Title: WIP Scribe Updated
Post by: kierkegaard on January 23, 2011, 09:42:43 AM
I am working on this at the moment, when my hand lets me.

What do you think? All C&C welcome.

Obviously it is just blue tacked together, and lots of things about it will be corrected (the lean on the base, the fact that the left hand isn't holding the book, etc...)

nice combination of parts! and the pose is very cool! gives him an arrogant aura, which works very well for such a well-educated person.

Woah, that's looking excellent - imaginative and very 40k.

Superb stuff, looks like it's come straight from that excellent artwork of the teeming population on Terra (which for the life of me I can't find anywhere online, but is in the very front of 4th & 5th ed 40K rulebooks).

My one possible suggestion would be to add a rack of two or three books  within arms reach - after all as a scribe every piece of information must have a specific place to be noted down, cross-referenced, annotated, adjusted, collated.....

Looking good.  We don't see enough menial servants of the Imperium and this guy is just oozing character.

Perhaps he needs a servant to help lug around all these books?  A cherbum perhaps or a servitor on tracks serving as a mobile library.

Ha! Beaten me to it (not difficult given my geological modelling pace), and thrashed me hands down on execution! I was thinking about a member for my Dark Mech retinue looking something like this, very nice indeed; consider your idea throughly stolen. Looking forward to seeing this progress.

My thoughts exactly, a database access point doesn't quite have enough GrimDark about it ...

Very "practical" Imperium-ish. Legs are really only in the way for a scribe anyway huh? Most awesome, hope your troubling hand lets you finish it!

I really like this idea, but his anti-gravity platform just isn't big enough.

I also like this idea. Maybe a robed servitor with bionic hands full of books, with books strapped to his body. Perhaps even mechadendrites holding books...

Nice idea.

I'm glad that you like it, but it wasn't my idea. I stole it from the guy who placed second (http://demonwinner.free.fr/germany/2006/golden_demon_winner.php?categorie=5#2nd) (the model on the right of the photo.)

although you can't see him very well in the angle of this photo, there is another child servitor/assisstant holding 2 thick books in a stack in his (bionic, of course,) arms.

There is a much better view of that model in the back of the printed rulebook. I can't believe that I forgot about it!

Consider me inspired. Thanks for reminding me.

There is another floating scribe here:

Ha. I too had forgotten that that's at the back of the rulebook, I just remembered it is a UK GD winner and went hunting on that site for it.

Hey Kierkegaard;

Apologies for resurrecting this thread but I was looking through it because I linked it to show it to another poster.

In the Dark Heresy rulebook there's quite a nice bit of art that might be interesting for you. I thought Heroka's idea of more books was a good one - a scribe can never have enough literature about - but obviously there's not enough room and it's difficult to get things to work out.

In the Dark Heresy book, there is an illustration of an Inquisitor; this is part of it, and I think if you could make it into a miniature, it would look very grimdark:

Another excellent suggestion - this scribe is going to end up with his own retinue if I'm not careful.

I have already started work on a mutant servitor with a tray of books, and I have been kicking around the idea of having a servoskull note taker (as kind of a secretary for him) and now this...

Thanks for the inspiration.

The idea of a mutant servant (not sure about "servitor") as almost a "beast of burden" is a great one. I imagine a library somewhere on an Imperial world with Quasimodo-like muties sweeping and tidying. Really quite evocative already just from the name, which shows you're onto a winner.

Well, I call it a servitor because it is half bionic bits.

What I have so far is Quovandius' torso (with the chains and rings removed,) Gruss' legs (with the hem removed,) the masked mutant head from the booster pack, and a pair of bionic arms built from Sentinel chain weapon attachments and old Space Marine servo arm claws

I'll take a wip shot when I have it fitted together.

Great job as usual, I am too building a scribe but inspired by a different concept sketch. Is going very slowly but I hope to be able to show him soon

Inspired by the artwork that Molotov posted, I have built a book carrying servo skull. What do you think?

Definitely needs more books :) A couple of burnt-out candles would look good as well, the wax dribbling over the ancient tomes...

I Love it, I want one.

I agree that a couple of books more would do the trick but i love it anyway, I will definitely steal the idea for my sage

Needs more cables and stuff, but a great start.

Thanks guys. I'll put another larger book under the stack. I don't really see where I can put any more cables though (you did look at the side shots, right Robey?)

why not add a small censer or tabard hanging below?

Perhaps one going from an eye socket to the skull base? I like the sense of movement with them all streamed back, although that makes me think the servitor must be going at quite a pace, I hope the books are strapped down well!

I think the difference between the image and your model is that you've got the tray balancing on top of the skull, rather than in the image, where the top of the skull has been sliced off. I think they both just give differing looks. Perhaps a third book beneath the metal book might look better?

Heh.  Oops!

Although, I still think that at least one dangling cable from underneath the skull would finish it off a smidgen.

Personally, I think that the cables look spot-on as they are, but a robotic eyepiece or lens somewhere would help to make the front of it look a bit more mechanical, and also give it a way of telling where it's going...
Title: Re: WIP Scribe Updated
Post by: kierkegaard on March 12, 2011, 02:45:02 PM
Sorry to take so long in replying, I haven't been able to get on the site until today.

Thanks for all the suggestions - I like most of them, but I am a bit hampered by the way that the flying base takes up so much of the underside of the skull. I don't really think that any more cables will fit under the skull, and a dangling tabard or other object will ruin the sense of movement implied by the trailing cables.

At the moment I am thinking
a) Another book in the stack
b) A robotic eye/lense looking widget in one of the eye sockets
c) Rebuild the skull/tray interface so that a bit more of the top of the skull is removed and the tray sits lower

Sounds good, man!
Just had another idea.... If you wanted to exaggerate the feeling of motion, you could have some cloth bookmarks hanging/flapping out of the back of the tomes in much the same way as it's cables...

Gentlemen, I give you the finished book skull.

Front (http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f330/ratbag23/BookSkull1.jpg)
Left Side (http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f330/ratbag23/BookSkull2.jpg)
Back (http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f330/ratbag23/BookSkull3.jpg)
Right Side (http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f330/ratbag23/BookSkull4.jpg)

I need to do the base, but otherwise it is complete.

Yorick?

I will probably just grit the base in keeping with the rest of the retinue.

Thanks for the compliments, and thanks to everyone for their suggestions. I wish I had the bookmark idea before I built the books. As it was, I was unable to attach a convincing bookmark  :(
