Title: The Warband of Inquisitor Hans Grummond
Post by: Hum_Con on April 25, 2012, 10:56:54 PM
I have posted the background and rules for Inquisitor Grummond in the rules section, so I thought I would keep the pictures here.

Grummond is made from a mix of Eisenhorn, Covenant and Preacher Josef parts. I started painting him years ago, but never got around to finishing him. Having finally been inspired to pick up the models I needed for his warband at Salute last weekend, I thought I should finally get on and finish him off and posting the pictures will, hopefully, provide an impetus to do so.

Nice model. What models have you got planned for the rest of his warband?

I've got the models, but I want to post pictures at the same time as I post the rules and background for them.

I like the model, the parts fit together and he has a nice grim look. A menacing fellow, I am however a bit curious to see what else you have.

He looks badass.

Always good to see that combining the original models can produce great looking characters too.

Model Number 2 - Acolyte Cerina Barius

She is essentially the Barbaretta model with her arms heavily repositioned and the hands replaced with ones from the old weapons pack. The barrel is from a set of Tamiya World War 2 accessories, though I still have some work to do on her base. I didn't want to be running, more simply advancing.

I like what you did with her, she looks really different from the usual Barbaretta. Her pose is well done, she looks like she walks carefully while a strong wind blows in her face.

Grummond reminds me of Saussere! That really is a good set of parts

My third model - Lady Marika Emeraldus

Marika is fairly obviously the Lady Gregorian model from Model Display Products http://www.modeldisplayproducts.co.uk/index.php?route=product/product&path=66&product_id=160 (http://www.modeldisplayproducts.co.uk/index.php?route=product/product&path=66&product_id=160). I absolutely love this model. I always intended to include a Rogue Trade but when I saw Lady Gregorian I decided to go with a female one. The only change I made was to add an Autopistol to her hip so she would have a ranged weapon, it isn't very visible in this picture though.

The only drawback of this model is that it is noticeably smaller than other Inquisitor models standing only 50mm tall from feet to eyes. This isn't so much of a problem with Grummond, but she is much smaller and slimmer than Cerina Barius. I am hoping that by sticking the scenic base the model comes with onto the GW round base it will give her a little more height and compensate to some degree.

The rules and background for her are in the rules section.

I do find it odd how a small height difference in a model can be and still have people to worry about it. People do vary in height - a lot of women I meet in real life don't even make it to my shoulder level.
And while I'm not quite that tall, it's not difficult to find two people who are a foot and a half different in height. It's far odder that all the models in the Inquisitor range are almost the same height (although it does have a practical reason in allowing modellers to swap around parts).

Personally, I'd say don't worry about it - just say she's shorter than average and give her slightly less impressive S & T than the others as a result of her smaller stature.
Whether you (or she) make(s) a big deal of her height in the background is up to you though.

To be honest, it's less about height and more about bulk. The Lady Gregorian model is very slim and quite realistically scaled, while the Inquisitor models are quite bulky and, putting them side by side, the scale difference is pretty obvious.

That said, I am not hugely bothered and the model is far too nice not to use.

Some nice models here. I love the Barbaretta conversion and can say from experience, and a chopped up Barbaretta model in my bitsbox, it's not an easy model to convert! My only qualm would be with her hair flowing back as it is. Dolnikan observed it looks as if she's facing a strong wind, and it just seems somewhat at odds with the movement of the rest of the model. Still, it's a small thing, and perhaps a matter of personal taste, but either way, i look forward to seeing her painted!

Maybe the thing to do is add things to her base that are blowing in the same wind as her hair.

All three models are very cool! Time for a group shot soon? Thinking about Kaled's post, tumbleweed, a cape, or grass blowing in the same direction as her hair might help emphasise a wind, or perhaps you could bend her hair down?

Model number four, Cornelius the Jokaero.

The model is Primaeval Designs 28mm scale Sasquatch  (http://achesoncreations.com/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage.tpl&product_id=777&category_id=58&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=1), which I picked up at Salute from Magister Militum.

For the digital weapons I used some spare 40K weapons from my bits box (a heavy flamer, a flamer and a plasma pistol). The backpack is a Space marine backpack with some additions. The shoulder pad is from the old Space Orks boxed set. The goggles and other bits and bobs come from Mantic games plastic Forge Fathers.

That is the best version of a jokaero I have ever seen! Little bit more tech than I would have integrated but still, looks fantastic!

I have to second Shannow, that's a really great Jokaero. A scale shot of it next to one of the other minis would be great but I think I have a sense of the model's size given the SM backpack.

Honestly I think he has just enough bionics on him for my taste. Maybe a Wookie-style belty thing going from the left shoulder down under the right arm would be cool (but possibly excessive).

Anyway, the rest of the models are looking good too. I have a few too many barbaretta's sitting around so I always like to see new ways to position them (as I hate the stock model) so I may be stealing that. I'll echo the positive sentiments on your Inquisitor as well, great use of stock bits.

On Lady Marika's part I do feel your pain. While people are indeed different heights, shapes and sizes when you combine the difference in scale (heroic versus non), frame size and then throw in a few millimeters the difference can be quite jarring. I know others are more or less passionate about this issue and while I don't think it's truly an issue I understand why it's a bit frustrating. Regardless it's a great looking model.

I finished painting Grummond and Barius today, it's only taken the better part of a decade.

The Jakaero is great, it really fits the part. The lady is a nice model as well, and remember, sdifferent sizes make bands look more realistic. There is something on Barius' face, what is it?

She has a bionic right eye and there is also a mark on the right side of her face which, I believe, was just a piece of flash on the model, but I left it because it looks like a scar.

Looking good! If I were you, I'd spend a little more time on the bases though - it's what separates a good paint job from a good model. An extra, lighter, drybrush of something like Bleached Bone or Fortress Grey (is it still called that anymore?) would do well, a sprinkling of static grass and perhaps some streamers or small plumes of smoke made out of tin foil, tomato paste tubes and cotton wool respectively.

Fundamentally, you want the 'plateau' of the base to be a different colour from the rim - it creates the illusion of a model fighting on a battlefield propped up on a display stand, rather than a model standing on a small, lumpy black hill.

Lady Marika is finished.

This is a more flattering image than Grummond and Barius. But I did go back and lighten up their bases a touch and added some green static grass (there was brown on there already, but it isn't very visible in the shot above). When I have them all done I will post a group shot.

I've finished Cornelius now.

I didn't want to paint him bright orange as I thought that look was a bit over the top. I tried easing up from brown to orange, but the end effect is a bit more brown than I intended. I am still pretty happy with the final results.

And here is the promised group shot.

Great looking posse! (and underused term in Inq I think ;))

Have you considered a very light drybrush of orange over cornelius' hair? Just to fleck the very top edges of his hair, much in the way my dark haired beard has ginger flecks in it that only show in certain lights?

Just a thoght, but I think he looks fine as is, could be a different hair strain mutant anyway:)

How about orange stripes across his back? Sort of like an inverse tiger's stripes - you could suggest he is from a planet with vast savannahs. Jokaero must presumably display different traits varying from planet to planet, or even continent to continent?

I was aiming for the look of a real world Orangutan, which are far browner than most people think, but didn't get quite the orange/red look I was expecting. As I said, I'm happy enough with the final look, it's faintly reminicent of Chewbacca,  it just wasn't quite what I was aiming for.

Love Marika and Grummond.  Thanks very much for the warband picture so we can see how everything scales up together.

Cornelius is very cute, I like.

The warband looks good together, they are all very different as befits a warband but somehow they also fit together.
