As I'm a) rewriting all my characters from scratch, having lost everything except "The Gilded One", and b) not needing to do much work yet, as my presentations aren't till next week, I'll probably be post a lot of stuff here.... so here comes another one

Jonas Cadogan, Sepulcherian

The Sepulcherians came into being after the breaking of the Siege of Atarun. This hundred-year siege had created thousands of heroes, the most notable being Captain Ekrah. However, in the fighting, Ekrah's body had been lost. The Guild of the Holy Journey, a lay order of Traders, set out on a mission to collect his corpse and return to Holy Terra where it could be laid to rest. After a hunt taking most of a decade, Ekrah's body was recovered from a concealed fortress on an ice moon. Returning to Holy Terra, the Guild agreed to change their purpose and, with the Ecclesiarch's support, ended their Charters as Traders and became a Lay Order dedicated to recovering the lost corpses of the heroes of the Imperium. Their new name was to be the Order of Terra's Sepulchre, or the Sepulcherians.

Jonas Cadogan worked his way up through the ranks of the Imperial Navy to become Chief Armsman aboard the Steel Death. When she was destroyed by pirate attack, Cadogan was one of the few to survive. Having survived by the narrowest margin, Cadogan decided to dedicate his life to the service of the Emperor. He soon found the Sepulcherians, and found that their mission and his experience were almost perfectly suited to each other. Again working his way through the ranks, he was appointed second-in-command of the Polyandrius, assigned to the search for the corpse of the Rogue Trader Orpheus Callidon. When the Captain of the Polyandrius was killed by a feral tribesman, Cadogan took command. Under his orders, the Polyandrius entered a vast dust cloud known as the Maze of Whispers. There, after a dangerous search, he found the long-lost Trader vessel The Celestial Archer, and its Captain. As well as this, the Celestial Archer contained the body of Jarl Fangarm, a Space Wolf Sergeant who had been considered missing in action. When the Polyandrius and the Celestial Archer arrived at Terra, a Space Wolf Herald was waiting for them. As a mark of their respect and gratitude for having returned their lost brother's body to them, the Space Wolves gave the Cuan, a power sword of Fenrisian manufacture, to Cadogan. Having proven himself, Cadogan was given permanent command of the Polyandrius, and sent out on further missions.

During the early days of the Great Crusade, Prince Cankara renounced his succession, and swore loyalty to the Imperium at the Emperor's feet. Gathering around him his strongest men, he set off with the Crusade on his personal vessel the Jove's Light. However, during the Heresy the Jove's Light was lost in combat, attempting to hold up a Traitor convoy from reaching Terra. Both the ship and Prince Cankara were lost. The Polyandrius set out to find them. Despite the 10,000 year gap, after four years of searching Cadogan found a lead in an ancient command centre kept as a shrine to the glory of the Crusade. However, the lead turned out to identify any of nearly 200 sites in the Galaxy. However, Cadogan and the crew of the Polyandrius will keep searching.

I'm considering writing up more on the Maze of Whispers and putting it into the Calixian Conclave, if that sounds good?

The Calixian Conclave thread is there for people to use to link together the stories they tell in their games - so if the Maze of Whispers features in your games then definitely add it, but it's not really the place to add pure background information.

Otherwise I like the idea of the character, but it seems like the traders are giving up a lot to serve the Ecclesiarchy but I guess the Ecclesiarchy are plenty rich enough to employ people to wander the galaxy looking for the bodies of great heroes...

There's a reason they're called the Guild of the Holy Journey - they were already closely allied to the Ecclesiarch, and membership was based upon being faithful. I was thinking of the sort of Masonic/Templarist orders that cropped up in Western Europe 1200-1400, and the later 1800s lay orders. They're not really a Mercantile Guild, but an Ministorium Lay Order, that uses Guild because thats what its members are familiar with. Then they become a full on Lay Order with no trading conditions.

It was the Carthaxian Conclave last time I checked... ;)

Silly observations aside, I like the concept - rather original, fits in quite nicely with the universe, and makes a good justification for involvement on the Inquisitor table.
S.Sgt Silva Birgen: "Good evening, we're here from the Adeptus Defenestratus."
Captain L. Rollin: "Nonsense. Never heard of it."
Birgen: "Pick a window. I'll demonstrate".

To be honest, I hadn't really considered that - but off the top of my head -

The Guild of the Holy Journey were a lay order open only to those who possessed Trading Charters and had proven themselves to be of good faith and character. As a lay order, they were exempt from many of the charges that could be levied on those passing through Ecclesiarchy space, and so were the primary importers of foodstuffs and precious materials to the Cardinal Worlds of St. Panol's Rest, Odysser VI, and Stighia. As well as this, the Guild ran a profitable trade along the Emperor's Breath warp current, funnelling raw goods from the Eastern Rim towards the central  worlds of the Segmentum Solar. Following the Siege of Atarun in M.38, certain members of the Guild (their precise identities having been lost to history) launched a quest to recover the corpse of Captain Ekrah, believing it to be a mission given to them by the Emperor Himself. Following their success, the entire Guild was convulsed with religious sentiment, and turned itself into a Questing Lay Order, now called the Order of Terra's Sepulchre.

Ooops, did I miss that? Bah... I blame Habermas.

Sounds good - it's a nicely thought out concept.

I blame it on trying to post and make pancakes at the same time!

Indeed. The Calixian Conclave is the collective term for those Inquisitors who operate primarily or exclusively within the Calixis Sector, featured in Dark Heresy.

I like the background for these guys.  It's always good to have warbands with a strong personal motivation, not to mention an excuse to be falling afoul of inquisitors.

The carthaxian conclave is primarily for games, but most of us have character introductions in there, so a short reference is fine.  As Kaled says though, extended pieces of pure background are better placed in another thread.
I had better point out, that some of the clubs I represent are of a military bent.

You know what you are?  A plywood shark!
