Title: Rayner WIP
Post by: Rayner on July 07, 2010, 12:36:23 AM
Hello all,

It's been quite some time since I've done any painting or modelling, but after coming across the conclave a few weeks ago my inspiration was rekindled.
Rooting through my cupboards I found the remainders of models and my old bitz box to work with and after some hunting on ebay I had enough to start work.

The first model is my namesake, Inquisitor Salus Rayner.

Also the back... (http://i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac196/VincZid/Img_005.jpg)

I decided to keep the model simplistic and muted, due to the background I have planned for him. He's trying to lay low right now.

Looking back at the model now compared to the GW inq scale models I got in the mail, the head is far too large!
Overall I am happy with how the sculpting came out and what mistakes I made I can learn from as I go along.

Next up for Rayner's warband is Rogue Trader Eira de Carisio.

The other side... (http://i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac196/VincZid/Img_007.jpg)

Tied to Rayner simply by bad luck and the promise of a free pardon, Eira holds no loyalty to him. I tried to give her a feeling of "nobility" but still giving her the appearance that she can hold her own in a fight.

Since he's an outlaw, I felt Rayner would need to rely on some of societies lesser loved characters...

So here's scavenger Cray Revant.

A back photo (http://i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac196/VincZid/Img_009.jpg)

So far I felt that the group was missing some ranged firepower, so the forth member of the warband had to fill that gap.
I had the idea that before losing everything, Eira had supplied Rayner with various supplies and oddities. One item she came across during her travels was an old Praetorian; VS39-4.

The rear... (http://i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac196/VincZid/Img_011.jpg)

Im not sure the fleshtone I have chosen really works. I wanted to given the impression that its old and the skin has started to corrode. Might have to retry it at some point.

After the main four characters were done, I wanted to make some interchangeable characters for the warband. So here's a WIP scavenger, Martin Varis.

Not sure how a scavenger got his hands on a bolter though...

My next idea was to create a puritan Inquisitor and Ecclesiarchy warband, so far the leader is still WIP; Inquisitor Issac Ernaldus.

The back (http://i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac196/VincZid/Img_002.jpg)
Above view (http://i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac196/VincZid/Img_003.jpg)

One problem I've noticed after taking this photo is that his left leg seems a bit thin, so I'll correct that before I go any further. I also feel I might need to add a few more cables and wires to make his armor a bit more futuristic.

After I had built VS39-4, I got a sudden urge to build a bunch of techpriests. Perhaps as a warband or for use as npcs.

Techpriest with auspex (http://i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac196/VincZid/Img_015.jpg)
Techpriest with spanner (http://i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac196/VincZid/Img_017.jpg)
Techpriest with rifle (http://i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac196/VincZid/Img_018.jpg)
Techpriest with breacher (http://i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac196/VincZid/Img_020.jpg)

I had great fun making these, I felt I could let my imagination go a bit wilder than the other models I had made so far! :)

WELCOME TO THE CONCLAVE! (that is traditional here.)

Excellent work there. Simply excellent. I'm seething with jealousy.

Very nice work there!  Some great sculpting and nice combinations of parts - impressive. :)

Very impressive! and some very nice sculpting going on there.

Really like the tech priests - what are the base models you used for those?

Thank you all for the great feedback :)

Flinty - The techpriests were based on some WW2 German infantry models I picked up from ebay (here) (http://stores.ebay.co.uk/drumandflag). The plastic is ridiculously bendy and hard to cut to shape or file down mould lines.

However, GS seems to hold on fine and I got 8 in the bundle, so good value for money!

Good smooth greenstuff work -0 I'm still trying to get the hang of that myself.  Like the simplistic and muted look on Salus, the white lock of hair gives the model that extra bit of personality.  Techpriests are always fun to make, you get the range between almost human and mechanical cyborg to play with.

this is one hell of a way to announce yourself to the Conclave! Great work there, some of your use of parts is very clever, very nice sculpting work as well.

Really inspiring stuff.  The sculpting ranges from simple yet effective to fantastic (looking at the Inquisitor's face who has the tyranid bit shin-guard).  Makes me want to dig out the old bitz box...

Envy in every which way possible my friend. Particularly your skill with the faces. Also love the mech warband :)

Done a little more work on Issac Ernaldus, fixed the problem with his leg and added a few accessories.

The back (http://i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac196/VincZid/Img_030.jpg)

I'm not sure if the tyranid armor plates on his lower left leg suit the rest of the model. I might alter it, but not quite sure how just yet.

Some reworks of old models I had make up the first two members of Ernaldus's group, here is Fanatic Jacob...

The back (http://i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac196/VincZid/Img_028.jpg)

and Preacher Marc.

Firstly welcome mate

im loving your sculpting skills and i think your gonna do very well with whatever minis you produce lol
However im not totally sold on the Preachers left Arm....think its a tad tooo long, looks like his wrist was cut off, replaced with a metal brace and then his hand was stuck back on. But in life i guess it could look better

Here are the finished models of Ernaldus and the two current members of his warband.

The back (http://i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac196/VincZid/Img_035.jpg)
The left (http://i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac196/VincZid/Img_036.jpg)
The right (http://i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac196/VincZid/Img_037.jpg)

The back (http://i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac196/VincZid/Img_039.jpg)

The back (http://i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac196/VincZid/Img_041.jpg)

I'm still thinking about the next member of this group, perhaps a witch hunter?

Here's another sculpt I've been working on, a feral/western bounty hunter.

The back (http://i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac196/VincZid/Img_023.jpg)

Looking at this model, I've noticed its a bit "top heavy" and the armor is very... limited :) Im already planning to add some more chest coverage, perhaps a armored vest.

Nice - I have a weakness for feral / western style models in inquisitor.  That is a really serious looking flamer, I think among the best I've seen.  The mad look on the model blends with it, naturally  :).

Some more pictures for you today, as always comments and advice is greatly appreciated :)

First up is a quick conversion/sculpt, Scribe Abe.
I felt that Ernaldus appears to be quite a youthful Inquisitor, and perhaps needed someone to advise him.

The back (http://i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac196/VincZid/Img_049.jpg)

Next is Witch Hunter Dalton Quinlivan

The side (http://i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac196/VincZid/Img_042.jpg)
The back (http://i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac196/VincZid/Img_044.jpg)

There's still a lot of work to do on this model, (like that moulding line, which I thought I'd dealt with) but I wanted to ask for people's opinion on the hat... does if look like its too high up on his head? I'm planning to GS hair for the right side of his face, so maybe it will look less obvious then.

Also I'm working on a 40k style torch for his left hand, which still needs a lot of GS before its ready.

Looking at my bitz box, I found the parts to make this guy.

The back (http://i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac196/VincZid/Img_047.jpg)

No name for him yet, but I see him as a young adept who has been given the right gear but has no skill to use them and is a bit of a coward. His grasp on the halberd hopefully echoes this.

Whilst going through my bitz box to make the adept, I found the parts to a plastic fantasy ogre. As it was, the model was a bit too short for Inquisitor. I suddenly had a "hmm, I wonder if..." moment and proceeded to hack away at the plastic. Some clipping and greenstuff later and with a lick of paint, here is the result.

The left arm is a bit too long, but Im quite happy with how it turned out :)

Finally another member for Rayner's group, here's Ex-Imperial Guard Beatriz Hart.

The back (http://i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac196/VincZid/Img_053.jpg)

The right eye and her left side of the hairline are terrible sculpts, the photo is being very kind. I was also thinking of putting some tatoos on her arms, but I'm not sure what they should be. If anyone has any ideas or images I would greatly appreciate it.

further excellent work, your sculpting especially is impressive  :)

I like Abe, although the name made me smile because it's the same as my frankenstein's monster.  Dalton's hat is probably a bit too high once you point it out, but I don't think I'd notice if you hadn't.  Otherwise it works well with the dynamics of the model - he's got a real cavalier look about him.

Need to make allowances when sculpting I find - Beatriz looks pretty good.  Like the idea of an adept ineptly waving a (power?) halberd.
Title: Re: Rayner WIP

More excellent sculpting there (I'm very jealous.)

Abe is definitely my favourite, but I really like the extended Ogre and the flamer weilding cultist too.

I think that Dalton's hat is way too high (when I wear a hat, the brim is resting on my brow ridge, not two inches above it.) The problem is caused by the height of the wires on the left side of his head. I don't really see a way of fixing this without making them disapear into the brim of the hat.

Perhaps tilting the hat forward and to the right side of his head in an 'oh so cool' manner? would raise the brim over the wires and let you lower the hat to a more natural position on his head.

That's exactly what i've decided to do :)

I agree, the hat was sitting far too high up, now its resting on the top of his ears. Hopefully this will look slightly better, I'll post another picture once I've made more progress with the detailing.

EDIT: And here's the end result. I'm not entirely sold on this conversion, for some reason I think the best viewing angle is from the back... which doesn't really fill me with a lot of confidence.

I think the lowered hat looks great, a very nice job. I do however think the pose of the torch arms seems off, perhaps if the torch was hanging at his side, rather then held aloft, or just generally at a less upward.backward angle. i can't figure out whether his hand would look better further up the torch as well.

Having said that I think as it is he look amazing anyway, and far outstrips my own talent so I wouldn't worry too much :)

Got round to painting these guys finally.  ;D

The back (http://i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac196/VincZid/Img_058.jpg)

I decided to give them a "drone" appearance by painting them all in a unified colour scheme. I still need to paint a logo on the back cloth strip of the techpriest with the breacher, but I'm not quite sure what to do yet.

EDIT: Oh! Almost forgot, I was going through some boxes and came across a few old inq models and this guy.

The back (http://i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac196/VincZid/Img_063.jpg)
The left (http://i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac196/VincZid/Img_064.jpg)
The right (http://i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac196/VincZid/Img_065.jpg)

Looking back at it now, I realise this model needs a LOT of work and is also very badly scaled  :)

But I might give this another go, tweak a few bits and see how it turns out. Any comments or ideas for improvement would be greatly appreciated.

Hmm... I wasn't planning to use him for games, simply as a display piece. (I don't think it would make for fun or constructive gaming to bring such a monster onto the table... unless too many people bring along space marines of course ;D)
Title: Re: Rayner WIP
Post by: Heroka Vendile on August 03, 2010, 08:47:55 PM
Oh I'd say he's definitely usable in a game, sure he's very bulky and over-scaled, but as a GM controlled character rather than a player character I can see him being the perfect Big-BadTM for the end of a campaign - the overlord behind all the chaos cults the players have been hunting down.

Naturally as such a hulking model it would be more a matter him being taken out by the "rule of cool" rather than actual damage done to him (Rule of Cool, if you don't know, is where the GM ignores the dice or makes something with heavy modifiers easy because it is just so damn cool and action-movie-esque ).

From a modelling perspective I would say take that metal heavy bolter off and replace it with a gauntlet-mounted stormbolter a-la Grey Knights, made from a twin-linked heavy bolter off a 40k Landraider or somesuch. I'd also say that for the size of him the axe head needs to be doubled in size at the very least.
Title: Re: Rayner WIP
Post by: Rayner on August 03, 2010, 10:38:11 PM
I was thinking of scrapping the chainaxe and instead giving him a chainfist, plus I have some plastic 40k heavy bolters sitting in my bitz box for the stormbolter :)

Since he is such a bulky terminator, I'll try to model him as an archaic armor version... perhaps even some form of prototype from forgotten years.

Originally I was going to make him a World Eater, but now I'm not so sure. If anyone would like to recommend a good colour/design theme (I'm currently scouring my old Chaos space marine codex for detail inspiration ;D) it might end up being used!

Definitely paint him in dark colours and use him as a statue that in an end scenario is inhabited by a loosed herald daemon.....oooh yeah definitely :D

My 2 cents anyway :P

Alpha Legion is the perfect CSM Legion to be involved in Inquisitor, they're masters of subterfuge, lies and stealth - perfect for the grand master behind a large number of cults (have you read Legion by Dan Abnett from the Horus Heresy series?)

I like the idea of using a Legion that works from the shadows, makes them all the more sinister when they finally show their faces.

Been working on cleaning up the model surface, reworking the plates and adding details (both mechanical ones and chaotic insignia :)) I've adjusted the left lower leg so the foot sits flat on the ground. This gives the model a better sense of motion and stops him from looking like he's crouching down.

The side (http://i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac196/VincZid/Img_068.jpg)

I've also replaced the small wrist-mounted bolter with something a bit more suitable to the models size.

The storm bolter still needs greenstuff to smooth out the alterations I've made. Before that, is it a good size? Anything I should change? (other than adding chaos branding, etc)

Next on the list is the chainfist and shoulderpad iconography.

if you do decide on the alpha legion, then a couple additions such as scale-mail or literally covering parts of the armour in scales or adding cloaks/cloth.

I say Word Bearers - they're more "Chaos-ified" and so a Word Bearer being twisted into something that is giant even by Space Marine standards makes perfect sense. They're also suited to Inquisitor because of their extensive manipulation of cults...

Here's the almost finished Witch Hunter Quinlivan.

Still needs finishing and detail added to the coats. I've had a hard time with this model from the start, and I'm still not entirely happy with how it has turned out. One example is the left arm, after multiple tries at repositioning the angle etc I ended up back where it was before and the torch ending up looking slightly disjointed :(

Ah well, live and learn

Here is the first (almost complete) in a line of mutineer guards

The back (http://i899.photobucket.com/albums/ac196/VincZid/Img_072.jpg)

Another lesser worked on muntineer, still need to greenstuff the gasmask and other details.

To make more of these npcs, I bought some WW2 soldiers. Sadly, when i opened the boxes I found the models were slightly too small compared to Inq scale (bought 1/35 by mistake :-\)

After much cursing and hair-pulling, I broke out the clippers and greenstuff and got to work making the taller.
Here's the WIP so far...

Lots of work to do on these, but I'll be damned if the parts end up in the bitz box!
As always, comments and criticism always welcome :)

All looking very good! The torch looks like it turned out very well in that photo, and the hat looks fantastic too. The first mutineer has a great creepy henchmen look about him and I look forward to all the rest being done as well.

Who will be their leader? I look forward to seeing whoever it is being modelled as judging by the guardsmen he will be.....evil.....

very nice, youve really turned him into something unique. I really like the whole set up of his torch and the accompanying rig as well as his hair and the wrap around his head and neck, really good touches.

What's the gun on the first mutineer? and also good work on sculpting a lasgun from scratch! get some plasticard/rod makes life much easier!
Title: Re: Rayner WIP
Post by: Rayner on August 17, 2010, 04:47:20 PM
Thanks for all the comments.

Shannow - The torch was my attempt to echo the GW fantasy witch hunter model, but I wanted it to feel slightly more futuristic than just a burning rag on a stick :) I see it working as a regular mace when it's switched "off", and a CC weapon that deals a certain amount of fire damage on contact when it's switched "on".

I have a rough idea for the leader, but he won't be making an appearance until after the minions are done.

Kresten - Actually I kinda cheated on this one by making a mold of a 54mm lasgun I'm using on another mutineer. It hasn't turned out perfect, so I might end up chopping certain parts away and replacing them with plasticard.

Still finishing the chains for the broken handcuffs on this one.

I managed to get my hands on a broken guard conversion, so its now being used for the Mutineer leader.(with a few "evil bits" added on) So far I've only added the claw and piping and GS over a few of the imperial symbols.

A lot of work to do until this one is ready for repainting, but I'm happy with it so far.

Very nice - have you read Words of Blood, the short story? It appears in Let the Galaxy Burn, and I think was made into a comic in Eternal War or Eternal Damnation, one of those. You might find some inspiration for your mutineers there...

However, what is up with the first guys legs? He seems to be made of smoke... Which looks damn cool, but is like that, or am I seeing things?

How many times can I write fantastic? Well I'm lazy so you only get the one :P

But seriously, I love the twin pistol mutineer and the leader in particular, but all of them are great and I think the grey lends that air of evil and may be a good colour for their uniform or some such.

Your green stuff skills are also to be commended, the masks in particular are superb, my favourite being the crude rifle wielder. I am very very jealous of your skills my friend.

I've been trying to get hold of a copy, as I think looking into the background will help me with character design, etc.

The first mutineer (as well as some of the others) are leftovers from the techpriest npcs I created a while back, this one is actually crouching on some rubble with most of his legs and feet hidden by his coat. The flash and my shoddy photography skills make it hard to see ;D
