Welcome to the first Community Sculpting Challenge! This is a fun contest to see what the collective members of The Conclave can produce :)
With the release of Forgeworlds Kommando Conversion Kit (http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/New_Stuff/ORK-KOMMANDO-CONVERSION-SET.html) and their relative size to Inquisitor Miniatures, we are sculpting our own 54mm Gas Mask Conversion Kit.
What do you have to do? for those who are not members, join up!
Simply sculpt a gas mask or respirator head to fit on any of the existing Inquisitor figures (bonus points if your sculpt fits several!).
Use of pieces from existing models is allowed, but isn't encouraged; after all it's a test to see what you can sculpt!
Post pictures (work-in-progress logs are always welcomed!) in the Painting And Modelling (http://www.the-conclave.co.uk/forum/index.php?board=5.0) forum with an appropriate title and they'll be linked in this post.
email your final image (no bigger than 800x600 please!) to khornes_rage@hotmail.com before the 1st of September.
A poll will go up with all the entries and the community will choose the best one to receive a prize*
A selection of Community Favourites (vetoed by me!) will have the opportunity to send their sculpts to me and i shall look about producing a limited edition Gas Mask Conversion Pack (each of the sculptors will receive a set free)!
So, what're you waiting for? get sculpting!
*this prize is currently an unassembled Sevorina, an OOP Kal Jericho head and a Heresy Bag-Puss. This prize may improve if enough entries are received!

Gav's Original Post:
Quoteso, having a look at the Forgeworld Gas Mask Head thread, i agree that the FW gas masks are nice, but horribly over priced.
Sculpting heads is easily the hardest part of any sculpt. so much so that with talented sculptors such as Kev White and Steve B it's pretty easy to spot their sculpts by identifying the faces!
However, gas masks lack alot of those facial features and to a certain extent, allow variances in normal anatomy ( "It's padded!" )
so, is anyone up for a fun challenge? sculpt a generic Gas Mask Head able to fit on an Inquisitor miniature before 1st of September, either post it in this thread or create one.
we'll have a community-wide poll as to whose is the best and i'll send that person.. erm. A Sevora, a Heresy Bag-puss and a sought-after Kal Jericho head (sorry, my bits box ain't what it used to be!*) not to mention Bragging Rights! ;D
so, is anyone else up for this?
*although, the more entries, the more generous i'm likely to be!
Yeah I'm down for this cause! Any chance that you could send casts of entries back to the entrants? I'd probably make a couple of different ones so I could outfit a few chaps with them...
I'm not a great sculptor, but as you may guess from my choice of primary character model, I absolutely love the aesthetics of gasmasks! I'd be up for this, if only for a laugh!
One question; does it have to be entirely modelling putty or can we incorporate bitz into it, so long as it is mostly sculpted?

well, so long as they have a flat section at the back i should be able to resin-cast 'em... with the sculptors permission i can get a pack of the more castable ones together :)
personally, i'd rather not have bits in there as makes the casting rather questionable.. plus those bits were sculpted by someone else ;)
but this is a fun contest, so by all means include bits; a full sculpt will rank higher ;)
try your local modelling shop; plasticard comes in all shapes and sizes and ball-bearings get pretty small as well :)
Woo will definitely be having a go at this! Mmmmm Kal jericho head...
I love the idea of the casted gasmask packs too; i'd definitely be interested in buying something like that (providing it's at the right price and i actually have money...); that way, even if mine are rubbish, i can get a few together and make some nice Sarthuulian cultists :D
Any particular era you want the respirators designed in? I.e. The different between Steel Legion and Storm Troopers...
well, this is Inquisitor so anything characterful will work :)
just remember some of the minis have arms close to their chests and i can't cast anything too fine (like hoses :-[ )... yet ;D
This sounds like fun to try so you can count me in.
Are you going to start up a thread in modelling that we post the pictures to when were done, or should we just put them on here? Been planning in my head all day...
My first head is very nearly done :D. Just got to wait for this layer to dry so i can add a few more details and then i'll post it!
i'll get something more official sounding written up ;D

i'd recommend starting a thread (with something appropriate in the subject line!); after all, you may (or may not :D ) get useful advice from the rest of the community (what with this being a Fun Project for all :) ); i'm looking forward to trying out new techniques and seeing how others work 8)
what i'll do is pin this and add links to the various threads in the original post if people think that'd be a good idea?
i'll host the final entry pictures and make a poll for final voting; more info to come once i've written the "rules"
What's the policy on using existing parts purely as a framework? That is to say: if none of the original shows through, do we still get docked? I was thinking I'd try using a filed-down version of that useless "Terminator" IG head as a base; I'm a bit balls at keeping things in proportion when working from scratch :P. Any chance of a ruling before I get stuck in?
When's the last entry date?
