Well after 3 weeks without tinternet due to a cock-up at BTs end I can finaly post these as they're now a couple of weeks old ::)

I make no excusses for the poor quality of the pics.... except that its a brand new camera, that I aint used to yet, and I only read Marcos pic taking guide last night  :-[

I've not yet got any names or backgrounds for any of my caracters other than a few rough ideas I've got jotted down as I want to see how the models come out/end up before doing them.

This is my first real attempt at GSing other than gap filling and maybe the occassional beard on my 1/16th figures, so C&Cs appreciated as allways....

First up my Rogue Trader....

He is modeled from this kit I've had in its box for an absalute age and never got round to....

My Ogryn Body Guard....

My armature I'm using to construct my Tech Priest.... For anyone who cares its an old Tamiya German military police motorcyclist with the appropriate amount of packers to make him the correct height....

And just for giggles, as he may not yet get used in the band, some pics of my daemon host I painted up  as a pre-release demo model for my old games club....

Now these are the INQ28 versions of the above caracters...

No host yet, as I'm still deciding on him being part of my band, plus I'm waiting on my GS skills to improve abit before I make him in this scale.

And finaly the 2 models I've been using to try and introduce my step-son to INQ28, may I introduce Inquisitor Hugh Jarse and his trusty side kick 'Mr Dobbs', I appologies to all the 'don't do direct ports from other systems' sayers out there, but I only knocked them up quickly so we could get on and play  :-\

That rogue trader is unbelievable! I absolutely love it!
I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched c-beams glitter in the dark near the Tanhauser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain.

Time to die.

Adlan

I really like them all, but the Rouge trader is the best. Very nice pose.

DapperAnarchist

That's your first major GS work? Wow. I can't wait to see what you do next....

Great green stuff work on the rogue trade he looks very nice.  Looking forward to seeing what the tech priest comes out like based ont eh 28mm version as well.

That has got to be one of the best uses of a gnoblar trapper I have ever seen, grot crime lord.

Keep up the great work and looking forward to more.

Thanks for all the feedback guys  :D

Anyhoo, a quick updatey thingy on rescent works done to both the Ogryns, hope you like....

First the 28mm scale....

Now the big guy....

C&Cs as always much appreciated.

In other news, I was in Cut and Thrust in Bristol the other day and after a short conversation on what we were all working on 1 of the lads there asked if I'd be interested in buying a 54mm space marine, brand new and still in the box for a fiver?? It didn't take me long to think to hard about an answer, so I've now got another project warband on the side lines ready and waiting, gona go down the Chaos route with it I think and use the SM, the Host pictured above and this model once its been stripped....

..... as a magus  :-\

Damon

Great models. Love the Ogryn and rogue trader in particular. Looking forward to seeing more models

Heroka Vendile

while the sculpting looks excellent on the rogue trader, I think I'll need to see it painted before I'm 100% convinced the outfit itself works.

Another update.....

Rogue Trader and Ogryn are now finished with the modelling stage as far as I'm willing to take them. Gona try a new style undercoat method, having used black as my undercoat for the last 25 years, its an all over coat of mid grey (GW Codexish grey) which is then washed in watered down black which ends up looking like this....

I've also started my 1st ever 'major' GS work, unless you include the stuff done to my rogue trader, on my Tech priest, he now looks something like this...

And now, because I've found I've got a hidden flair for such things, my armature for my 1st full sculpt....

Not sure what its gona be yet, but I like the pose. I'll start fleshing it out soon and see where it takes me from there....

PS   Appologies for the size of the pics, I forgot to resize them on my host before posting and now they refuse to be made smaller  ::).... Fixed  :)

Hugh Jarse

Tech Priest is finished on the modelling side of things, not really happy with his hands, this is my first attempt at doing anything like this, as you can see I did 1 in GS, which I feel is much better, and 1 in Fine Grade Miliput, I think next time I'll try mixing the 2 together and see if that yields better results  :-\

As always C&Cs welcome.....

Inquisitor Goldeneye

These are all really good! You've quite a knack for sculpting cloth, and I can't wait to see what you end up putting on that armature.

Yet another update.....

My first ever full sculpt..... What do you all think? C&Cs really appreciated.....

From this.....

To this....

I've also now found a old model BMW race car, still in kit form, that I'm thinking of converting as transport for the above warband, but first I'd better do some painting  ;)

It has some promise, but it's going to be hard to critique in small, poorly lit pictures. Larger pictures would help.

- The female waist should be slim, but you've overdone it. A good technique if you're going for realistic anatomy is to measure dimensions on the model and scale them up to see if they're sensible.

- There are no real shoulders, and the trapezius muscles are very triangular and masculine. Women have lower shoulders and thus appear to have longer necks.

- You need to study the structure of faces more. There are several mistakes here. You shouldn't feel bad about that though, as few people's first attempts at a face get it bang on the nose. However, it is one of the most important things to get right, so you'll need to persevere.

To list the ones I can see: The eyes are too far up the head (they should be half way); the nose is oversized; the mouth is wide and hasn't any lips; and there aren't any cheek bones.

- I think the inside right thigh might be a bit odd, but I can't really be sure from these pictures/angles.

- Not every woman has breasts like Katie Price. This might just be exaggerated by the narrow waist, but she's probably just going to find those getting in the way all the time. They're also too far up the chest. The "main curve" of the breast starts at armpit level.

That's what I see on first assessment. Don't let it put you off though. It's all anatomical stuff, not poor technical skills.

Thanks for the honest critique, to be fair there are a few things I'm not happy with and have taken the view of 'next time it will be better'..... Considering she actually started out in my mind as a sort of Sergeant Stone, man type character.

I started in a Left leg, then right, groin, belt, torso, arms, face and boobs and finally hair, order. It was only when I finished doing the groin/backside area that I decided that her arse was way to small and tight to be a mans so she became female from that point on, which meant I had to set about the Milliput I'd made the musculature out of with my dremel to thin down arms, waist, skull etc and generally make her more female in form before adding the GS. I then invisaged her as an ex IG Veteran/Amazon style character when the upper torso started to come together as I had to try and incorporate the slighty more manly musculature already in place..... As I was told 25 years ago when doing my apprenticeship..."Its only becomes a 'problem' or 'wrong' if you cant find any other alternative way of of solving the problem"  :D

I'm not happy with the overall length of the torso length, its way to long, probably why she appears to be so thin at the waist, also I think I fitted the arm armaruture to high up the chest also making her neck to short, easily corrected on the next armature.
I'm not happy with her left hand, this was my own fault as I was restricted to what I could do to it due to the thickness of the armature wire I had used in her arm. This will be remedied on the next armature.
The face, due mostly to the points pointed out by Marco (thanks for the link, it will be read, and then read again)
Her hair, not the effect or length I was aiming for but I suppose its passable.....ish.  :-\

I've now since gone out and bought a book called 'Anatomy for Fantasy Artists' by Glenn Fabry from my local Hobbycraft, its all about actually drawing the characters, but it is quite detailed in showing both  male and female proportioning, musculature, faces, facial expressions, body poses, etc It was the only book I could find that showed anything like the stuff a miniature maker would be interested in, unless they were also heavily into art side of it too.

I Primered her and the tech priest last night so here are some larger pics done with a different light setting on my camera (its sparkly new so I'm still learning what does what), also, re the lighting, I photograph in my airbrush booth which has 2 daylight bulbs at the very top, just infront of the sprayers head, ideal for spray painting sat on a turn table and photographing smaller scale models, and brilliant at casting shadows under anything your taking a picture of thats any larger than a 28mm mini.... I'll work on a third light source lower down for next time as I've just bought a desk lamp to turn into an oven, it could very well turn out to have 2 uses  ;).

First a couple of quick ones I took to show my mate how she was coming along....

Now the ones I took this morning.....

Again C&Cs welcome....  :)

I have it myself. It does a lot talking about exaggeration of proportions to portray different aspects of the character, which is useful stuff. It doesn't however touch on many elements of anatomy. There's not a huge amount of muscle reference, and I'm not even sure it goes into elements like seven and a half head proportions.

It's really more of a "how to modify anatomy and why" book. As such, I normally supplement it with Barrington Barber's Anatomy for Artists, which has far more reference, including some very useful stuff about how muscle structures shift and change with position.
It's more focused on life drawing than designing things from your imagination, and it is a bit more expensive - but it is a much bigger and more versatile book. If I could only have one, it's the one I'd use, but the two do make a good tag team.

Of course, if you simply go onto deviantART and search for "Anatomy Tutorial", you'll be swamped with free advice - more than enough unless you're looking to take it really seriously.

Meh - I've still got the remnants of a Sgt Stone I converted into a butch middle aged woman somewhere.
