It is not a matter of focus, more a matter of the picture being randomly covered in inexplicable (ie: non-existent in reality) white spots.

We had a similar fault on the first digital camera we got. It was alright for a few years and then it started getting little black dots all over the pictures and eventually the display went and you couldn't take photos at all.

It may not be, but in some cases, unexplained white dots on an image can be the flash reflecting off dust particles in the air.

But if it does it all the time (in all the modes), the camera may well be naffed. If it's new enough, try seeing if it's got any kind of warranty.
