A Lasgun is better than a modern assault rifle.

Yeah, but I was talking solely in a sense of lethality.

Take its other advantages into account, and it's clear that lasguns are seriously underrated.
As things like the "Imperial Infantryman's Uplifting Primer" and the "Departmento Munitorum Manual" put it, lasweapons are the most prolific Imperial firearms - and while the Imperium might be callous at times, they wouldn't be able to survive if the weapons they issued to their front-line troops weren't up to the job.
