Title: A Storm of Brushes
Post by: Alyster Wick on March 27, 2015, 06:04:06 PM
It is March of 2015. So begins a battle of wills, a war fought with determination, courage, and copious amounts of paint. Yes, it is the 2015 Storm of Brushes!

As discussed in other threads, those denizens of the conclave ambitious enough to partake will join their crazed brethren in a challenge to clear five models out of their painting queue, all for the glory of the hobby. There is no contest or prizes, only pride in knowing that you individually finished a project.

Rules:

- Pick 5 models that need to be painted (or less, if you don't have 5) and post a picture of them below with as much or as little description as you would like.

- Post updates over the course of the next couple months! We want to see how you're doing.

- Those not taking part in the contest feel free to post your encouragement! We all need a little motivation every now and again.

- Timeline: There is no official date where entry closes. If you want to join May 30 with 5 (or more, or less) unpainted models have at it! The only requirement is that you be done (bases and all) by June 1st.

- SUPER FUN BONUS RULE!!!: For the sake of keeping things interesting, in your first post resolve to try one new painting technique, strategy, etc. It could even be one you've fiddled with before that you want to improve upon (and experienced commenters feel free to add advice).

Now that we got that out of the way, on to the contestants! I will update this part of the thread when a new contestant joins (be patient with me, I've got a lot of work travel coming up so it may take a few days to update).

Contestants:

Alyster Wick, working on freehand tattoos
Cortez,
Radu Lykan
greenstuff_gav
Aurelius, working on a Blanchian style
Lord Borak
Van Hesler

That's it! The more the merrier, and remember to have fun!

Here is a pic of my five models:

(http://i744.photobucket.com/albums/xx83/alysterwick/photo-1_zpssws9esi3.jpg) (http://s744.photobucket.com/user/alysterwick/media/photo-1_zpssws9esi3.jpg.html)

They represent two different warbands. The Ganger and Mutants are nefarious associates of Interrogator Wick. They act as his eyes and ears in the underhive and are his doer of evil deeds that the Inquisition cannot be linked to. These folks will have some interesting tribal tattoos and possibly some freehand on their "retro" clothing (it'll be a tight fit in some places, but I'd like to try!).

The two others are the beginning of my puritanical mechanicus killteam. They investigate rumors of heresy within the ranks of the mechanicus and eradicate the impure with extreme prejudice. Both minis will have geometric markings/tattoos adorning their garb and skin.

If you couldn't tell, my new painting technique is freehand, specifically tattoos/clothing graphics.

Well I've managed to find five models for this challenge.

First up are a couple of models that have been sitting around for years. Hope you don't mind that they've already been started (years ago):

(http://i609.photobucket.com/albums/tt177/steyates/DSC_1069.jpg) (http://s609.photobucket.com/user/steyates/media/DSC_1069.jpg.html)

(http://i609.photobucket.com/albums/tt177/steyates/DSC_1492.jpg) (http://s609.photobucket.com/user/steyates/media/DSC_1492.jpg.html)

The next model is a shapeways print of this sniper that I sculpted for the last Conclave event, but never got around to painting, sorry I've not got a picture of the actual model, yet, but the translucent material shes printed in doesn't photograph well:

(http://i609.photobucket.com/albums/tt177/steyates/Kara_zps9togxg0i.jpg) (http://s609.photobucket.com/user/steyates/media/Kara_zps9togxg0i.jpg.html)

The last two models are going to come out of my bits box, in which I found a complete 'Slick' Devlan and an armless Eisenhorn. There was also a couple of arms from a judge model, so theres some converting a greenstuffing to do. I'll post photos once I've assembled them.

i don't own 5 models, nor have a chance of getting 5 done, so i grabbed 3
(http://buildyourimagination.co.uk/minis/gallery/inq/challenge/challenge01.jpg)
a Water Caste (with crappily sculpted arms as i was missing 'em), a cultist to join my growing NPCs and a Soda Pop Relics model who's almost Inquisitor scale:

I will commit to a minimum of 3 models, here are the models I will be painting - a Daemonhost,  a Xanthine inquisitor, and a beast man.

For my painting goal, I want to try and paint more like John Blanche - so a bit looser, lots of splatters, and cool little details. And maybe a few freehand tatoos as well Alyster
;D

Here they are
(http://i1098.photobucket.com/albums/g362/riverside_adama/Mobile%20Uploads/20150322_163156_1.jpg) (http://s1098.photobucket.com/user/riverside_adama/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20150322_163156_1.jpg.html)

And if I manage to get them done sooner, perhaps a couple of these guys too!

Lots of replies so far! Don't worry if you don't have 5 knocking about, any amount of models is welcome. Let's get the Conclave up and running with some new pieces!

Also, I modified the rules at the top a bit as folks seem pretty happy to join the contest/event with more or less than 5.

Here's some poorly lit, very preliminary work in progress just blocking in some basic colors. As it turns out, he actually has a really detailed mask on his head - didn't notice until now! It looks like a Japanese demon /  Samurai face mask style, so I have gone for a rich red color. This is actually a cool backstorey idea - he wears it as he thinks it hides his own beastly visage.

More to come, need to block on metal, then time for washes,  highlighting and detailing.

(http://i1098.photobucket.com/albums/g362/riverside_adama/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-03-31%2022.24.57.jpg) (http://s1098.photobucket.com/user/riverside_adama/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-03-31%2022.24.57.jpg.html)

And look at an article I found by John Blanche himself - how to paint in his own style. Perfect!

http://kingsminis.blogspot.com.au/2015/01/blanchitsu-pdf.html?m=1

I am also a big fan of Delaney's painting style, great use of washes and tints.

EDIT: bit more work on this done tonight. Bit of wash work on skin, metal added and black wash. Need to ditry the metal next.

these guys are in my shed somewhere, have been for years, if they are not broken then i will try to get them finished by june the 1st
although 2 holidays between now and then might hinder my progress i figure its worth a try,  "For the Emperor!" and all that :)

He looks bad ass Radu! Nice pet he has there too.

I've made a bit more progress. Metal needs to be re highlighted after some extensive weathering, then some highlights on the skin I think.
(http://i1098.photobucket.com/albums/g362/riverside_adama/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-04-02%2023.07.55.jpg) (http://s1098.photobucket.com/user/riverside_adama/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-04-02%2023.07.55.jpg.html)

Shot from the back showing his harpoon gun. Going to add lots of checks and color here as it is a bit dull at the moment. Arm is screaming for a tattoo too.

I have posted this on my own thread, but here is my first finished model!
Ragnar Gorbad, Beastman henchman

(http://i1098.photobucket.com/albums/g362/riverside_adama/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-04-05%2018.39.37.jpg) (http://s1098.photobucket.com/user/riverside_adama/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-04-05%2018.39.37.jpg.html)

I don't think I quite nailed the Blanchian style, but I still had fun. Am looking forward to painting some more!

I'm up for this. No promises on how many I'll get done but it's incentive enough to get a couple of models done anyway. Shame I'm late to the party and going on Holiday for the rest of April next week. Hey-Hum! Nowt like a bit o' speed painting :D

It's taken me a couple of weeks to get 5 models ready for an initial WIP photo, but here we are:

On either flank we have the final two daemonhosts I am making for my "Coterie" thread. The Nurglesque host to the left of the picture is a deceased and rotting body, carried along by the daemon's will alone. The Tzeentchian host on the right of the photo burns with aetheric fire. The original model is an ancient Judge Dredd "Judge Fire" model that I found on eBay. It was very short and slight, so has had a waist and shin extension.

The hulking brute 2nd from the left is an Heir-Killer of the reaver fleets of Captain Hagen Bloodoath. In the middle is an Interrogator from an Ordo Xenos warband that will eventually come to light. The final figure is a Dark Mechanicus magos ally of the reaver fleets.

Still a lot of work to do to these before they are ready for painting, but I am confident I can make the deadline!

You've just reminded me I took the Crimelord body and converted an alien out of it that I never got around to finishing. Must dig that out along with the other members of the Brunel Corporation. (http://www.the-conclave.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=2364.0). I blame planning a wedding and honeymoon for forgetting all about them!

But yes, the Heir-Killer uses the Crimelord's cape on top of Krash Krieger Thrax's body.

Finally managed to get some free time over the last weekend and managed to assemble a new Inquisitor out of an Eisenhorn and some judge parts:

(http://i609.photobucket.com/albums/tt177/steyates/DSC_0551_zpslbnl7ytt.jpg) (http://s609.photobucket.com/user/steyates/media/DSC_0551_zpslbnl7ytt.jpg.html)

(http://i609.photobucket.com/albums/tt177/steyates/DSC_0552_zpshdgxnkqj.jpg) (http://s609.photobucket.com/user/steyates/media/DSC_0552_zpshdgxnkqj.jpg.html)

Not completely happy with the angle of the left arm and I'd have preferred a shooting pose with the right arm (but that would have required a lot more greenstuff skill than I possess), however I think he looks ok. Now to try and find time to get some paint on him and figure out the rest of his team and his background.

Just to show that I am, in fact, making some progress...

(http://i744.photobucket.com/albums/xx83/alysterwick/IMG_1752_zpsj4o5vsmh.jpg) (http://s744.photobucket.com/user/alysterwick/media/IMG_1752_zpsj4o5vsmh.jpg.html)

I'll say that the technique I'm "practicing" on at this point is how to get in painting while having to do massive amounts of travel for work while keeping my marriage in tact. That's a roundabout way of saying I'm not super happy with the paint job necessarily, but it's what I can do with the time I have.

PS glad to see more folks have joined in!

Hi guys, posted this on my own thread, but here is number 2! Think I will be on track to get 3 done by the deadline :)

Great work everyone! I feel like I've been the slacker here (though to be fair there's been a lot of travel in the past month, part of the reason that I set the deadline so far ahead).

Anyway, this isn't the only thing I've done but it's the most interesting:

(http://i744.photobucket.com/albums/xx83/alysterwick/IMG_1795_zpsiu4jfowo.jpg) (http://s744.photobucket.com/user/alysterwick/media/IMG_1795_zpsiu4jfowo.jpg.html)

Pretty happy with the forehead veins. I was going to give him a tattooed on "crown." They'd be glowing tattoos that ward off hacking attempts (sort of cyber-wards, if you will). I still may attempt some of those on his clothing, but his head may get a little cluttered. Maybe I'll just do some glowing green face tats on one of his cheeks? We'll see.

Looking good Radu! I remember seeing those models posted for the first time (had to be a few years ago at this point) and I'm excited to see you finish them at long last! That's what this thread was for :)

Also, I'm a big fan of the bony protrusions/scales on your beast. Great pieces all around!

Here's my first completed offering (hope to finish his companion by tomorrow):

(http://i744.photobucket.com/albums/xx83/alysterwick/IMG_1813_zpswvbqqw4j.jpg) (http://s744.photobucket.com/user/alysterwick/media/IMG_1813_zpswvbqqw4j.jpg.html)

Full shot: http://i744.photobucket.com/albums/xx83/alysterwick/IMG_1810_zpsbonsskse.jpg (http://i744.photobucket.com/albums/xx83/alysterwick/IMG_1810_zpsbonsskse.jpg)
Side 1: http://i744.photobucket.com/albums/xx83/alysterwick/IMG_1811_zpsg0prppnf.jpg (http://i744.photobucket.com/albums/xx83/alysterwick/IMG_1811_zpsg0prppnf.jpg)

I'll say, I definitely hit my groove half way through painting him. For better or worse, the sloppier parts are his robes, which take up a vast majority of the model. When I've cleared my painting queue I may revisit him, but for now I say onward and upward!

Closing in on one week! I know I have a lot of catching up to do, but here's model number 2 completed, Hunter Killer Yang:

(http://i744.photobucket.com/albums/xx83/alysterwick/IMG_1816_zpszz0mnnan.jpg) (http://s744.photobucket.com/user/alysterwick/media/IMG_1816_zpszz0mnnan.jpg.html)

Left: http://i744.photobucket.com/albums/xx83/alysterwick/IMG_1822_zpskvbzlcfm.jpg (http://i744.photobucket.com/albums/xx83/alysterwick/IMG_1822_zpskvbzlcfm.jpg)
Right: http://i744.photobucket.com/albums/xx83/alysterwick/IMG_1823_zpslcxenlua.jpg (http://i744.photobucket.com/albums/xx83/alysterwick/IMG_1823_zpslcxenlua.jpg)

Not super happy with my metals, but I tried some more extreme highlights and was relatively pleased with the results. I've been working on getting stronger whites and am happy with the progress here. Not much freehand to speak of on this model other than "Niki" on Yang's rifle (she named it). There are parts of her I'd like to revisit when I have some more time, but all in all I'm pretty happy. More than anything it's great to have her ready for battle. She quickly became one of my favorite models when, in a show of luck and athleticism, she took a running leap off a platform and jump kicked an NPC in the face, sending him flying across the board and knocking him out cold. It was one of the less probable but most satisfying attacks I'd seen performed, and that action came to define her personality and play style from then on.

Now on to the mutants and hive scum for the closing week!

Nice work there guys. Radu, I really like the colours on the lizard. Some good highlighting there, and probably looks more fitting than a really bright orange all over. Hans looks ready to kick arse. Great menace and strength in that pose.

Alyster, I like the creepy tentacle-mechadendrites that the magos has for a hand. I can imagine the horror of the people he meets and tries to handshake. His rotary cannon really screams "I can handle myself" too. H-K Yang is a really unique build, and i love the bionic head. Reminds of the Geth in Mass Effect, while being very 40k all the same.

I have now finished my fifth model for this contest. An as yet unnamed Ordo Xenos Interrogator.

Bit of a rushed job in the end, but good enough. He will get tinkered with in the future. It was good fun painting some strong primary colours for a change.

My other four models were my latter two daemonhosts, and Dark Mechanicus Magos, and Chaos Reaver Captain. The respective threads for these are here (http://www.the-conclave.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=2525.0) and here (http://www.the-conclave.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=2542.0).

This challenge was a great idea. Who would be up for another one running July and August?

Don't think I'm going to get 5 models done somehow. I've nearly finished 2 of them and undercoated a 3rd :)

Alyster, I like the creepy tentacle-mechadendrites that the magos has for a hand. I can imagine the horror of the people he meets and tries to handshake.

If I ever find a way to get the lighting right, I'll have to repost so you can see the blood effects on the tendrils and syringe. Nothing fancy, just the GW Technical Blood, but it goes on thick and shiny. Definitely gets the job done :)

Absolutely. I may come up short (working hard not to though!) but this definitely pushed me to paint more than I would have otherwise. If you initiate I'll definitely be down to join.

These all look great guys. Love the bright colours Van Helser. Alyster Wick, that magos with the mecha-tentacle fingers has probably starred in many a henti-film.

Ok, well here's the finished team. I don't think I'm going to get 5 done but I'll try and get 4 done. Sadly I have a tournament I'm getting ready for on the 6th of June so I'm juggling painting time.

i only managed two out of the three, but did Convert a Dark Angel (http://www.the-conclave.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=2541.0), a Rogue Trader Crew (http://www.the-conclave.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=2546.msg34241;topicseen#msg34241) and an Astartes Crew (http://www.the-conclave.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=2543)!

i did paint Morrigan *cough* Zineda...

She's a scratch sculpt (http://www.the-conclave.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=2538.msg34123#msg34123).

Awesome work then man that's jaw dropping I love the paint job.  I have a scratch sculpt from gav that's being unveiled on Saturday.  I may steal the idea of the t-shirt doodle  for this new chick.

"Morrigan" is delightful Gav, what's her story? I especially like the bell. Things that don't make sense work really well in 40K and especially well when daemon's are involved. Beyond that I have to wonder where in the world you came up with the concept  ::)

Oh, yes, and I think you get a pass on not completing the paint jobs given your focus on other areas of conversion.

And Borak, you're really forcing people to up their game. I'm in favor of another painting competition because, frankly, I probably have a dozen miniatures that have been languishing for literal years needing nothing more than a paint job to be finished. After that though, a competition involving extreme conversion and sculpting would be great. It'd be especially great to have folks posting the minutia of their WIPs as inspiration/a guide for the rest of us.

Beyond that though, your painting is also pushing the limit. Provided I can hunker down Saturday and Sunday I may try to emulate (as closely as I can) some of your freehand techniques.

Basically, I'm really glad this started and people stuck with it. It's been a long time since I've seen so much activity on the clave and it's definitely pushing me to do more. Yay for motivation!

Two days to go! This guys is probably an hour or so away from being done. I need to rehighlight metals, do the entire backpack, and have plenty odds/ends. Also trying to figure out where/what to freehand. I was trying to get "HATE" on one of his hands, botched it totally and fell back on random tribal but the whole thing looks a bit messy because it's intertwined w/ the bracers on his left forearm. Not sure what to do as I really, really don't want to try matching the skin tons again to cover them up. We'll see...

(http://i744.photobucket.com/albums/xx83/alysterwick/IMG_1864_zps19wqtjt5.jpg) (http://s744.photobucket.com/user/alysterwick/media/IMG_1864_zps19wqtjt5.jpg.html)

The other two probably have two-three hours a piece (charitably, I've covered some of the bigger areas with their base layer of paint, have the metals washed, and have completed a couple minor details). May not make the deadline, but damned if I'm not gonna try.

Ran out of steam, but I do have three fully painted models that I'm pretty happy with and two more that have some paint on them. Overall I'm calling it a success.

Group shot!

The ones that got away...

Here's a few more of Quentin, who I finished up yesterday. He was in prison, thus the barcode shoulder tattoo. His rules also mean that he's never quite sure what kind of grenade he's tossing when he grabs them from his backpack (thus the "FrAg?" note on the grenade, if you can make it out).

And, because it's always good to keep busy, this is what I have staring me in the face once I finish these lads up:

Heh, it's you lot that's making me up my game, especially the conversion side of it! I usually just fry brush and wash stuff. I really need to work on the dark and weird 40k theme though. My models just have the 'Grim-Dark' feeling that the rest of the models in this thread do.

Speaking of that, the mutant dude is pretty cool and the parts work really well together. The Blanchian style I'm a big fan of too but I don't think I could pull it off myself.

I know it's past the deadline, but for the sake of completeness I present Droog and King Gogol! Once I can get some better pictures I'll post them in my ongoing project thread and officially be done with this one. Thanks for participating everyone! And get your final pics in if you haven't already!!!

If you can't see it, Gogol also has a bar code on his left shoulder from his time in prison, where he met Quentin.

(http://i744.photobucket.com/albums/xx83/alysterwick/IMG_1879_zpsssd0vn54.jpg) (http://s744.photobucket.com/user/alysterwick/media/IMG_1879_zpsssd0vn54.jpg.html)

And a better shot of Droog where you can actually see his cloth (matching Quentin's):

(http://i744.photobucket.com/albums/xx83/alysterwick/IMG_1878_zpsc6riunyt.jpg) (http://s744.photobucket.com/user/alysterwick/media/IMG_1878_zpsc6riunyt.jpg.html)

There's a plan to add two more gang members and have the whole group be loosely inspired by the new Mad Max (mostly Mortis Rex, when he's done).

Sorry for the late reply,

Those look great mate. Loving the dirty grimy look. What's going on with Gogols lips though? It looks like he's let his 3 year old apply lip stick for him (maybe he has, I dunno his fluff!)

Moving pics to my 54mm thread: http://www.the-conclave.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=2495.15

The full story will be there but the Gogol clan has some grizzly rituals, including marking themselves with their first kill during a battle. I don't have the best pic, but it's supposed to be a grinning skeleton mouth drawn in blood.
