

I decided against using a bolt pistol. I just noticed that the laspistol has a badly bent barrel (I must have done that when I sawed the hand off of the arm.)

Now I really want to build a heavy weapons team! (I might get around to it one of these days...)

Could you take another picture, possibly from a different angle? From this shot it looks like the arms are stiff and unnatural.

Yup I agree, more specifically I think it's the left arm - it needs to either be higher up with the chainsword resting on his shoulder (ubercool if you could pull that off) or lower down with the chainsword pointing at the ground to give the model a bit more flow.

The way you have phrased this ('this shot' not 'these shots') makes it seem as if you have only seen one angle. I included a Face On shot (http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f330/ratbag23/GuardSquadwip2.jpg) (that red text  is a link) in the original post. Does that help, or do you want to see a shot taken from in between the two angles?

Rob - I like your idea of resting the chainsword on the shoulder. Now, how to do that? (lurches off to search through bits box.)

Couldn't you cut his current arm at the elbow, bit of filing, bit of GS, job done! I think it would give him a tonne of character which is sorely missing at the moment.

Sorry to dig this back up, and sorry to have taken so long about getting on with it, but I have some (minimal) progress to report.

In an effort to reposition it, I ruined the Kal Jerico arm in the previous photo.  :(  I also broke the chainsword. >:(

I have resorted to using the bent Kal Jerico arm, and a power maul (which I think looks pretty good.)

Face On (http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f330/ratbag23/WIP/SGTWIP2.jpg)

Any criticism is welcome. Otherwise, i will just go ahead with it as it is. I hope you like it.

I think he looks pretty cool. The shock maul is a nice touch, I can't wait to hear how he got it. And I'm sad to hear about the chainsword, I thought it was really well done, but I'm sure you could do it again for a different model. I can't wait to see him painted.

I rather like the maul, and the pose is definitely better.  Combines to give him a good air of authority.

I much prefer this pose to his previous incarnation, much more natural to me, and shock maul also fits very well indeed.
