28mm Inquisitor Warband(s)

I had said something in another thread about building 28mm versions of my Inquisitor webcomic characters in my free time, and I'm going to be using this thread to track the progress.
Fair warning, "free time" has a very wide range of meaning with me, so I can't promise any sort of consistent updates.  But hey, who cares?  It's all in fun.
It should be noted that I do not play Inquisitor, or 40k, and don't have any interest in rules.  I'm putting together these warbands from the perspective of a storyteller and artist, and I'm more concerned with fluff and aesthetics than whether or not any of it is rule-friendly.  Please don't jump at me too bad if I post something that defies the rules!

First up we have Moretti, a puritan of Ordo Hereticus

I know he looks a little silly with two guns and two swords, but the weapons hanging at his belt are for dueling, and outside of that, serve an almost exclusively ceremonial purpose.

These little turds are going to be familiars for the Chaos cultists who will serve as the prime antagonists of the comic.  Really I'm looking for a reason to paint the two metal once, since I saw them sitting in a box of long-forgotten pieces and just had to do something with them.

Squat  ;D

I don't care how hard Games Workshop is fighting to erase them.  They got themselves into this mess and I'm not about to let them get out of it.  I think at the very most, a single squat will make a cameo in my comic, but this guy has always been one of my favorite dwarf models ever produced.  He is a crewman from the oooooold Dwarf Flame Cannon, and I'm going to try and find the other two that came with the set.  No big loss if I can't dig them up though, this guy is my favorite of the trio.
Not entirely sure what his role will be.  I have no idea what's in the barrel.  Beer?  Nitroglycerin?  Mind-blowing narcotics?  I'll think of something.

Not sure what I'm going to do with this dude either.  He was another product of a raid of my giant box of discarded bits.  I'm pretty happy with how the axe turned out, I just need to clean up a bit of glue residue.
At the moment it doesn't register as a 40k model to me, so I'm going to have to do some work to future him up a bit.  I don't want to do something stupid and clumsy like sticking a pistol holster on his hip and calling it a day.  I need to do something with his left hand too.  Not sure if I should put a gun in it, a book, have him holding a skull (human or other), sacrificial dagger, or what.  I also can't decide if having him stepping on a beastman like that will be something I can pass off as 40k.  Input on this would be appreciated, I'm a bit stuck.
He may have a passing role in the comic as a radical Inquisitor.
Truth time.  More than anything, this guy is a self-portrait in 28mm.

These are going to be members of the Tech Magos Izri's Amalasand retinue.  Izri himself isn't represented here.  He is going to be a more extensive conversion.  I just bought up every model Forge World had that looked like it was from the Mechanicum.

These are very early stages, and certainly not a lot of work is done yet, but I should have painted pics up pretty soon.  I'm looking forward to hearing some feedback.

I swear I replied to this... ah well I guess the net daemons got to it first...

first off Ill say, yay for squats!

secondly Ill say that I think the gun looks way big to be held in one hand... its a really good piece though, so an easy thing to do would be saw into his elbow from the bottom up, leaving about a millimeter, then bend it back so it looks like he's resting it on his shoulders and gs an elbow. Would make a more realistic pose I think. Just my two cents.

The gs work on the guys axe and the first guys chest is really well done, I like them a lot and forge world, well, let's just say I say a little daily prayer that one day they'll make some 54mm models. I reckon you should cut the beastman off entirely and as for 40kifying him, he's great as a feral worlder as is pretty much. But some metal kneepads and shoulder pads would help. He could always have a simple gun too, like maybe a stub revolver or something that might be given to him by an Inquisitor.

As for the squat, I think given him some slick devlan style flak armor, getting rid of the top knot and giving him a cap would go a long way... and its blatantly 99% proof booze that's very flammable and toxic to anyone but him ;)

keep it up Dex, looking forward to the painting

For what it's worth, I vote for keeping the topknot. The flak armour's a good idea, though.

I am 100% in agreement with you over Moretti's pose.  Not only is that gun too big for him to be holding out in one hand, but the sword is as well.  The problem is, weight issues aside, I really like the way the pose makes him look, and think it does a lot to define his character.  I think I'm going to leave him as-is, and just lie to myself and say that he's in the middle of swinging those weapons in a circle, not holding them aloft.
I like the flak armor idea.  Any suggestions on how to sculpt it?  My problem is that he's just so damn small that I'm having trouble figuring out where I'd put it.  Being a Dwarf model, he doesn't have much in the way of limbs, and the sculpt of his arms is so beautiful I'd feel terrible covering it up.  However, when I find his buddy, I'll definitely give him long-sleeved flak armor.  Maybe some goggles?
I'll definitely take your advice and remove the beastman from "Little Dexter's" base.  Among the bits I've considered sticking in his left hand, I found a Tallarn laspistol from ForgeWorld that I'm pretty fond of.  It has an elongated, somewhat-primitive look to it that I think would work well for him.  Either that or I'll see if I can steal a gretchen model from a friend and use their awesome revolvers.
I'm hoping to have updated pictures up later this week.  I have painted up all of the Mechanicum dudes, and should be finished with Moretti soon.

Flak armor is pretty easy.  Roll out a thin layer of gs, and place it over the guys chest.  Trim off the excess.  Then use a scalpel/exacto knife/toothpick/tool to draw the pattern into the GS layer.  Cure.  Then use small amounts to pipe the edging for collars, shoulder cuffs, etc.
^Cheapskate^

Dexter

Gotcha, sounds easy enough.  I'll put it on the shoulders of the next Squat I make.  Putting it on their chests isn't really an option, since their beards pretty much cover all of their torsos except their guts.

I'm posting some updated painted pics, and a few new models.  Using imageshack thumbnails this time so as not to make the thread unreadable with images.

Here are the Mechanicum models:

Not quite finished with these guys, but almost.  I still have to put a little more work into their robes, as right now they're a bit too maroon for me.  I'm going to finish the uniforms the last servitor is carrying, although for the life of me I am having trouble justifying why a Mechanicum servitor is carrying around Imperial Guard uniforms.  Any suggestions?

Here's Inquisitor Moretti, almost finished.  He's missing his eyes, the writing on his gun's purity seal, the studs on his arm bands, and again I need to make the red on him a bit less purple.  Other than that I'm pretty happy with him.  I'll probably go back and do a few sharp final highlights on his coat, to make it look more like treated leather.
Interesting side note, and I guess we can blame the sculptor for this, but his left hand is the size of his head.  Oh heroic scale, how you do make me chuckle sometimes.

I do apologize for not taking the advice posted for this guy.  By the time it was posted, he was already painted  :-[
I promise when I paint up his buddy, he'll have goggles and flak armor and probably a cigar.

A cherub I had ordered back in the day when Games Workshop did individual bitz orders.  Those were the days.  He will accompany the small Sisters contingent I am planning in the future.
The Chimera is for Grundvigg's retinue.  I wanted to give it a very militaristic feel, so I gave it a Predator turret and fudged a multilaser out of the autocannon.  I'm not sure how I'll paint it, but I've been wanting to do murals on a vehicle for a while so that may well feature on this guy.  In the future I plan on doing a Valkyrie and a Baneblade, so eagle and skull murals may be a theme I pick up on.

Oh crap!  Is this the enemy that's going to wipe all my Inquisitors from the face of the universe?
Nah, it's a showpiece, but I really like this model so I just thought I'd share  ;D  By the way, what do you guys think about bone-colored armor plates for him?

I really love the third from left mechanicus model, really fantastic. Though all of them are very good anyway with oodles of character, now you just have to play a game and take pretty pictures of it :D

With the last guy, I actually quite like the colour the armours at now :P but thats likely to just be me! I think bone would suit him very well indeed.

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched c-beams glitter in the dark near the Tanhauser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain.

Time to die.

Dexter

Well the Daemon Prince right now is just a black undercoat and a layer of dark red on his skin.  I'm considering giving him dark, dirty brass trim on his armor, and making the plates a streaky bone color.

More to-topic, I'm also working on removing the beastman from "Little Dexter's" base, and am sculpting flak armor onto his knees and shins.

Found two more Squats!  Thought I had left them at my mom's house when I moved out ten years ago, and tore her basement apart looking for them.  Turns out I had them in my bitz box all along.

So I've already painted up the guy with the powder keg, and want to do a fair bit of converting on the other two to make them look like proper Squats and not fantasy Dwarfs, which will make the first guy look like he fits into 40k by association.
Since the Dwarf with the ramrod has tools on his belt, I'd like to convert him into a mechanic.  I'll give him some goggles, an assortment of gears and spare parts lying at his feet, some more tools hanging from his belt, and possibly a large wrench or spanner.
The dude with the hammer I would like to convert into a welder.  I'll attach a welding mask to his helmet, have it facing up, with a cigar in his mouth.  I'll snip off that hammer and put a welding torch in there, probably angled so that he's lighting his cigar with it.  Because that cliche hasn't been done enough.

Unfortunately not a whole lot of time for hobbying outside of finding those two Dwarfs and smacking myself for being an idiot.  Busy with comic commissions at the moment, but hope to get back to painting soon.
