Title: New player in Nottingham, got an idea...
Post by: MaxO on October 14, 2011, 03:52:12 PM
Hello there,

My name is Max, and I'm a student based in Nottingham. I've been thinking of getting back into GW, and really wanna get into Inquisitor.

The first thing I was wondering, are there any players in the area? I realise that WHW is fairly near, but was wondering if anyone plays the game regularly in the area?

Secondly, my idea for a character was a Thousand Sons loyalist, who abandoned his legion when they turn/were hugely misunderstood and has roamed the galaxy since, attempting to redeem his legions sins etc etc. However, I've heard that Astartes characters are a bit hated on in Inquisitor, and I wondered whether this would stop me playing the game?

Thanks for the help,

Max

There are a few players in Nottingham (see the location thread (http://www.the-conclave.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=38.0)), but we also hold events at WHW every now and again.

The next is on October 29th actually. As you're only just getting into the game, that's probably too soon for you to come and join, but you are entirely welcome as a spectator - you can come and talk to people about the game, as well as getting to see how it plays.

QuoteHowever, I've heard that Astartes characters are a bit hated on in Inquisitor, and I wondered whether this would stop me playing the game?
Astartes characters are not really the focus of Inquisitor, which focuses on the fight away from the front line - and in Inquisitor Space Marines are veritable killing machines that can completely overwhelm the Inquisitors, Guardsmen and Hive Gangers that the game more normally focuses on.
In short, hypnoindoctrinated psychopaths whose primary problem solving tool is a bolter are not exactly great for the game's roleplay element.

There are ways in which Marines can be reasonable in Inquisitor, but they're fairly hard to roleplay in a way that does justice to them, and are probably better suited for more experienced players.

Also, I will be entirely honest, the idea of a Thousand Sons loyalist sounds like it has real potential to be a Mary Sue - in this case, because he is inexplicably incorruptible. Sort of like in the stories and fanfics where there's for some reason a good vampire who turns against their evil kin.

Tempting as it is to play the one good apple in the bunch (I do it myself), it's easy for it to descend into cliché.

Anyway, moving on, I'd be a little worried about the Marine's age. If he's post-Rubric, he would have no personal will. Pre-Rubric, the current setting would make him ten thousand or so, and Marines don't normally live that long (Dante is said to be pretty old at 1100). Chaos Marines are dependent on the favour of their patrons to have lived as long as they have, and this guy wouldn't appear to have such favour.

It's probably possible to rework the idea to fit better with the canon and avoid some of the more serious clichés, but it might call for him to be a Marine from a Rogue chapter instead of a Thousand Son.

Welcome to the Conclave!

[/Traditional Big Yellow Welcome]

Aside from that, Marco pretty much has it bang on the nose here, apart from one point, which I disagree with...

If anything, I would encourage you to come along to the WHW gathering on the 29th because you've never played before. The gathering is for all players, old and new, to come together to experience a really good day of playing Inquisitor how it was meant to be played; Epic battles between warbands you'd never even conceive of, a massive display of modelling and painting prowess, the chance to mingle and chat with some of the people who keep the hobby alive with their prolific article writing, hobby documenting and loremastering and above all, a chance to play some connected games with a terrifically written overarching story (if anything that Marco has ever written is anything to go by) with a sense of place within your games, leading to an ultimate conclusion.

All of this takes place within the Carthax sector, a sector in space of the Conclave's own devising - it's histories, characters and grand events are all recorded, character interactions logged and relationships (good or bad) forged - all of which is documented on the Carthax Wiki page (http://carthax.wikispaces.com/) which gets added to almost on a daily basis.

Keep an eye on ebay, or if you want the models quickly, hit up the GW website and pick up a couple of models. Slick Devlan, Sergeant Stone, Covenant and the Guardsmen models are all gloriously interchangeable parts-wise, and can be bits-bashed with ease.

You still have plenty of time to come up with great, original characters even from years-old pieces - keep an eye on the Painting and Modelling forum for examples - and the Conclave will help to flesh out your characters on the Rules section. You could have a respectable warband within the week, and you could come down to WHW and experience Inquisitor how it was meant to be played!

[/shameless plug] :)

Well, yes, if he feels he can be ready in time (perhaps by borrowing some characters), he is entirely welcome to attend as a player.

However, if only two weeks lead in time is a bit too daunting for him, he is entirely welcome as a spectator.

Hey!

Thanks for the replies. I will probably come down on the day, but unfortunately I don't think my wallet can afford a full party of 54mm mini's, so I think I'm gonna have to play Inq28. Which is fine, as I might be able to get my friends involved, but it's a shame as the Inq 54mm mini's are superb!

It can be a lot cheaper than some people think. Even if you're buying new, an 3 or 4 man Inquisitor warband is a lot cheaper than a new 40k army - but if you look on Ebay and are prepared to scrub some old paint, then it can be cheaper than even a single Tactical Squad would set you back.

But Inq28 is a perfectly valid way to play the game. People can argue for hours over it, but my basic assertions on the scale issue come down to:
- Inq28 is fine as long as the players:
-- Avoid the temptation to put a full squad of Devastator Marines on the table.
-- Don't just pick Thomas, Richard or Harold out of their Imperial Guard army, and understand that their models should have more character than just being a faceless goon (Convert them! Make them different!)
-- Understand that despite it being really easy to have Space Marines or models wearing power armour and toting boltguns or power swords, that these things are devastatingly powerful in Inquisitor and should be kept to a minimum.

- Inq54 does not have as many downsides as the 28mm crowd may think.
-- 28mm terrain usually works fine for 54mm models. (See #1 (http://buildyourimagination.co.uk/minis/conclavegt09.php?i=DSCI0305.jpg), #2 (http://buildyourimagination.co.uk/minis/conclavegt09.php?i=DSCI0311.jpg), #3 (http://buildyourimagination.co.uk/minis/conclavegt09.php?i=DSCI0314.jpg))
-- There are lots of 54mm manufacturers, so there is a lot more variety than just the GW range.
-- It's easier to think of a 54mm model as a personality than a 28mm model that people are used to shooting by the dozens in 40k.
-- And almost all the Inquisitor events held at Warhammer World are at 54mm, so if people want to join in with those, they'll need 54mm models.

-- 54mm is a great scale to work with and allows you to practise modelling / painting skills

-- It's possible to build a four man 54mm warband for less than £10 - for example this one was converted from cheap Star Wars models bought on eBay, 28mm parts from my bits box and a few easily available 54mm bits.

If you are going Inq28 then take the time to convert.   Don't use anything straight off the shelf as that way you can think of personality for the character rather than just armament.
