Title: Tanhauser - and Gue'vasa companion now!!
Post by: Shannow on April 20, 2011, 12:35:34 PM
This is my WIP for my character described here http://www.the-conclave.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=1466.0

Apologies for poor pictures.

Still much to do, especially with broadening the legs, tidying up current work and such etc etc

C&C always welcome!

EDIT: I might add that he is deliberately supposed to be weirdly proportioned, being Void born and then heavily modified during his time hunting in the underhives with steroid, also going for a slightly androgenous-ish look with selection of legs.....

As most of those pictures seem to have been inadvertently titled, I think this gentleman will forever be blighted with the nickname of "Mr Tomato Ketchup".

It looks good so far. My one raised eyebrow is that you seem to be using Milliput Yellow-Grey for detail work, which is a purpose it doesn't excel at. It's great for cheaply bulking out the crude shapes of a model, but I'd use an epoxy based putty for detail work, not a clay based putty.

He looks creepy like someone like him should, the savage look is very nice and fits well with the more high-tech parts.

Excellent stuff! Your modelling skills are really coming on in leaps and bounds. I would echo Marco's comments about your use of putty, definitely get some ProC or GS on there to sharpen up the edges, maybe take a sharp scalpel to some of the areas you've already put down to highlight those edges.

Thanks for comments! I have mainly been using milliputt to bulk up the callidus assassins legs, I bought some Green stuff yesterday to add my detailing so fear not! His strap and face mask etc were just mocked up quick for the photos of me ketchup.....which I have only just realised is there.....

That could be a bit tough. Being clay based, I tend to find Milliput tends to crumble rather than cut.

I only use it for the very bottom layers of bulking up a figure, to try and avoid having to cut it (because I often do amend the early stages with judicious use of a hobby knife) - so I tend to use ProC for more precise bulking, because it can be trimmed more easily than Milliput and is a fair few pennies cheaper than GS.

He looks fantastic, definately an entity you would not want see stalking towards you down a darkened corridor. I suspect that any tears in the rain he gets involved with won't be his own...

High heels... :D

It is very odd, and very cool looking though. I look forward to seeing progress on this.

My inspiration for the heels was actually Barbarella..... I can imagine in the 40k universe sexuality is less well defined, or at least isn't in the world he comes from:p

ATM he's just been touched up with Gs and some little details added, will put up pics tomorrow before sprayed black.

Cheers everyone!

Only a few! Still playing with rest ;) am going to put a group shot up when I'm done fiddling :p this just has callidus legs, eversor arm, covenant backpack and kals sword... You approve?

The leg broadening works really well- not too much it give him tree trunks for thighs, but they work with the torso, something I'm quite surprised by- it's not the most obvious of combinations but it's certainly a cool one!

Is that a knarloc head?  Looking pretty good, got a real predatory look about him.  Is he a xenos or some kind of mutant?  He looks mostly human, but most of the more effective xenos share roughly the same proportions.

Very Blanche-esque.  Where's the torso/head from?

Post by: Shannow on April 23, 2011, 01:59:38 PM
Thanks for the comments guys!

The torso and head are taken from one if rackhams lone star wolfen hero characters, another came in the box, but still fiddling with him!

@Myriad, he's a void born, and I want to work the idea of a familial mutation based around wolfish features into his story.

Hopefully start painting soon, dependent on how swiftly and well my revision goes.

This is the third member of this warband along with tanhauser and his progenii truant (who in middle of being modelled)

This was mostly sculpted, not up to the scratch of all the great 'Clave sculpters (you know who you are!) but I am relatively pleased nonetheless....

Looking good! Your sculpting is really improving. I'm a little confused about his pose though - what is he supposed to be doing? Mid-jump? Crouching? I think he's leaning a little too far back, he looks very unstable, whatever he's doing...
Title: Re: Tanhauser - and Gue'vasa companion now!!
Post by: Shannow on April 24, 2011, 03:46:57 PM
He actually looks like he leans more on the photos... Not sure why.. The pose is a 'about to start sprinting' pose, if you imagine he would pivot on the ball of his right foot and head off that way at a sprint:p possibly a little obscure.

Have changed his back mounted weapon out for much larger one but not sure about it, will post pictures when revision done for the day!

Glad you like overall anyway:)

I think the motion in the posing would make more sense if the cape were to flow a bit more in the same direction as his hair. Nice sculpting though. Nice and clean looking which is appropriate.
Title: Re: Tanhauser - and Gue'vasa companion now!!
Post by: Myriad on April 24, 2011, 05:44:23 PM
He looks more like he's ducking to one side or dropping onto his left knee than about to sprint, but it may be the photos.  A very individual pose either way.  Great sculpting too, your best work I think.  Goes to show that once you start doing your own scultps you keep improving, so it's worth persevering.

Judging by the scale shot, he'd stand a bit taller than the eldar ranger, meaning he cuts a pretty mposing figure, especially in body armour.  Those guns don't seem to be imperial standard.

Post by: Flinty on April 24, 2011, 11:38:00 PM
Well, for someone who claims he can't sculpt, I think there is some very crisp green stuffing going on there. Agree that the pose is a little....different, I think Mr Caine's suggestion about cape-flow might help out a bit.
Title: Re: Tanhauser - and Gue'vasa companion now!!
Post by: Shannow on April 24, 2011, 11:50:04 PM
Thanks for the comments guys! I've reposed him with his right foot on a higher plan so his back is straight, will put pics up tomorrow to see what you think and if still a bit iffy will have a go at peeling and resculpting the cape  as Ada..  er... Hadriel suggests :)

@Flinty - Thanks very much! Just when you put it next to Dave, Robey, Kallidor, Gav.. the list goes on  :P

@Myriad - He did end up taller than I intended as they usually do, but he is on tip toes.. I'd guess 62-63 fully straightened out. The guns are Tau tech (waiting for Marco's rules on them to actually write stats up) as he was in the employ of the Farsight Enclaves broken away from the main Tau empire, as a mercenary but then *insert backstory* ended up with tanhauser as a psyker hunter and odd job merc!

Nice colour scheme.  The pose looks more as if his weight is moving forwards, which is a more dynamic look to the model.

wahoo! He looks brilliant. Forget what I said about the cape, the style of this one fits the character perfectly. Reminds me of Jes Goodwin's initial Tau sketches. A lot more feral brutal looking. Definite plus in my books.

Thanks for the compliments guys :) Full kudos has to go to Robskib though as I painted this guy based entirely off adivce he gave to me on painting at the IGT this year. Cheers dude!!

Struggling to paint Tanhauser (I get lost when there is lots of detail to paint) but will broadly be using the red/black/white/blue scheme with more emphasis on blue I think.

Hopefully have him done and maybe a few more WIPS up before weeks end, but revision turning head to mush so I just sit and stare at my models a fair bit now with the occasion bit of drool leaving me......

Well, your painting definitely excuses any other qualms I had about this model.

Also, the new DE miniatures have made me think that this could be a DE Grotesque that escaped before the hemonculus was finished with him...

Thanks guys, I definitely think its my best painting work so far, though really struggled with it!

@ PO - I've left his origins ambiguous but that sounds a great little idea...

Working on his crew and back story of the ship and such at the moment, so hopefully have a few wip members up and a bit of story. Mainly inspired my Disciples of the Dark Gods and the radicals handbook career paths I have to say.

Cheers again
