Title: A Twist on the Standard Ganger Squad
Post by: Alyster Wick on April 29, 2010, 03:10:09 PM
Been wanting some throw-away gangers for my games but didn't want to sacrifice character.  This idea just struck me before work (posted in kind of a rush so it's due for some editing).  I have the bits for at least one of them and will put the rules up later (after I finish what I'm working on for you Kaled, I swear it'll be in your inbox by tomorrow night  :)).  Anyway, it should also be clear what reading I'm doing, without further chatter I give you Alexander and his droogs:

We's is kings of the underhive my brothers, me and my boys.  Yes, right lil Emperors of our own.  Neither batty nor red lay pox upon us for we do as we please and please as we do.
Sykes is a odd one, being a man of my caliber and taste in the nines with a humor to match a charbeast.  It so happened on a occasion that I thought a smile may have lay its sweet touch on his guliver, but it turned out to be a grimace due to the residuals from the ol' in-out he laid on a pair of rotten leggies.  Never once have I seen him laugh if he ain't doin' a bit of horrorshow on a mute or red or some other such unfortunate citizen of these here underpassages.  Then the hits keep coming.  I'll have to confide that his Emperor's day nines look a might be better smeared with the old chrome paste, matches the scar on his guliver better.
Droog's, well, he's a droog, a right ugly half-mensch of a mute.  Generally Sykes and me we don't let him walk around with us directly depending on the company, we two being refined gentlemen of the underhive and all.  But we do lets him be part of the gang despite his obvious handicap.  I've seen him rooker the guliver off a staver rat at a quarter killy with his blastick.  And all this with his soddy peeper.  Poor ol' Droog can never afford a right one but he keeps that silly piece of red crystal hopped up in his socket like it could tell a olyphnat for a batty tanker.
Hard to imagine but I'd say he hates mutes worse than we do and I seen him lay a right stomping on the old chrome of a couple young 'uns come up to my knee.  Even some things is in bad taste but that's old Droog for you, not a lick of refinement (as befits a half-mensch of his stature).
Then there's me, ol' Alexander. The boys sometimes take a little offense at my looks, given I come into a fair trick o' luck and some real fine juvie treatment (my looks being but half my age), but I takes the license to lead as is rightfully my place.  You may say, "why a gang o' three, thas barely a gang at all," but it yee said that I'd have ya down on the plas with a guliver full o' my best stompin' nines brother.  You see in these days it's only a gentlemen wants some pox brought down that's about town in larger numbers.
Gotta keep the sprees on the skinny to keep the battys off you.
Reds'll do ya anyhow but that's aside the point.  If they didn't have more reason than my ol' peeper ink then my sprees woulda earned me a place on their stompin' list.  Some say it looks a wee too close to a eight point shinny, but they's wrong! Alexander don't own no fealty to any mensch or beastie.
Anywhich, story starts out such as this: me and Sykes is out in the Emperor's nines one steamy underhive cycle whens we see a cluster o' battys on troll (course Droog is in the shadows, but not a sight).  But ain't no ordinary troll, see? They's got McMehan leading them with a soddy paste of a droog what's nined up better'en us.  If his empy rags ain't give it away you know that McMehan never leaps his perch unless it's important, and we could hear his "sirs" and "pleases" all in a row.
Well we peepered them spread a spell as it seems they found something might be of interest. McMehan went one way when this niney ol' droog takes two in the oppy.  Well I tell you my brothers we went down that back real easy-like and Droog didn't pop but I tossed two pointers in the air and he spied my intent.  We's normally don't stomp batty's, but this occasion being special (on account of the annivesry of my juving and the nines that empy sort was stretching) we made an exception.
It happened real quick like, Droog snapped one batty in his cappers and Sykes's pop shooties got the other in his ol' chrome cord.  From the other direction I was upon the empy droog with the full might of me fury.  Oh brothers it was a spot of a good stompin' we laid on them boys.  We'll normally stop short of the ol' burning sleep but something what powerful came over me.  When the empy droog started spouting his curses (along with his paste) like there's some hidden I ain't on to, well, I just sided to have my way.  All in all it was a horrorshow spot of the ol' UV, but there's one thing still nickering me.  Some talk o' his "master."  Either way, I quite fancied the bit of sparkle he had.  A nice piece of labor, a "I" with a skinless chrome slapped in the middle.
Didn't nicker at the time, but the other cycle I peepered of McMehan.  He was high up all right, though this time he was spending off his own gallows.  There been others comin' round too, meaner lookin' than battys.  Some of 'em spotting a symbol what's the same as the piece I nickered off the empy droog...

A flip horrorshow idea, my droog....

Seriously though, it's great - i've seen the film and read the book so many times and it never occurred to me to bring it into this sort of thing. I'd love to see the models for them if you make some. Will you be going for how the droogs look in the film? I love the whole aristopunk look (and, funnily enough, once dressed as Alex for hallowe'en - but that's neither here nor there).

Good idea, great potential; look forward to seeing it progress.

I feel he lives up to his name...

Obviously not with Droog.  Though I have faces in mind of Malcolm (renamed from Alexander) and Sykes I'm still wrestling with what 40K arostopunk looks like.  To answer your question though, I'm definitely planning on giving them similar taste, just highly 40Kified (Droogs color scheme will match Malcolm and Sykes so he appears to be trying to emulate the others).

Quick opinion question with Droog.  I'm planning on converting the gun holsters on Devlan's legs into regular pockets.  Coupled with the other random pockets he has I was going to give Droog infinite ammo for his blastick, but with a special rule where he'd have to pass a SG test to find ammo as he searched through his pockets.  His low SG combined with the lengthy reload time of a three chambered revolver-rifle should mean he'll never be popping off too many shots, but I don't know if unlimited ammo seemed against the spirit of the rules.

I guess I could always say that if he rolls in the 90's on his SG test that means he forgot to bring ammo/ran out?

I really like that idea. It puts me in mind of an old DnD feat/character flaw wherein whenever you took something out of a pocket there was a 50% chance it would be a chicken. There was an unlimiuted amount of chickens, and no matter how many chickens you already took out, on the next thing you take out, there's a 50% chance it will be a chicken. The chicken's appearance wasn't due to magic or anything else, it's just that it was a flaw desinged for a farmer and it was 'just what happens'... (IIRC).

I think it's a good idea and doesn't really go against the spirit of the game. It's not like he has a gattling gun with infinite ammo, where he'd realistically be pumping out masses of ammo per turn. With a 3 chambered revolver-rifle I can't imagine him getting huge amounts of shots off in the space of a game, and I think it's a really cool rule.

I'd say go for it.

I wouldn't worry about it - reloading is pretty uncommon anyway and a lot of guns (lasguns for instance) might as well have unlimited ammo as far as most games are concerned.  If you said he had 40 rounds in a pouch it would effectively be the same as unlimited ammo...

I wouldn't worry about it.  I can think of relatively few cases of characters even needing to reload.  None from the spring conclave, although my merc with a grenade launcher clicked to empty a couple of times at the GT.

Getting through a second reload is almost unheard of, so Droog would be at a handicap compared to most people.

Droog needs to wear a derby.
