Title: A question for the casters
Post by: mcjomar on February 22, 2016, 01:20:18 PM
I've done a little digging (sticking "Inquisitor 54mm") into ebay, and found a few interesting things.

The last one isn't strictly Inquisitor, but some of the gubbins included in that lot look curious, including some of the stuff on the left there.

At date of me posting, there's about 164 items if you plug the search criteria in and set it to "worldwide".
Including plenty of fresh in box kits, and a number of really old bits. There's probably more under other search terms that I haven't thought of yet.

I've yet to come up with any new concepts that will push me into hunting down old parts for my own use (although, now that I type this, I do have a thought regarding trying to at least create a 54mm version of my 28mm acolyte with the hammer - not strictly new, but at least it would be something), so I'm left wondering if anyone else could use this stuff (or could afford to, in fairness).

For some of these things, they are still in production:

These cultists are Lord Borak's work (starting from here (http://www.the-conclave.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=2538.msg34806#msg34806) in his thread).

And this "Sister of Battle" is from Molniya Miniatures (http://www.molniyafigs.com/khans.html).

Thanks for the heads up.
The weapons that the "sister of battle" has available do look like they could be handy for conversions.
Maybe guard, or mercenaries.

I assume its borak selling his casts... i did have some arse here reselling my casts for ten times what they paid ne!

The crime lord is in my to get list :(

Yikes -- I'd hate for that to happen.

I'm always curious about some casts though - especially if someone were to start 3d printing weapons and bits at this scale.
Not sure what I'd make use of yet - most of my existing character concepts are already built and need either a little more tweaking, or just need painting and a character sheet.
Maybe I'll come up with something in future, but I think I should finish what's in front of me before I start down any new paths.
(I'm currently trying to clear my desk of robotech miniatures so I have space to use to paint my other stuff on).

Okay, I don't know how many of these need to be grabbed for whoever is doing the casting around here.
But by the Emperor, someone HAS to get that last one, because if you don't I will!
(Yes I know I already own one, but if this stuff is going to be recast, someone around here has to do it).

Well I tend to keep a pretty up to date eye on Ebay, and always try to find some bargains...

Im currently bidding on the two hive Gangers - Also actually being sold by another Conclave member ;)

As I am getting into the art of casting, anything I win, I'd be happy to try to make molds for...

The everssor assasin is a model you rareley see nowadays, as is Tesla...

on that note, I have Tesla's head I would be happy to cast up.

I'd love to get my hands on a Damien Bloodhound head if anyone knows of a spare..

Post by: mcjomar on February 26, 2016, 03:27:50 PM
Ahh, fair enough.
I've got no idea who half the 'clave members are on ebay.
I've pressed the nuke button on Kal though - so I'll update when it arrives, and either learn to cast myself, or get someone else to do it so that I can send parts to whoever via the ASR.

i want hte crime lord!
of course, having funds to afford or an ebay account however...
Title: Re: A question for the casters
Post by: mcjomar on February 26, 2016, 07:16:09 PM
Well the trick is to wait till the last few hours and then drop a good bid on it.
And ebay accounts are easy - it helps if you have paypal setup.
Title: Re: A question for the casters
Post by: Lord Borak on February 26, 2016, 11:50:07 PM
I'm going to try and win the crime Lord, providing he doesn't get too pricey. A part of me does wonder who on here I'm bidding against.

Gav, If you want I can bid for you and you can pay me as per usual if we win.

It won't be me unless someone needs a hand around here.
At least we know Kal is safe (whoever ends up casting him, I'm going to want a bunch of sword and laspistol parts from his kit!)
Title: Re: A question for the casters
Post by: Lord Borak on February 27, 2016, 10:43:54 AM
I have the complete kit for Kal (well, minus one holster) and I am planning to cast him up at some point. I'll give you a bell when I'm done with the mould.

I was watching the crime lord, going to bid on him. If anyone wants a version of him, can do a few copies in the grey resin for Conclave members

Example resin for client

Lol sure thing Gav. Going to go through a few figures gradually as i wanted to run a =][= campaign later in the year and offer players some free minis to convert into their warband to start off with (else nobody is going to join it if they have to spend £150 on out of production rare minis at the start xD)

Was going to do resin as its easier to convert, but can sort some metals if there is interest.

Haha  Borak :-* I was expecting to pay more for him :P

Missing:
Jenna
Thorian
Scarn
Gruss
Callidus
Vindicare
Fabian
Bloodhound
Kal Jericho
Bountyhunter
Toothpick Murke
Tau
Krashrak
Citizens
And a lot of conversion packs. Do have the magus pack ... minis one head though :D

I've got Kal and the Thorian both NIB.

My other Kal is in use, and my Jena is the same.

I've found a calidus here:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/262314864703?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

I could make use of the ponytail for a 54mm version of my 28mm character which uses the Bertha Bestraufrung mini from mordheim as a base.

a greman Gruss NIB got snapped up recently - I needed one myself.
Kashrak is out there, linked earlier in thread.
Ditto fabian and the bloodhound.

Can't speak for the rest.

not that it's been mentioned, but ive nearly completed a mold of the Valhallan legs, so we have those now too! :)

also in the process are the fabian arms/head, and one of the mutant upgrade heads (the one with the bionic eye and leather skullcap), and one of the imperial workers heads too...

Beat you to it on the Valhallan set ;) I have also done a set of Talon, Murke, Jaxon, Black and the Guard upgrade set.

I'd love a set of the Mutant bits when you're done though :D

It is possible I could be convinced to finish and cast up my reproductions of some of the unreleased parts (I've got partially complete versions of some of the Lasgun pack and the "Bloody Paulus" conversion set for Sgt Stone), although I'd need to think about it.

(I don't normally cast up any model I'm using as my own player characters, as I prefer my characters to be unique).

I'm going to first appeal to your sense of community (our small group must band together to preserve what we can of the Inquisitor range) and follow that up by shamelessly begging that you get those cast up.

Quote'd love a set of the Mutant bits when you're done though :D

- I think I have one of the heads (bionic eye) as the other two are already on models
- I have the rifle arms set and plasma gun - mutated arm
- I have the tentacle arm
- I have the skinny grenade arm (the pistol arm is on a model too)

Quoteand the "Bloody Paulus" conversion set
- Marco was this ever released?? I have been after the head from that for literally decades!

Here's a list of other bits I have of note:
* Jenna Orchriel
* Daemon Huntress
* Thorian Inquisitor (sans head...)
* Magus Mynarc body and arms
* Tezla's head
* Callidus assassin head
* Simeon 38x arms
* Fabian
* Bounty hunter (sans pistol arm)
* Jan Van Yastobaal arms
* Legs/body/arms and one head from Kal
* Head from imperial worker set (the one normally attached to the torso)
* all the servo skulls
* the thermal lance, bolter/melta combi, meltagun, and multi melta (sans tripod) from the melta weapons set

plus a few odds and ends from vaious booster packs and other more common models.

on a side note, does anyone have the malicant conversion set? the one with two pistols and a different head: http://www.collecting-citadel-miniatures.com/wiki/index.php/File:Unreleased_-_Inquisitor_54mm_Malicant_Conversion.jpg

No - what I have is a sculpted copy based on the pictures that exist of Paulus (who's one of the better documented unreleased models). It's obviously not going to be perfectly identical, but meh. Close enough.

I could also consider looking at cloning the Malicant conversion pack, but at present I don't have a Malicant to use as a frame.

Just saw there is a copy of the chaos magos (Mynarc???) on ebay at the moment for sale from the US.

Can't afford to get it at the moment but if someone else here is interested in getting it to cast...

Also does anyone have the vindicare yet/at all.  I am thinking of getting a model for each of the assassins (then playing the execution force game at inquisitor scale, possibly with inquisitor rules...).

Firing up some moulds here today :)

So it's better to try and sculpt your own?

E: the parts list.
Dorian's lasgun and arms.
Barbarettas shotgun
Possibly stone's legs.
IG torso maybe.
Head could go judge helmet to start.
Rest is gubbins and greenstuff.

Might need to go 3rd party for the torso really. ditto the head.
Callidus legs could work, but you'd have to kitbash the boots.

http://www.historexagents.com/shop/hxproductdetail.php?ProductCode=PC04
There's an easy torso - a little GS to make it look less like skin and more like a sneaksuit.

http://www.pegasomodels.com/productdetails_en.asp?id=180
With a bit of work, this guys legs could work.
http://www.pegasomodels.com/productdetails_en.asp?id=824
Or this guy.

http://www.historexagents.com/shop/hxproductdetail.php?ProductCode=SGF75
Reasonable base model.

completely irrelevent but this guy looks like a good Rogue Trader.
http://www.historexagents.com/shop/hxproductdetail.php?ProductCode=SGF116

http://www.historexagents.com/shop/hxproductdetail.php?ProductCode=SGS17
a little more relevant

Either way, it'll still need a good bit of GS.
Title: Re: A question for the casters

i'd start with the Eversor; all the assassin temples had similar bodysuits, just different details!
Title: Re: A question for the casters
Post by: mcjomar on March 19, 2016, 06:18:57 PM
The eversor has all those plates, and is about as rare these days.
Also has a lot more of an armoured look than the vindicare would.
The Vindicare is more sneaking suit/synth skin look.
Better played out by sculpts of sam fisher, or ninjas.

http://www.historexagents.com/shop/hxproductdetail.php?ProductCode=S5F2

Couple more suggestions for body bases.
I'd be tempted to suggest spiderman with reposing and GS work.

So I've started casting more and (after a trial period) was thinking of springing for a larger quantity of latex (I'm using Smooth-On's ReoFlex 30 and got amazing results, http://www.smooth-on.com/Urethane-Rubber-an/c6_1117_1143/index.html?catdepth=1).

That said, in order to upgrade to a full gallon order it's going to be pretty pricey at around $105 (73 pounds). Half my thinking with casting was that I'd be saving some money, and this is a pretty high price point. I suppose you could argue that $105 of latex will let me cast potentially thousands of dollars of miniatures, but still.

Anyway, does that price some about right to others who have been doing their own casting? Or are there cheaper, quality alternatives? At this point I'm almost inclined to say that test out other products is potentially going to be just as costly (if it turns out poorly) than biting the bullet and getting stuff I know works well.

That's a urethane rubber, which usually i have found people cast plaster or concrete with those rubbers. You may want to look at the usual RTV silicone.

Overview of Urethane rubber: (http://paleo.cc/casting/material.htm)
QuoteUrethane and Polysulfide Rubber
Urethane rubber compounds are commonly used to make both flexible molds (for casting gypsum, concrete, and low temperature metals), as well as making flexible casts from gypsum or silicone molds. Urethane rubber compounds are usually provided in two-part systems (a base and a catalyst). Most do not release from substrates as readily as silicone or latex, and are not as chemical or heat resistant, and the fumes are toxic (use only outdoors or with very good ventilation). However, urethane rubber molds tend to be more hardy than latex molds, and somewhat less expensive than silicone molds. A common application of urethane molds is for cement statuary. Polysulfide rubber is somewhat more complicated to use (requiring a base and two catalysts), smells like rotten eggs, and tends to loose its shape over time. Polysulfide rubber molds should always be stored in a mother mold, and with not contact between the mold surface and other objects. Other than being somewhat less expensive than silicone and urethane rubber, polysulfide rubber compounds have little to recommend them.

Reoflex20 Safety  ( http://www.smooth-on.com/index/view_tb.php?products_id=0089 )
Quote
The Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for this or any Smooth-On product should be read prior to use and is available upon request from Smooth- On. All Smooth-On products are safe to use if directions are read and followed carefully.
Be careful.
Part A is a TDI prepolymer. Vapors, which can be significant if material is heated or sprayed, cause lung damage and sensitization. Use only with adequate ventilation. Contact with skin and eyes may cause severe irritation. Flush eyes with water for 15 minutes and seek immediate medical attention. Remove from skin with waterless hand cleaner followed by soap and water Prepolymers contain trace amounts of TDI which, if ingested, must be considered a potential carcinogen. Refer to MSDS .

Part B is irritating to the eyes and skin. If contaminated, flush eyes with water for 15 minutes and seek immediate medical attention. Remove from skin with soap and water. When mixing with Part A follow precautions for handling isocyanates.

Id recommend Mold Max 14 NV

It's designed to be used without spending on expensive vacuum equipment. It's cheaper in this case. And it's better for your health!!! :)

First thanks for your helpful explanations. Second, I've been doing all of this in the garage (with the big door open about two feet away, so basically outside) with a gas mask that has an organic filter system (I think that's what it's referred too) so hopefully the precautions help! If not, I'm making my neighbors all think I'm pulling some poorly conceived Breaking Bad stunt for no reason!

There is a picture of me somewhere from Halloween a couple years back where I shaved my head/beard into a full Heisenburg and made blue rock candy for a party. I made a passable Walter White! My wife wouldn't let me pass the candy out to kids in small baggies though. In retrospect it was probably the right decision (considering we had just moved into the neighborhood).

Okay, so, who's bidding on those Imperial Citizens? (I think they're both dockworkers, or a dockworker and a welder?).

Yeah, but it's the first time I've seen them come up for sale on ebay.
You grabbing those citizens then?
Or is someone else going to do that - they run out of time tonight, just after midnight, maybe around 1am.

Someone has put a massive dollar bid on these.
It's just gone up to over $70 each not counting postage. Holy crow.

E: I really hope that either we're winning it, or that we're not. Winning because need for parts. Not winning because the cost is extortionate.

E2: that's kind of depressing. I hope at least it's a recaster, because if it's a collector like with the las weapons I am going to be supremely hacked off.

Charax made him pay through the nose for those lasweapons!

Post by: Lord Borak on May 06, 2016, 10:47:15 PM
Whilst I could get them I am loathe to spend so much (bare in mind customs charges on top) on models that I don't actually like. I am getting one of those Fire Warriors though. They're cool.

EDIT:
Gav, cool post count!! someone had the Lasweapons pack?
Title: Re: A question for the casters
Post by: mcjomar on May 07, 2016, 12:17:53 AM
Yeah I read back/up on that event. Some guy in france found and acquired the las weapons resin pack on ebay - no idea how it got there. It was sold in multiple parts, and Charax (and one or two others) pushed the price up as high as possible, as the guy was just going to stick them in a cabinet as collectors items rather than having them recast or at least using them on minis.
I'm half tempted to do the same here, but the fact it got pushed to $71 already is nasty as it is, I don't want to risk picking these up at much over that price.

Thanks Mcjomar - that Inquisitor Scarn did not show up in my standing Ebay search. I've just bought Scarn from him, but not for the full price he was asking (for some reason I already had his hand in a batch of oddments from Ebay a while ago - so he is complete now).
I can make him available to this group to cast from. I am after a cast of a Valhallan head if anyone can help (I've got the Valhallan legs).

Oh, I have these to add to my list.

Chaos Magus
Quovandius

Eldar ranger (minus arms & Bare head)
Daemonhuntress
Tau Fire Warrior

i saw that buried in this thread was a response from Marcoskull, who may possibly be persuaded to cast up reproductions of some of the unreleased parts (partially complete versions of some of the Lasgun pack and the "Bloody Paulus" conversion set for Sgt Stone).

In an attempt at persuasion, if this was to happen, i'd be happy to loan out for casting some equally rare parts i recently acquired.

I've got the legs of the rat-catcher
http://www.collecting-citadel-miniatures.com/wiki/index.php/File:Limited_Release_-_Inquisitor_54mm_Imperial_Citizens.jpg

and very rare, the legs of this unreleased fig

those unreleased legs are gorgeous, if you do get them casted I would love a set. theres so much of these models I never even SAW let alone had a chance to buy, I procrastinated coz... I assumed they'd always be available and was so ill when they did the final sell of I couldn't get an order in.

Has anyone got a built and painted Scarn picture anywhere?

The Vindicare was notoriously bad for miscasts in the first place, which is part of why it became OOP quite fast. It's not impossible it might actually be the real thing.

Yea i heard that too, but it was for the gun miscasting IIRC. Any decent metal caster should be able to cast without that kind of pockmarking. I doubt that would have made quality control onto sale. But i guess as you say, not impossible :P

oops!
Only one person is bidding on it (you, right?) so as long as it's claimed, I don't think anyone else will go for it.

Nah, not me.  :) To be honest...... I have four more Marines in my Bitz box so I REALLY don't need another one.  ::)

Well after I finish the ultramarines combat squad, I'd have an Imperial Fist and Crimson Fist to build. Not sure what chapters to do after that.

I have the mould for the Marine Helmet currently sitting on my Table :) You're welcome to one or two (or more) of them. I have to cast a coupe up for someone anyway.

Quite a bit of silicone there  :o

Just curious, so at this point has about everything released been recast by someone yet?   I ask because I've quite a few original figures that I would be willing to lend out to be cast up if needed and there is one figure I don't have I should like to at least get a recast of.

I've made a fair few moulds of the originals but no where near all of them. I have the whole range except for one of the Dock workers.

Thantos is the man to speak to regarding casts though. He's the professional after all.

Well, the citizen with the polearm looking thing is the only figure  I don't have that I know of.  With the exception of the unreleased items that is.  Thanks for the info.

A somewhat more literal interpretation of my thread title, is there any chance any of our casters might be able to either A: get hold of or B: recast a backpack or two for me for sisters of battle at 28mm? I can't find any spare backpacks on ebay (and GW has long since stopped selling bits packs :-\), and I have a sister with a flamer in desperate need of a backpack.
So it's either a recast, or I'll have to do some annoying fiddly work in an attempted conversion, using the lower half of a space marine backpack as the core, while trying to figure out how to do that upper bit properly without all the space marine bulk.
Cheers.

Massively old thread, but have been thinking of dabbling with silicone/resin once more and making some molds and casts of rarer parts/models.

I'll be making some two-part box molds of pieces from various kits that are either rarer or too valuable to use the original, and that would have useful conversion potential, such as a varied selection of rarer legs/arms/heads etc.

@MarcoSkoll - I'm wondering, looking back through this thread - are you in possession of the 'bloody Paulus' conversion kit for sgt. stone? That head and arms have been on my wish list for years.

Any suggestions from the group as to what I should aim to make molds of, and who'd be interested in what...?

I would love a valhallan ice warrior set, or the genestealer hybrid sets. Oh and obviously any unreleased bits

i'll always put my hand up for more genestealer cultist bits too (both the genestealer hybrid heads and the arms). You can never have too many cultists! (Lord Borak had casted them a few years back and may have some pointers?)

And i thought sister repentia's bolter arms always looked pretty cool.

I think more of the different types of chainswords would also be good (the giant one and the two longer chainswords).

Valhallan legs! :P

Chain weapon pack, Force weapon pack, probably any other weapon packs would be nice.  I think I had the melta one somewhere but that's about it, and those have limited uses really, what with the IC rarity factor and being a bit overpowered for the average game...  Las-weapons pack would obviously be the holy grail, but no one has those so far as I know (I think there's a thread somewhere on how that tragedy occurred).  Bloody Paulus is a nice thought; I don't think I've ever seen a painted Paulus in the flesh.  Moulds of all the servo-skull variants would probably come in handy too.

Re: full models as opposed to conversion packs, in an ideal world I'd vote for Scarn and Sabellus/Crime Boss if you have either, followed by any/all Imperial civilians you can get your hands on, and maybe also the Sister Repentia.  Unbound Daemonhost and Callidus Assassin are probably equally rare, but I doubt there's quite as much demand for them.

By way of a wild card, if you have the Artel W Witch Hunter that'd be an amazing non-GW choice.

In theory I'd buy recasts of any of this stuff, just to have it "in the bank" for when I get around to modelling again.

A half complete attempt to remake it, no more.

QuoteLas-weapons pack would obviously be the holy grail, but no one has those so far as I know
As far as weapons, I definitely have not been ripping the weapon meshes from the Necromunda video game, and it's not even like I have a 3D printer anyway.

I can certainly put together molds for:
Valhallan legs
Melta weapon pack
Genestealer cultist heads
Some of the other rarer weapons

I was also thinking of tidying to put together a hive ganger pack, with useful bits in.
Resin and silicone should arrive by Sunday so I'll keep you posted on the progress.

I'm also thinking about creating some original sculpts of a genestealer cultist torso based off of the recent GW faction release too.

As for 3D printing, MarcoSkoll, what would be your take on trying to make a set of arms for brother Artemis enabling him to wield his bolt gun in two hands.
I recall Lord Borak did a stunning conversion showcasing the pose I'm after, but my sculpting skills may be lacking to recreate this.
Do you think the upscaled 28mm arms would just work, or would the proportions be all out?

Well, it's theoretically possible, although that's actually one of the easier conversions for Artemis. Cutting along the bottom of the right shoulder pad means the right arm can be rotated around quite well, and packing out the right shoulder with GS can point it in the right direction. The biggest challenge is sculpting a left hand to support the bolter.

Pulling out a rather old photo of my own (he's since been disassembled, mostly because I was planning to repaint him as a somewhat less garish chapter):

Well, if there's STLs already out there, it might be possible to adapt them, but otherwise 28mm isn't a good source - actually trying to photoscan it would be more hassle than doing it from scratch or (possibly) modifying a mesh ripped from a game.

3D printers are amazing!  I didn't even know there was a Necromunda video game but after a quick image search, I do like the aesthetic.

Re: making moulds, I remain excited by the prospect of reproducable Valhallan legs and rare 54mm weapons, and will be watching with interest.  Good luck!

Ah ok, thanks for the advise MarcoSkoll. I may cast up a pair of Artemis arms in resin too, to make the cutting etc easier to work with, and give the conversion a go.

Yeah I'll happily have a go at a genestealer cultist torso and legs perhaps - then there'd be a full model at least.
