Title: You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy - underhive WIPs
Post by: seaglen on January 14, 2014, 08:43:00 PM
Well!

I am finally back in the UK and after what seems like years away (judging from my last post here, that doesn´t seem too inaccurate) I am ready to start modeling and building up my Inquisitor warbands!

To start things off and to get me back into the swing of things, I thought I would begin with some mutants, scum and underhive cannon fodder for the tabletop - best not to ruin my main characters whilst I am still regaining my skills!

And so, without further adieu, my first hive scum, goes by the name of Mikael.
He has an inhibiting disease that has atrophied his entire right side, and is pretty much your average thug with gun:

Following the parts, I did a quick mock up:

Filled some gaps with greenstuf:

Started to apply some colour - skin looks pretty yellow at this stage, but will dull it down with highlights and washes.

Following a few washes of grey and black/brown, and bringing the skin up a notch with highlights:

Added some detailing to the metal areas, and began highlighting the weapon and bandages more:

Any thoughts on the colour for his tunic and loincloth?
Comments and feedback more than welcome!

Where is that amazing atrophied arm from?

I would say give the bandages another quick wash, the really filthy look from before was nice.

The arm is from the old chaos henchman conversion pack GW released.

Yes, I am going to dull down the bandages once more I think.
Updates to come soon!

Fantastic! The metal leg splint could use some rust and crust though...

Thanks Dwi,
Rust and crust will be added in the later stages of painting.
Thanks for the advice!

I'll post some more updated pics today hopefully.

Managed to get some more colour on his tunic and work on his skin tone a little:

Also made a bit of progress with his face:

Lookin good. I would try for a white or tan color to his armour. Offset the darker colors and all that.

Looking, very, very nice.  Would never have thought to have a supporting arm for that pistol, which makes sense considering how weedy the left arm is!

Many thanks Dwi, I was initially going to go for a pale colour on the armour but it just looked too clean.

Thanks Van Hesler, any other feedback I would greatly appreciate!

Update: managed to put a few more highlights and added some detail to the face.
I've also attempted a tartan pattern on his patch but thinking about repainting...
Any tips or suggestions for what to do on his patch?

Seeing as I am getting to the final stages of painting the first thug, I decided to build up the next as paint dried...

No name as of yet, but he is a typical scavenger, limping around on a pneumatic peg leg, looking for loot:

Sporting two stolen pistols and using the hammer head from Josef as his leg.
I also made a staff out of quovandius' back banner.
The arms are from the bounty hunter and his head has the beginnings of a bandanna covering his face.

That scavenger looks to me like a scavvy-boss in the making; just needs a few trinkets and minions.  The peg leg is inspired!

I've never seen such a skin tone worked up from yellow to such great effect before.  Did you use watered-down paint for your washes or the new citadel paint range?

Re the patch; how about painting it as a trophy?  Maybe a scrap of fine material or even a bit of tattooed skin flayed from a captive.  Gruesome perhaps but then he is sporting a jawbone on his belt already.  Or go the other way and stick the ][ symbol on it should you want to use Mikael as a radical's henchman.
Title: Re: You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy - underhive WIPs
Post by: seaglen on January 20, 2014, 09:24:58 PM
Thanks krenshar,
Yes the skin took a while to get right but is essentially bronzed flesh washed with flesh wash (I had an old pot) and then drybrushed with a mix of dwarf flesh and bleached bone.

Following that were several watered down washes of brown and grey to dull the tone.
A few thin washes of red on sores and cuts and the deeper areas of the face too.

As for the patch yes I did think fine material would be nicer.

Any preference on the scavenger with or without the back banner?
And if with, what to paint on it???

In that case, I'd keep the patch with a blue base and try a swirling pattern over top using the base colour lightened with elf grey or bleached bone (disclaimer; my paints are old, so there are sure to be others equally suited).  Thorns (like on the biel-tan eldar) could look good, as could trefoils/spirals, circles or part of a fleur-de-lys.

I like the banner on the scavenger but to me, it makes him look more chief-thug than plain thug so you may want to leave it off.  Without it he reminds me strongly of the hunchbacked dreg model from Mordheim's vampires and looks down-trodden.  If you go with the banner, I think it has to be a fragment from some larger tapestry in the same vein as Quovandius' original standard was done by 'eavy metal. Part of a house sigil, imperial guard flag or even a depiction of a primarch or other hero perhaps.  Or if you're feeling very ambitious, a ragged map/star chart that's charred around the edges and found in his scavenging.

Thanks for the suggestions krenshar!

I very much like the idea of a nice bit of cloth- the fleur de lys could be a winner.
Lovely ideas for the banner too!

Light update: applied some more colour to the scavenger:

A few more pictures of the scavenger as he takes shape.
I am thinking of going for a civil worker look for him - bright orange clothes and greys. To hopefully invoke the imagery of a 41st millennium dustbin man...

It´s update time!

after a few days of painting lapse, I managed to pick up a brush again and get some more layers on the scavenger (for now called Samson)

added a few more layers on his skin tone and also his orange and grey overalls:

(http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/547/vavu.jpg) (https://imageshack.com/i/f7vavuj)

following this, I started building up his metallinc areas and his cloth mask on his face:

any thoughts or comments are welcome!!

Quick update on the scavenger.

Firstly, could could someone please confirm my pictures in the previous post were displayed correctly, and that the below are ok as well?
thanks!

Slight increase to detail on the clothes and banner:
(http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/19/qhxi.jpg) (https://imageshack.com/i/0jqhxij)

(http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/42/j3td.jpg) (https://imageshack.com/i/16j3tdj)

I started on the base and elected to keep it pretty uncluttered in the end (he is just to hunched over for a busy base i feel).
Working up to highlights on his face and mask, and also detailing the chains, metalic studs and other bits and bobs:

(http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/34/nlmd.jpg) (https://imageshack.com/i/0ynlmdj)

(http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/850/6c5e.jpg) (https://imageshack.com/i/nm6c5ej)

Any idea for the banner? I have come to a stage on it where i like the effect of the beige colour and shading but am a little worried to detail it! - any suggestions?

Also detailed his legs/feet/peg leg more:
(http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/812/ymxm.jpg) (https://imageshack.com/i/mkymxmj)

More updates to come soon!
C&C always welcome and encouraged!

As of tonight the scavenger is pretty much complete.
I still need to do something with the banner but this can wait.
Any suggestions or pointers for any parts of the models would be appreciated!

I finished off his eyes and face, and cleaned up the last little bits:

(http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/845/64sl.jpg) (https://imageshack.com/i/nh64slj)

(http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/21/vqxg.jpg) (https://imageshack.com/i/0lvqxgj)

(http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/46/d3me.jpg) (https://imageshack.com/i/1ad3mej)

Now he is to a point I am happy with, I can start to introduce to you the third member of the underhive. He will be a sneaky wiry type, a typical stimms runner or sly backstabber...

Update:
A quick mock up to begin with - I want him to be a bit more energetic that the first two hive dwellers, as they are both in very static positions.

(http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/89/uq9g.jpg) (https://imageshack.com/i/2huq9gj)

I then started filling in gaps and getting the arms to line up:
(http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/10/zgyf.jpg) (https://imageshack.com/i/0azgyfj)

(http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/62/plfi.jpg) (https://imageshack.com/i/1qplfij)

After a bit of consideration for what head to go for, I decided that the Chaos henchman one was particularly creepy...
(http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/11/gmf6.jpg) (https://imageshack.com/i/0bgmf6j)
(http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/703/g2vg.jpg) (https://imageshack.com/i/jjg2vgj)

I will need to file it to fit a bit lower on the neck, but you get the general idea of him.
I want him to look a little more slinky than the other two, so the thin head also helps to give him a more lithe appearance.

I then started sculpting the head and neck join in a bit more detail:
(http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/571/4thg.jpg) (https://imageshack.com/i/fv4thgj)
(http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/62/htsg.jpg) (https://imageshack.com/i/1qhtsgj)

Thoughts and comments welcome!

Update time - a bit of colour added to the gang member, now called Postyl.

(http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/34/siyq.jpg) (https://imageshack.com/i/0ysiyqj)

(http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/12/zh67.jpg) (https://imageshack.com/i/0czh67j)

I'll be going for some brown Khaki trousers with a white vest and a deep red hood to give a little pop.

(http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/546/8grv.jpg) (https://imageshack.com/i/f68grvj)

Started again with my signature "yellow base" for the skin - don't worry, it will get shaded, dulled...

Update:
following a little more shading on the skin and ading in some more details to the metallic areas and building up the red on the hood.
(http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/35/homx.JPG) (https://imageshack.com/i/0zhomxJ)

more to follow...

Bit of Thread necromancy!

More work haas gone into Postyl as of late.
The skin has been highlighted and shaded to a much more natural colour, and I have started work on details like his tongue, Badages and goggles.

(http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800x600q90/843/3h29.jpg) (https://imageshack.com/i/nf3h29j)

(http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800x600q90/401/1cg8.jpg) (https://imageshack.com/i/b51cg8j)

I am particularly happy with the join in the head to the body - the necktie on the torso works well as a base to his hood.

After a little more cleaning up on the white vest, and a bit more detailing on the gun and boots/straps:

(http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800x600q90/513/5pno.jpg) (https://imageshack.com/i/e95pnoj)

You're right about the neck tie working well as the base of the hood - it blends really well.

If you master the gemstone technique on the trooper's visor you could put it to work on the goggles of this guy too!

Finally some progress with Postyl.

After debating on his base for a while, I kept it quite simple and picked a few bits of Ork Trukk parts to scatter and cut up on it:

(http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/1024x768q90/833/fucm.jpg) (https://imageshack.com/i/n5fucmj)

(http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/1024x768q90/856/3pgj.jpg) (https://imageshack.com/i/ns3pgjj)

(http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/1024x768q90/27/0iye.jpg) (https://imageshack.com/i/0r0iyej)

As I was doing this, I started to clean up some messier bits of detail, and have a question for the conclave:

What is this meant to be????
(http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/1024x768q90/89/9nwa.jpg) (https://imageshack.com/i/2h9nwaj)
(http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/1024x768q90/833/5wsa.jpg) (https://imageshack.com/i/n55wsaj)

I am referring to the thing dangling from his large ring-piercing on his arm. Is that an ear? carabina clip?  any help would be useful!!

I also begun painting the base and highlighting the ropes and parts of the weapon and face:
(http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/1024x768q90/834/ijpt.jpg) (https://imageshack.com/i/n6ijptj)

(I've also been playing with effects on my iPhone and did this little picture of my first Gang member (now called Jelek):

Postyl is looking great. I really like the bases on your models. Nice detailing.

Yeah I was a bit confused about that part, so I eventually painted it just as a piece of metal hanging there (it seems to fit better than having a human ear dangling about)

Yes I really like basing models, it always gives a sense of progress even once a model is near completion.
It's hard to find a blanace between detail and cluttering the base.
Samson (the scavenger) in this thread has a completely plain base due to him being hunched over.

Now that Postyl is tidied up, I will be starting on another couple of hive gangers and general bad-guys.
I have a few bits of Sergeant stone lying about that I need to convert...

Eventually reinvigorating this thread too...

I am expanding my Underhive characters and mutants/scum/gang members with a new miniature I stumbled across on eBay.

he was under the search term "ogryn" funnily enough, has no manufacturer's mark, and is scaled really well for 54mm gaming!

If anyone can place what/who this model is, that would be great!

He is wearing basic robes, with tubes coming from a back pack, running along his arms, and attached to syringes on his wrists - he looks all scabbed up, and his head is elongated and alien-like.

I'd add some sprockets and wires to that backpack to 40k it a bit more. Mismatched or a single large shoulder pad should help as well.

I've still had no joy placing where this miniature came from, but I've started the painting anyway!

Keeping it quite simple and muted, with a few bits of brightness on the tubes and backpack -

(http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/1024x768q90/911/db7bdB.jpg) (https://imageshack.com/i/pbdb7bdBj)

(http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/1024x768q90/905/CoQYMZ.jpg) (https://imageshack.com/i/p5CoQYMZj)

(http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/1024x768q90/907/Vr26gg.jpg) (https://imageshack.com/i/p7Vr26ggj)

Not really sure what colour to do the tubes in the end - I wanted to make the syringes look like they have a fluid toxin in them - any ideas how to pull that off, with the tubes as well?

(http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/1024x768q90/905/MEnlxU.jpg) (https://imageshack.com/i/p5MEnlxUj)

(http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/1024x768q90/907/Wqp4eJ.jpg) (https://imageshack.com/i/p7Wqp4eJj)

Also - what on earth do I run him as?? - a mutant? - he is clearly alien by the looks of his face, but he could easily pass as an abhuman of sorts.
Id love to create an interesting background for him
- what does he do?
- what are his hand-syringes for?

I was thinking along the lines of a gene-gatherer, or just a generic toxin-wielding underhive dweller?

thanks!

He looks pretty twisted. For some reason he reminds me of Spider man. Squirting Web out of those syringes to capture people for *Insert evil deed here* and so forth. Maybe some sort of crazed medicae who captures people and then experiments on them or something.

I was thinking along the lines of a gene-gatherer, or just a generic toxin-wielding underhive dweller?

thanks!

I think that sounds awesome. The idea of this creature lurking around, capturing people and animals, then rendering them down and finding a way to splice their genes into his to make him stronger is really neat. He could also just be an abhuman/mutant/beastman with crazy injectors (maybe they count as improvised weapons that deliver toxins?).

Either way, it's a neat mini with a great paint job. I had been wondering what the face actually looked like but it'd much clearer with paint on it!

Also, for the gold areas of the backpack, find one or two raised points and put a dash of bright silver on it. Then blend some white into the silver and put a little dot in as a further highlight. It really makes the gold come to life!

Love that model. He's wildly different to anything I've seen before, but works so well for a mad scientist type.

For the syringes - how about this tutorial: http://fantasygames.com.pl/blog/liquid-in-a-glass/

Sounds like a wicked adversary rather than a random mutant!

This fig makes me very jealous - where did you find it?

Hi there all!

well after a while messing about with silicone and resin, I actually picked up a paintbrush last night and began trying to finish off dome more miniatures!

I begun work on more highlights on this guy, and also the first stages on the tubes and syringes.

(http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/1024x768q90/922/m3HJr2.jpg) (https://imageshack.com/i/pmm3HJr2j)

I also started finishing off little bits of his armour and silver highlights:

(http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/1024x768q90/923/cK93aq.jpg) (https://imageshack.com/i/pncK93aqj)

Im not 100% convinced of the colour on the syringe liquid yet, and maybe should match it with the two blue vials on his belt? - thoughts?

I also got round to painting samson's banner at last:

When it comes to syringes that have funny liquids in for harming people (that's what they're for, right?) I prefer neon colours, scorpion green, blazing orange, etc to look lethal.

On the other hand, would that detract from the model?
Otherwise a blue might fit, although I'd suggest ultramarines blue - maybe or maybe not with blue drybrushing if the liquid is supposed to glow?

Matching the blue on the belt would look good. The green is kind of lost within the rest of his colour scheme at the moment. Mcjomar is right on trying to go for something neon - it will really stand out and make his contraptions the primary focus that draws the eye.

Thanks for the feedback - Blue it is. I think it will make the model less busy, and hopefully the white should draw the eye as well.

Another thread from the dead!

Whilst waiting for glue to dry on my inquisitor and imperial characters this afternoon, I bashed this guy together in a quick hour!
Another hive gang member, scavvy or pit fighter type:

He'll have some sculpting work to tidy up the joins and where his prosthetic (made from old bits of sprue and a lasgun!) meets his leg.

That's a good use of parts.
I like how well the gun arms pair with the torso and legs - and that's a nice twist on the old stone legs to boot. Good show!

Thanks ! - just waiting for milliput to arrive now to tidy him up (along with a few others waiting for some sculpting).

And now for some actual villainy to lead the scum - I've put together a particularly terrifying Chaos magos/Cult leader - made from nagas'h legs, Mynarc's upper body and the Eldar's alternative head - this fit so well when i popped them together, I really love his sinister appearance!

Any thoughts on colour palette for him? - I'm thinking he's Chaos Undivided, but want something distictive rather than black/gold only...?

My kneejerk is red/silver but IIRC that's the paintscheme for Mynarc anyway.
I'd also have suggested an off-tan with bronze, but that's a little close to death-guard.

Those Nagash legs are one of my all-time favourite Inquisitor parts and this is a great use of them; same goes for the ranger head.  Another inspired creation.

Personally I like strong colour contrasts on a Chaos Magus, like a venomous animal's markings...  Combinations that scream "I'm so loud and dangerous, even the Inquisition doesn't scare me!"  A more muted/dirty palette is all very well for a minion, but I see a Magus as preaching from a stage and so forth, dressing to impress the rest of the cult and intimidate his enemies.  In that spirit, I could see white, yellow or lime green paired with black or midnight blue working well, although lighter/brighter colours are a bastard to actually paint large areas with from what I remember.  A couple of vague examples of what I'd consider loud/intimidating colour schemes with straying into full Pink Horror territory:

(https://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/3/12/472845_md-Black%20Legion,%20Chaos,%20Chaos%20Dark%20Vengence,%20Chaos%20Hellbrute,%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines.JPG)

I'm also of the opinion that using metallic paints on the Mynarc shoulder pad or sword is usually a wasted opportunity - treating it as matte daemonic flesh rather than metal gives a far wider range of potential effects, and picking out individual eyes on that sword is especially fun.  Some freehand iconography on the robe and/or armour would also be very juicy.

Feel free to ignore me of course, as it has been an embarrassingly long time since I last held a brush!

Yes I definitely like the idea of something that 'screams' Chaos rather than the muted look for him - all great food for thought!

I've also begun the 'reboot' of an old demon host my friend had in his warband - I always liked the original 2001 model he made with 'tentacle arms' and will certainly carry this through - I may not give him bright red skin again however, just red-tinted perhaps?

Original friends' 2001 model:

He had green stuff small horns originally, so I'll pop some slightly larger ones on him to signify the time passing!

He had a wonderfully ghastly demeanor about him before, floating about trailing the long arms, so want to capture this in the reboot. I've so far replaced the torso with Damien's to give him a more foreboding stance:

As for colourscheme, the red and silver is also a nod to the wordbearers, ymmv.

Following a couple of days hiatus (was my partners birthday after all...), I managed to make progress on the demon host!

I'm really happy with the sinister looming and visceral aura he has!
I'll most likely go plaid skin which blends to purple/pink tentacles on his arms/back - although I'd like to try to stay in the red side of things to pay homage to the original, but just feel it could be too cartoonish...?

I also filed away the detail on damiens face plate, giving him a blank, soulless facade:

Another juicy paintjob on the scum; I especially like the scales on his left arm.  This guy is about as "underhive" as it gets without wearing someone/thing else's skin!

The daemonhost is nicely creepy, especially the growths on his back, and I think I prefer his menacing drift forward to the original Cherubael back-arching.  I'm looking forward to Damien's electro-flails painted as fleshy tentacles.

One minor daemonhost niggle - his "loincloth" seems to be at a strange angle to the rest of him.  If it's just parchment then shouldn't it be pressed back against his legs by the direction of his drift?

Many thanks for the feedback guys!

@Mentirus - I see what you mean about the loincloth now, good spot - it’s a little late to alter it though, I’ll just have to accept the fact it’s kind of billowing the wrong way. Empryan winds and all that...

I’ve added some colour to him now, and am liking the palette, but may go back and tidy it up a bit, as he’s rather blotchy. Not sure if this helps give him a mottled look, or just looks roughly painted...?

You could maybe freehand a relatively crisp tattoo or two on some of his exposed skin, to contrast with the unhealthy/mottled tone of the skin itself?  That'd probably make it pretty clear the state of his corrupted flesh is intentional.

Thanks for the advice and encouragement - I've added a bit more detail to the skin, and a few washes.
Still need to add some tattoos.
I've also detailed some of the sculpting/clipper errors with some metallic blue.
It ties in with the inquisitor who owns him (big shiny blue sword).
I almost imagine them to be fragments of the same psychically charged material the sword is made of.

And in true double-back fashion (I am Alpharius), after saying I’d stick with word bearers for my chaos cult leader, I went the other way entirely and chose a different undivided legion as a base.

Having still quite a lot of the old ‘glistening green’ citadel paint left, and some blue glaze, I suddenly realised he’d look perfect as an alpha legion cult operative!!

I’ve always wanted to try the shimmering blue/green, and the alpha legion ties in perfectly with an influential cult uprising - “for the emperor…”
